View Full Version : Jets looking to Move up

While driving home from work yesterday morning on Sirius NFL radio the analysts alluded to that from within the Jet's organization there was strong urgency to move up in the draft with the pick that they acquired from Denver in the Abraham trade. While this leads alot of speculation as to if they want to move up from the #4 pick in a package with the later first rounder from Denver or if it just means that they want to move higher than late first round on the second pick and leave the #4 pick alone. Now I am totally for the Texans drafting Reggie with the #1 but if there were a very lucrative trade offer I would not be too opposed. So I guess my proposed question is what would it take to move up to #1 for the Jets and who would you take with the compensated draft picks?

Coach C.

This is a pretty easy question and answer here. They send us their two first round picks and next year's second and they acquire the first pick in the draft. Now one speculation on this is it could be made on draft day if Mario Williams falls to them at 4 if not then we keep Bush as our pick. Mario and Reggie are the only players worthy of our pick in the top 4.

So if the trade is made my picks for the first round would be:
4 Mario Williams
29 Nick Mangold

Makes sense Coach...My choice would be that the Jets offer us their #4, 29 and 36 in the draft to move up to the #1. With these picks I would choose as follows:

4: Mario Williams
29:Nick Mangold
33 (already our pick):Best WR available
36: Best Safety, DB or MLB available

I have no problem trading down for their 2 #1's, and their #2 this year, or next year.

#4 Vince Young
#29 Nick Mangold
#33 Jonathan Scott
#35 Darnell Bing

What a haul.

Would you make the trade if they didn't give us a 2nd but instead gave us a 3rd?

The second next year that Coach was speaking of is considered a third rounder in value. I cannot see the Jets trading their first 3 picks to move up 3spots. I can see them making a trade similar to Coach C's take, but them giving up their second or third this year is just not benificial to them. I mean we have to convince them that Bush is worth Mario, Mangold or BPANEED and next years second rounder that should be high also. That is a tall order in its self, but one that I can see happening. I am going to go with Coach C's prediction on this one but Mangold is not my pick.

Mario Williams
Jonathan Joseph or Bobby Carpenter (Mangold will either be gone or available at 33)
Nick Mangold
Chris Chester
Daneal Manning

a 3rd this year is the same as a 2nd next year. Yes, I would most likely make that trade.

Ther would be no way that the jets give us more than the 2 1st rd'rs. The #4 is not that "2nd fiddle" to the #1 in this years draft. Last year maybe, but not this year.

The real question is....Who in the hell do the Saints and Jets want in this draft?

I would rather have one first rounder this year (#4) and thier second rounder this year, plus their first round pick next year. That would give us two solid (probably mid) first rounders next year. We could keep both or trade and move to try to get a better pick for someone like Peterson.

This Year
#4 Mario DE
#33 Simpsom FS or Mangold C/OG (who ever is still there)
#36 Joseph CB

Jets | Trading up for Leinart?
Thu, 23 Mar 2006 11:00:59 -0800

Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports the New York Jets have been rumored to trade up with the New Orleans Saints for the No. 2 overall pick in the first round and selecting Southern Cal QB Matt Leinart. "I know there's a lot of speculation out there," said Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum, who admitted he has heard those rumors. "I can't sit here and comment on any specific situation. We'll see what opportunities are presented to us. I won't rule anything in or anything out.

From what I hear the Titans want Leinart also. So what is to stop them from trading first round picks with us if the Jets/Saints trade goes down?

Musical chairs, lol.

Hey, maybe we could do that and then trade with the Jets to go back up to #2 and take Bush.

The Jets/Saints trade probably wouldn't go down before the draft. More likely they would have a contingent trade that is activated if nobody took Leinart 1st overall.

Hmmm...who out there wants Leinhart bad enough to move up to #1?

Another thought, if the Titans wanted to ensure that they landed Young they could swap picks with the Texans. Titans at #1 take Young, Jets (assuming they deal with the Saints) at #2 take Leinhart and the Texans at #3 take Bush. That would trim Bush's price a little and allow them to pick up something extra from the Titans.

Sorry, I still believe that Reggie will go number 1, regardless of who has that pick. This draft is deep enough that I will be rather shocked if we get a so called "Godfather Offer."

Works for me. If the Texans were more of a threat to take Young might they be able to get a lucrative offer for the pick. Of course, that would've meant at a minimum not going after a competent backup QB and perhaps not re-upping Carr for 3 seasons.

I think that he is a close to the real deal as you get.His knees worry me so I would not want the Texans to take him anyway.

