Big strong and fast. I would say that he is the 3rd best player in the draft.

After all the posts (made with hindsight!*) I've read in the past couple of months that say it was intuitively obvious that Peppers should have been picked before Carr, I wonder why Mario Williams isn't the front runner for more people around here.

I have finally made up my mind that he should be our first pick whether we trade down or not. He fills a glaring weakness for us, in general rookies on defense can make a more immediate impact, a pass rush should also improve our weak secondary, etc. etc.

* apologies to those people who truly wanted Peppers before the draft.

mario williams is probably the top talent in this draft...when you look at the athletes we have in this years draft with williams, bush, young, davis, hawk, and ferguson there is some seriously talented guys in the draft

Even though I started this process as a Bush guy and can admit that VY is an incredible talent, I have changed the past month. I wrote this a few weeks back but if you want to get a playmaker that will help the team and stop the VY v. Bush argument, this is the guy. The Steelers showed what D playmakers can do against the best of defenses.

If he is a Peppers clone the #2 overall seems pretty much inline. as a fan & not a GM I would rank them as follows:

Matt Leinart
Mario Williams
D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Reggie Bush
Vince Young
AJ Hawk
Jay Cutler
Vernon Davis
Michael Huff
Tye Hill

D'Brick dominated Mario during the Senior Bowl week (don't remember if it was the game or the practice) and we spent a 1st round pick on a DL last season.

Mario is a junior and wasn't at the Senior Bowl, nice try though. D'Brick did play well against most of the other guys there, but he did get beat some too, and Mario is easily a better pass rusher than anyone at the Senior Bowl.

As MorKnolle pointed out, Mario wasn't even at the Senior Bowl...I think you're thinking of Kiwanuka or Hali.

We did take a Dlineman last year, but there is a BIG difference between the DT that we really didn't need last year (IMO) and the DE that we desperately need now since we are switching to a 4-3 scheme.

My draft board in 2002 for the Texans in the first round was Peppers and Portis. This year it is Mario Williams and Eric Winston. Winston is admittedly a wish. I just can't get Ferguson out of my mind being beat by Tapp from VA Tech so easily.

I could live with that :thumbup

but I just think the temptation to finally nab a franchise LT that fits the Texans new scheme perfectly will be to much for Kubiac and Casserly to ignore along with owner Bob McNair's two year old promise to get David some protection. just a feeling :stooges:

The only thing McNair owes DC is cash pursuant to his contract. McNair owes this team players on both sides of the ball. DC has been pampered this off season with an extension and a new staff.

It was Mathias Kiwanuka (BC) that was dominated by D'Brick.

I think with the way they drafted in Denver and from what the O-coordinator said that one day that we may be headed D or Bush with O-line in the second. Random but with their success in lower rounds and Kubiak knowing what kind of guys he wants on the line I just don't see them pulling the trigger. Especially with the chance to get one of 5 or so playmakers....something we really aren't full of, line or not.

I the Texans picked Mario Williams first overrall, I would not shed a tear. This guy is an absolute beast. From what I heard on ESPN, the Jets are all hard-up for Lienart, so I say the Texans trade picks with NJ, the Jets get their guy and we get addtional 2nd pick this year. If someone has already come up with this scenario, sorry.

What happened with Pennington and the Jets? If he didn't restructure, the Jets wanting to trade up is far more likley.

From what Chris Mortenson said, the Jets are crazy about Lienart. Pennington wants to keep the contract he has, but they are looking to free up some cap space...at least that what I think Mort said. Plus, NO will take Leinart because it's a much safer pick than Cutler and VY. So here's how is see them coming off the board (this is with the trade):

Jets (trade from Texans): Leinart
Saints: Bush (barring any trade)
Tenn: VY
Texans: M. Williams
Packers: D'Brick

I don't doubt that williams will be a heck of a pro but if we do trade down with the jets, that will give us a chance to draft d'brick and possibly MANNY LAWSON. I dont know about you guys but lawson reminds me alot of jevon kearse. Lawson put excellent numbers at the combine, even m. williams said he was impressed. This guy could have a better career than williams. With this scenerio we finally get our FRANCHISE left-tackle and we will get a heck of an athlete at defensive end. the only thing i question manny lawson about is can he play the same way he did without mario williams? i don't doubt what mario can do in the nfl but just like when julius peppers came in can the other people on the d line play as well. ryan sims is a good player but he hasn't played up the level of the seventh pick. manny is a little undersized and if we still played the 3-4 then he would fit in perfectly. if we want him to play a lb then i don't think you can use a pick that high on a tweener (of course we did that with babin).

