Michael Stone, S - This former Arizona Cardinal played well in the role he was asked to fill. First as an extra defender then as a starter, Stone did well enough to help the Patriots postseason run. Normally a solid tackler, Stone was caught out of position a number of times during games. He has potential, and could provide the much-needed depth the team needs. Not rated highly as a free agent, Stone could be acquired if the team had interest in doing so.

Experienced depth, special teams.

I saw the guy play last year and he is not an upgrade over anyone on the team. He only played because the Pats had like 4 safties on IR last year.

just someone to play the role of Marcus Coleman in the preseason.

But if three rings make Tom Brady better than Peyton Manning, then he is better than Ed Reed.

I have bad memories about former Patriot safties.

Michael Stone is now a Texan.

Chronic article (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/3782968.html)

The Texans have agreed to contract terms with veteran safety Michael Stone, who played at New England last season.

Stone gives the Texans a veteran safety to replace Marcus Coleman. He'll compete with C.C. Brown and Glenn Earl for playing time.

From ESPN

Bolstering their interior secondary with a veteran player, the Houston Texans (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=hou) have reached a contract agreement with unrestricted free agent safety Michael Stone (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5501), a five-year veteran who played for the New England Patriots (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nwe) in 2005.

Profile (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5501) 2005 SEASON STATISTICS Tot Ast Solo FF Sack Int 32 27 5 0 0 0 Contract details were not immediately available.

Stone, 28, is coming off the most productive season of his career. He appeared in 13 games with the Patriots with a career-best 46 tackles. He started three games at strong safety after signing with New England in late September when injuries thinned the Patriots' depth chart.

Always a solid special teams player, Stone posted 17 tackles on kick coverage teams in 2005.

Houston has two young starters in the secondary -- second-year veteran C.C. Brown (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7364) at free safety and third-year pro Glenn Earl (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6881) at strong safety. Stone could serve as the primary backup to both; he has played both the safety spots in the past and even lined up at cornerback earlier in his career. He figures to provide depth and experience and could challenge for playing time in nickel situations.

A second-round choice of the Arizona Cardinals (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=ari) in the 2001 draft, Stone was regarded as the big, physical kind of hybrid defensive back most teams were seeking at the time. His combination of safety size and cornerback-level cover skills made the former University of Memphis star especially attractive. But a spate of injuries, including a knee injury that sideline Stone the entire 2003 season, slowed his progress.

Stone signed with St. Louis last spring as a free agent, but was released just before the start of the season. In his career, he has appeared in 50 games, has 83 tackles from scrimmage and more than 50 special teams tackles.

At least he has interesting hair.

There is a theory out there that good teams need a crazy hair guy.

I think they must be considering C.C. Brown as a FS, and this guy could be the back-up for both (as said in the above mentioned ESPN article).:twocents:

"Always a solid special teams player, Stone ..."

This guy and Walters are both expected to come in and anchor special teams. They are planning on scoring a few points on special teams this year. And who can blame them. They have what will probably be the two most explosive return men in the game. It's obvious to me what they are doing.

Signed as street FA. Only started after starters and backups went down. Not exactly Ed Reed, but we can use the help.

I think wonderful news is a little over the top.

He only played last year because of the awful injury plague that hit NE. Coming out of New England he will hopefully bring some of their good attitude and ethic.

He will be competition, but I still think we will draft a FS or will stick with Brown.