I agree with PokerStar that I don't see the Jets sending away their top three picks in this draft to move up three spots, I think they would be willing to give up #4 and #29 and a future pick (2nd or 3rd rounder) if they are interested in trading up. I do like your idea of taking Mario and Mangold, however in this scenario I don't really like taking a WR at #33, I think the top 2-3 WRs will be gone (Chad Jackson, Santonio Holmes, and maybe Sinorice Moss) and after those three there is a decent drop off to the next group of WRs, and from there we can probably get someone just about as talented at #65 as we can at #33. If a CB like Johnathan Joseph or Antonio Cromartie is available at #33 (which is looking doubtful at this point) then I think we definitely need to look at them there.

I have no problem trading down for their 2 #1's, and their #2 this year, or next year.

What a haul.

Don't like Vince at #4, but I won't bring up that argument on here, and I don't like Jonathan Scott at #33. I'm not sure how well Scott fits our zone blocking in the first place, and I definitely don't think he's good enough to warrant the #33 pick. If we don't get an OLineman and he's available at #65 then I'd definitely look at him there, but not at #33.

The Titans aren't about to trade up to #1 for Vince, I'm not sure they'd even take him at #3 unless Leinart and Cutler go #1/2. If someone is going to trade up to #1, it's going to be for either Reggie Bush or Matt Leinart, no team likes Vince enough to trade up to #1 for him.

If we are going to draft someone at #1 with the intention of trading him, it's got to be Reggie Bush since he's our top option of a guy to pick at #1 anyways, then if you can't trade him you're "stuck" with Reggie Bush rather than being stuck with a $50 million backup QB.

Trade down to the Jets for either their 1st or 2nd round pick and possibly a late rounder, but do it for the 1st or 2nd regardless of the late rounder.

There would be a ton of options at that 4 spot, like D'brick or Mario or A.J., any of which would seriously upgrade this team. But they should only use this pick if they can't field another trade, depending on who is still available. If Mario was still available here he would be a hot commodity (Remember NO has picked a DE the last 2 years with their 1st picks) and could get alot of offers for a trade. Most big trades or done on draft day in the Heat of the moment.

You can't tell me we couldn't swing a trade with one of the teams with the next 6 or 7 picks. Even if it was swapping picks and a 1st rounder next year or this year. Possibly even trade it for Denvers 15 and 22 picks. If we stayed in the top 8 we could get someone like Huff or if Vernon slipped I would take him in a heart beat, regardless of Putzier. If Huff wasn't their and neither was Vernon and Vince Young was, that should be the pick. That would be a great quality pick at that point. Who knows if Vince doesn't beat David Carr out, then maybe he would be willing to be a wide receiver. If Vince played WR even if it was just 5 or 6 plays a game, that could be great.

If anything like that happened, which is a very likely chance it could, then we could end up with someone like Mario Williams and and the 29th or 35th pick, to go along with our 2nd rounder.

Or Huff, Vince Young or Vernon Davis and one 1st rounder this year and one next year.

Or if we traded with Denver after NY, we could get Bunkley, Winston, white, Sims or Jackson or alot of other great players and have 2 more 1st round picks to play with. A team that is converting their defense needs those picks, especially if we want to shore up the OL also.

This could happen if we traded with NY, since they have the other 1st rounder and an early 2nd. But if we were willing to take a 2nd and 3rd then NY would probably definitely do it.

What do ya'll think?

They're not moving that far down in the draft. It's either Bush or Mario so if they trade down they will stay high enough to ensure they get one of those two, and would likely wait to trade until during the draft to make sure they come away with one of them.

I would give it strong consideration if the Jets offered their #4, 29 and their 1st next year. The 1st next year would be the key to the deal since Jets are rebuilding and could have a top 5 next year.

Personally, I like what you posted on another thread with a 3 team trade among Texans,Saints, and Jets. I kinda tweaked your scenario with Jets giving up #29 and #65 to Texans and Their 3rd from Broncos to Saints. Saints get our #33 and we get #98 and Saints 2007 2nd.

So,basically Jets give up just two 3rds to move to #1.
Texans drop to #2....gain #29 , extra 3rd and 4th and 2007 2nd.
Saints drop to #4....gain #33....regain a 3rd

However,in this post .....Texans
#4 .... Bush or Mario
#29....Lawson? Whitner? .D'Quell Jackson?

Scott will go in 3rd

I guess I am more of a hardliner. I would only be happy with the deal if we got the Jets #4, 29 and next years 1st. I would even take #4, 2nd RD and next years 1st. Next years 1st is the key for me. Jets rebuilding with a tough schedule could have a top 5 pick next year.

Not likely, that would take two picks at least in the top 5 which would be extremely difficult to get. If we were going to get two players in the top 3-5 like that, my choice combination would be Bush and Mario to add the best offensive and defensive playmaker in the draft to your team, but again that won't happen.
