Do you all think that VY or Bush got more out of their best game this year? Obviously I am refering to the Rose Bowl for Vince and the Fresno State game for Reggie. Although Vince has gotten a whole hell of a lotta pub for the title game, I have to say that Bush has gotten more from his Fresno St. game. As a matter of fact, I believe that the whole football community is still obsessed with Reggie b/c of that game. Each of their respective games is a huge reason they are perceieved as top picks, but that game of Reggie's was the beginning of his annointment as the best back ever to come out.

VY Title Game
20/30 267 yards
19 rushes, 200 yards and 3 TDs

VY Season
212/325 26 TDs 10 Ints
155 rushes, 1050 yards and 12 TDs

Bush Fresno St. Game
23 rushes, 294 yards 2 TDs
3 receptions, 68 yards

Bush Season
200 rushes, 1740 yards and 16 TDs
37 receptions, 478 yards and 2 TDs

Bush had a crucial fumble on a kick return late in that Fresno game that put USC in a tough spot. Nobody remembers that, though.

VY didn't turn the ball over against USC and effectively ran for 4 tds (pitch to Taylor).

I would say that the Fresno State game is what sealed the deal, but the Notre Dame game was the one that put him on the map as potentially one of the greatest.

And his greatest play in that game? Illegally shoving his QB into the endzone, otherwise that game would have marked the end of the USC dynasty. As a horn fan, I'm glad he got away with it - I couldn't have dreamed a better title game for us.

Vince Young got away with illegally lateralling the ball forward with his knee down in the National Championship game.

I don't see you complaining.

If you noticed, I said I was glad he got away with it (that's the opposite of complaining). I was just mentioning that without that play ol' Reggie would have had a good performance in a loss, very similar to the USC team in the Rose Bowl.

Nothing wrong with taking what you can get. That was a great decision by Bush, Leinart had no chance otherwise.

Both pitches in the Rose Bowl weren't very smart, Bush's was a little worse. To Young's credit that was an option play and Taylor was the pitchman. Alls well that ends well.

That's exactly right. Both plays in the Rose Bowl were stupid. But one worked and one didn't. If Vince's ended up in a fumble and USC recovered it we would be talking about how stupid he is (i guess we are right now anyways), if Reggie's was successful it would be replayed on Sportscenter for the next decade and we would be talking about how creative and smart he is.

Both guys are gamers and both will do whatever it takes to win.

What about the OK State game where Vince threw for 239 yards 2 TD's and rushed for 267 yards (12.7 avg.) and 2 TD's.

Or the K State game last year where Texas was facing a fourth and 17 at the end of the game and VY said no problem - I'll just glide through these guys for a first.

i think VY comes out the winner on this one that one single game wich might be one of the greatest college footballs games ever imo. bush had an amazing game also dont get me wrong but hell it was fresno state:yahoo: but both players deserve all the accolades they recieve.

Obviously Vince. To have 467 yards in a game is amazing. To have 467 yards in a victory over a team that was being labeled as one of the best ever in the national championship game is just ridiculous. I believe that was the best game I've ever seen one player have. Period.

to be fair, the usc defense did drop a VY pass for an interception in the 4th.

Himmie Haams - I completely agree with your sentiment as do I think most anyone associated with college football does. That being said, I think that the Fresno State game was, and still is being, used to justify Bush as the best player in the draft. The biggest difference between the two unbelievable games that both these guys played is that while Bush's Fresno State game was by far his best as a collegian, Vince's NT game was better than his average game but by no means was it an oddity for him. As you stated in your prior posts, Vince did what he did in that particular game in several of UT's games. Honestly, my whole point in starting this thread was to point out that fact.

While the Fresno game was Bush's best (did VY have any better games in his college career than the 2nd Rose Bowl?) game, other than return yards, he had several similar games as well. The next week he rushed for 260 yds. He had 4 games last year at over 10 ypc. He only had 1 game under 5 ypc and only 2 under 6 ypc. Both of these guys were fantastic college players.

Against Ok. St this year he had 239 passing 2td/1int and 267 rushing with 2 tds. Not quite as accurate through the air. 1st Rose Bowl was close.

I am not going to take the time to do this, but I would bet that if you projected Vince's numbers over a season of him playing FOUR quarters that his numbers would just be silly. I agree that both are fantastic players, my simple premise is that Bush's Fresno State game won him the heisman and the momentum for the first pick. I think that Vince's Rose Bowl game did elevate his stock tremendously, but by then it was assumed that we had won the "Bush Bowl" rather than the first pick making everyone assume that you are retarded for thinking otherwise.

By the same token if you project Bush playing more you get silly stats. Projections like that don't add much IMO.

IMO your premise is wrong on the Heisman. My perception of the Heisman race last year went like this--Bush walked into the year as the projected leader/winner. He progressed thru most of the season in that fashion. Young started picking up more discussion and even was starting to be prefered by some people coming thru the Ok. St, Baylor and Kansas games. Then Reggie went insane on Fresno and there was all sorts of hype about VY needing to respond with a strong game to stay in the hunt. Instead he had a very mediocre game at A&M and unfortunately the voting is done during the end of the season instead of after the post-season.

the heisman is something i followed very closely, and it went down like this.

beginning of the year- Leinart is the golden boy favored to repeat. VY & RB are a debateable runner up

Vy has the ohio state game, and takes the lead in the heisman race. OSU carpenter said their goal was to make sure that when vince left he wasnt a heisman contender anymore- uh oh.

VY leads the race and has the okst game. this shot him up and espn heisman poll had him favored 13-2 over bush. texas has an off week, and during that bush has his fresno game, and now the votes were 15-0 in favor of bush.

it stayed this way for the rest of the season. he had it won after the fresno game.
