View Full Version : So Much for the Aggs/UT Conspiracy Theory

I looked throughout the board before posting this - forgive me if it is repetitive - but it looks like our Aggie coach has nothing against Longhorns, in fact he has hired one as his receivers coach in Kyle Shanahan:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2312895

I hope this puts a stop to the "we won't get Vince because a professional NFL head coach won't be able to put aside his alma mater's pride" threads.

Thoughts?

As well, I am excited to see that we brought back Marciano and Hoke. Good pickup on the part of management.

If you ask me, this Ags/ Horns BS is so played! It's kinda like the Yanks/ Sox. I'm just sick of it. Sounds very childish to me that ADULTS disagree or can't get along because of what school they came from or went to.

I agree. I have no problem debating the drafting of Vince Young on the basis of his skills, which are substantial. It just alarms me, the lengths that some people will go to in order to fabricate support for their position (hometown, Kubiak hates Longhorns, etc. wah wah wah).

I wonder if being Mike Shanahan's son had anything to do with it? Hmmm:rolleyes:

So I didn't. But does it still give adults the right to act like juvenile delinquents? And by the way, who cares?

It goes much deeper, follow the coaching trail to Syracuse - Greg Robinson, Pariani, Applewhite and wrap it around the College Station-Austin axis.

Conspiracy therory? I just see it as simple as Kubiak worked for Mike Shanahan for a long time and when he got his shot he hired his long time mentor and friends son Kyle. I'm stating what seems obvious to me. Kyle is very young (24) and doesn't have very much experience. Just because I have a different opinion than you Jerek is no reason to freak out.

You misunderstand me, in this case.

I too am sure that Kyle got the nod in large part because he is Shanahan's son. That makes sense and I am in agreement with you.

My point being (though issued in somewhat sarcastic format) is that Kubiak hired a Longhorn, and there are a good few posters on this board who are convinced to the ends of the earth that "an Aggie" like Kubiak would never associate with a Longhorn (reread recent board history for a litany of such complaints, to the tune of "we won't draft Vince because [insert ridiculously contrived excuse], in this case people emphatically claiming that we wouldn't draft Vince because Kubiak could never look past their alma maters' rivalry) If you are not part of this bandwagon, then I hope you will forgive me for lumping you with them, but that has been one of the major undertones of this board for weeks now. I apologize for being unclear and re-reading your statements, I believe that there was simply a mutual misunderstanding.

And freaking out? Where did you get that from?

I posted this on another of the coaching threads, lloks like it will fit here also.

Quotes on K. Shanahan:

Chucky:
To be honest, I didn’t like Kyle Shanahan either the first three months that he was on the job (laughing). But I warmed up to him.

http://www.nflcoaches.com/StoryArchives/InsideLockerW9.asp

St Petersburg Times:
Jaguars rookie Matt Jones is among the most intriguing players drafted, a tremendous physical specimen who, because he played quarterback at Arkansas, has no experience at receiver since high school. But Gruden saw the potential early when he and Bucs assistant Kyle Shanahan helped turn the 6-foot-6, 242-pound Jones into a receiver at the Senior Bowl.

http://www.sptimes.com/2005/08/20/Bucs/Lawrie_s_play_gets_co.shtml

more form last years scouting report:
Tampa Bay's offensive quality control coach Kyle Shanahan has spent time getting him (Matt Jones) extra reps and explaining the nuances of his new position throughout the week…

http://www.nfldraftscouting.com/seniorbowlreview.htm

The Bucs coaching staff has made accommodations for Jones. Offensive quality control coach Kyle Shanahan has been assigned to answer any and all of Jones' questions, from how to run a play to how to run a route. Gruden gave the players free time from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday. Shanahan immediately walked over to Jones and scheduled a 1:30 p.m. study session.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft05/news/story?id=1975310

I hope that deos somehting to stop teh questions about why Kyle got the job, and damnit people I don't like defending Longhorns that much :D, but it's atleat a little obvious that Shanahan can do a few things as a coach.

Maybe Kubiak can pull some strings so we can put up a big 12th man flag in the stadium. Wouldn't that be a treat! :redtowel:

That really doesn't explain anything about Kyle. Those are references to the senior bowl last year. Explaining some receiver basics to a qb during a week together at the senior bowl doesnt make you a good coach.

Chuckie's quote isn't that reassuring.

Then I challange you to find anything legit that supports your claim that the determinig factor in him getting the job was his dad. Finding anything on any caoch who's title was "Offensive Qualtiy Control" is damn near impossible. I can't tell you held that position for any other team, not even the Texans. For him to mentioned at all I take as a good sign.

And the WR he coached up at the Senior Bowl was Matt Jones, probaly the man who left Mobile with the most hype. Maybe this means will draft VY and make him a QB also :yahoo: :jk:

I'll take the somments of any coach who's got what I want for my team, a Supe Bowl ring.

You got to be friggin kidding me. Shanahan is here because of Kubiak, plain and simple. I have no problems with coaches taking care of people in their networking circles, but to say that Lil' Shanny earned it due to his work with a WR at an All-Star game is ludicrous.

I said the DETERMINING factor, I'm not naive enough to think that the family relations didn't play some part in the hire. But I find it ridiculous that people think it's the only reason; 'cause I think Kubiak is smarted then that and if hes not were in a worse coaching situation then the one we left.

Actually, I think Hoth Boys point was not that lil Shan is the ultimate man, but that there might be reason to look forward to his being here, and that he was not merely and only a product of the good ol boy system, but that though young, he does have some technical merit to his coaching abilities. No doubt the family code was a big reason, but I doubt if it was the only reason.

My take.

People have the right to say or do something dumb (not calling anyone here in particular that). Nobody should care, and I think that is the point Jerek is making. Kubiak is getting paid way too much to let something as petty as college rivalry decide his staffing issues.

Considering the amount of empty seats at Reliant this past season, I don't know if the Texans' "fans" have deserved that yet. True fans stick with a team and go to the games even when they lose. I realize there are a lot of great fans that can't afford the seats, but if you are a season ticket holder, have already paid for the seats, you should show support regardless. That's just my opinion, but after growing up in Colorado and moving down here 10 years ago I have begun to notice the bandwagon atmosphere. Astros lose at the start of last year and the stadium is half empty. This is the year after they came within one game of the world series.

Wow, first they draft Sloan Thomas in the 6th round (and never play him in a game), then they get a recievers coach from UT. If they can hire a UT grad as equipment manager, I'm sold!