I really doubt the Saints would take Bush, from what I've heard it sounds like Sean Payton is also pretty interested in Cutler, so if the Jets or someone else trade up to grab Leinart I think the Saints will take Cutler or maybe Vince, but they really will be looking for a QB at #1. The Titans could then have a choice of Bush, Vince, or D'Brick and I could see them taking any of those three guys, either bring in Vince to groom behind McNair, reunite Bush with Norm Chow and upgrade at RB, or take D'Brick and upgrade their OLine. That would still leave us with Bush or Mario. To me this would be the optimal draft position for us and I would look to take the best possible trade from the Jets and move to #4 where we're guaranteed to be able to get either Bush or Mario.

While Lawson has similar athleticisim, Jevon Kearse is 6-4, 265, Manny Lawson is 6-5, 240. I think Lawson will end up being a 3-4 OLB, I could definitely see the Patriots or Steelers taking him in the 1st round to fill that role and I doubt he makes it to the 2nd round. I am also not at all sold on D'Brickashaw being that phenomenal of a OT. If we want a top OT, I would hope the Jets send John Abraham to the Broncos for the #22, then we can get the #4 and #22 in addition to more picks from the Jets for the #1 and we can get Mario Williams and Eric Winston.

I agree that Peppers should have been chosen in '02 and I like Mario Williams. However, this draft is SOOOO much different than the '02 draft. This thing is FULL of top heavy talent. That was really not the case back then. It was a weak draft.
This year, I don't even have to name all the possibles. I personally wanna draft Vince ...I think he could the future of this team. A compromise ...for the sake of you Pick Traders ...is to trade down ...and select Vernon Davis TE. I'd take him as high as 4th ...that guy would have a bigger impact on our current roster than ANYBODY else in the draft!

You toot your own horn son! NOBODY and I mean NOBODY was picking Portis in the 1st round. That guy shocked the world ...he was a 3rd stringer all the way through college ...he got an opportunity to play in a BOWL GAME ...and his stock rose ...if not for that he might not have been drafted.

It's fun to think what would have happen if we had taken him that year though ...this could be a whole different conversation right now.

i don't think he was saying portis in the first, since we didn't have two first in 2002. if the bowl game you are refering to is the 2001 sugar bowl than you are correct but he came back for his junior season and tore it up for the hurricanes. he had 1200 yards in the regular season and the only reason it wasn't more is because he played for possibly the greatest college football team in history and was on the bench before the first half so willis mcgahee and frank gore could get some reps. the only thing that kept portis out of the first round was his size and he has shown that that isn't a problem.

As much as I like Bush, I'd take M. Williams over him. As much as I want an o-lineman, Williams has just showed more to me. M. Williams could be that 2nd coming of Peppers. He could create problems for QBs like Manning, especially since they won't be getting the Edge back. Problems for McNair and Leftwich/Garrard. JM:twocents:

This was from Sunday's Chronicle concerning him. The more I hear about this guy, the more I like him. There are teams that may trade up to get him before it is all said and done.

"North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams also turned an impressive performance. Williams (6-7, 295) can play end in a 4-3 or a 3-4 alignment. He can play tackle in a 4-3. Williams ran a 4.66 40. He had a vertical leap of 40 1/2 and bench-pressed 225 pounds 39 times.

Most important, Williams impressed the scouts with his attitude. He should be the first defensive player selected in the NFL draft, probably among the first five picks."

"Green Bay would love to have North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams.

The Packers are desperate for help on defense, and Williams is the highest-rated prospect on that side of the ball. Every coach in the league would love to get his hands on the 6-7, 295-pound Williams.

"God didn't make too many guys like that," Titans defensive line coach Jim Washburn said. "I don't know how in the world he can stay on the board too long."

Yes, but coming into the league Kearse was around 250-255 range. I dont think adding the weight will be a problem for lawson. My brother also told me that Jason Taylor had the same problem coming in, and he was a steal for miami in the 3rd or 4th round (i dont recall witch one it was)
