August 17, 2004

The Atlanta Falcons today announced that they have released cornerback Derek Ross and signed free agent CB Pat Ricketts. Terms of Ricketts' signing were not disclosed.

Ricketts, 5-11, 180 pounds, was originally signed by the Falcons as a rookie free agent in April out of Nebraska. He was waived by the Falcons on August 3.

Ross, 5-10, 197 pounds, was signed by the Falcons on December 3, 2003 after being waived by the Dallas Cowboys. He was originally a third-round draft pick by the Cowboys out of Ohio State in 2002. He played in two games for the Falcons in 2003, starting as a nickel cornerback at Indianapolis, then playing in a reserve role at Tampa Bay. He finished the season with two tackles and no passes defensed.

I don't get all hyped up about waiver players normally, but I really wanted Grady Jackson last year. Still wish we had him on our roster. Talk about depth, imagine Smith, Payne, Walker backed up by DeLoach, Jackson, Sears--that is a serious rotation/line that can withstand an injury. Oh well.

It's amazing how players like Ross stand to make 6 figure contracts and all they have to do is rely on their athletic ability and act like an adult. Yet time and time again we see these dumba55es screw up and ruin it.

Antwaan Peek could end up like that if he doesn't act smarter in a hurry. The guy is has the potential to be a star but his immaturity holds him back.

A day after claiming Ross on waivers the New Orleans Saints released him after he missed his scheduled flight to New Orleans.
