Gary Kubiak will get off to a blazing start as Texans coach if he is able to hire Broncos offensive line coach Rick Dennison as his offensive coordinator/offensive line coach and Buccaneers defensive line coach Rod Marinelli as his defensive coordinator.

Kubiak and Dennison are close friends, but like all Denver assistants, Dennison is under contract. There is no reason for coach Mike Shanahan to let him out of his contract unless he just wants to be a good guy and allow Dennison to leave for a promotion.

Marinelli has been with the Bucs since 1996 the same season Tony Dungy was hired as head coach and Monte Kiffin as defensive coordinator. Marinelli, who interviewed for the Lions' head-coaching job and will interview with the Raiders, is regarded as the premier defensive line coach in the NFL.

I think Dennison is likely to come unless he is offered the OC job in Denver because of Kubiak's depature.

I think we could get the guy from the Bucs as Russ Grimm is likely to get the job in Detroit. I am not sure about Oakland though.

Russ Grimm is currently the Steelers OL coach, so I seriously doubt he'd come here as our DC...The guy I'm hoping for is Jerry Gray, if he is no longer under contract with the Bills...

I know. I was stating that Russ Grimm is likely to offered the HC job for Detroit so Marinelli will not get this job and thus could be available. I think Marinelli could be a legit candidate in Oakland considering Al Davis likes young coaches, but ESPN has reported that Al Saunders is the leading candidate for the Raiders job.

I think that this is the 2nd most important hiring decision to be made outside of the HC. If this team is going to start becoming a winning franchise over the next several seasons and be in serious playoff contention, it is going to have to start with a dramatic improvement on the defensive side of the ball. We need to have someone be able to come in and make an assessment of the personnel and develop a defensive system that incorporates the talents of the players on the roster, versus pounding square pegs into round holes. Whoever it is, it will be a glorius day to have Vic Fangio's successor hired. :redtowel:

I know lots of people are excited about taking a RB (not to be named) or a QB (not to be named) as the way to go to get this team winning, but running a better D is going to be the real key to the path to respectability and contention, especially playing in the AFC South.

Man. I happy for the Broncos and Kubiak right now advancing and all, but the assistant pool is shrinking.

I'd like for the Steelers to win Sunday, but I wouldn't be too mad if Danver went to the Superbowl.

I had heard that Shanahan ok'd Kubiak to bring a few of the coaches with, and Dennison was one of them. I don't remember the others exactly, but I want to say that their WR and RB coaches were among them.

well the longer it takes for kubes to be officially hired, the longer it will take for him to bring in a defensive coordinator. im sure they will be running thin on guys by the time denver looses.

Well, no hate mail but I don't know how much leadership he could exert over the defense after the poor season and his subsequent firing.

I just dont think Capers would come be the DC.. that would just be...ackward. I mean.. he was running the whole show last season.. now he has to defer to our new HC.

Kinda like getting fired from your managerial position and then rehired as an assistant to the new manager. that has to hurt the pride.

I can definitely see Capers getting a DC job somewhere this year but I agree it would be really weird for them to hire him back here right after firing him.

well it seems everyone on the board claims the same thing. great coordinator, horrible head coach. i dont think anyone questions his knowledge or leadership.

it might be awkward, but look at kippy who was fired, then had an interview for the HC position. i know its not a direct comparison, but it might be a humbling experince for him to come in and take charge of the defense he helped build. and no doubt he will be better than fangio.

IF and a doubtful IF, capers was offered - im sure he would consider the opportunity.

I agree with your first statement. It might take Kubiak another year just to get his coaches in place!

With regards to Capers being our DC: I wouldn't scream out loud against it. It's not a common thing, but think of Gunther Cunningham getting re-hired as the Chiefs DC after being their HC for a couple of years. So it's not completely undheard of.

Although, I'd like to see new blood introduced to the team.

What are you people smoking ??? there wasn't a good coach in the whole system.Capers was the HC he was incharge of the defense also, stood there with his thumb up his nose the entire year didn't change a dam thing. Took two years to get him out of here and now people what to bring him back unbelievable.

A key to turning the team around will be hiring Marinelli as our DC. He comes from the Monte Kiffin Defensive Cordinator Tree, sort of like the Bill Walsh tree. If you look at the desendents from this tree you will find that some of the best Ds use it. The Bears Bucs and Colts are some of the teams that use it and in case you don't know they all had good season and were in the playoffs. Hiring him will force a 4-3 D and we will win games again

i dont smoke at all actually. capers is a great defensive coordinator who didnt want to let fangio go. probably one of his downfalls is his faith in other coaches.

im not going to make an excuse for him because he probably should have let fangio go earlier, but when we have been building this defense for several years its going to be hard to just find another 3-4 coordinator. i just want to see him given the opportunity to lead the defense (which he can do very well) to see what we can do with a real genius of defense.

or we could go to a 4-3 (not my favorite), but thats for another thread

A key to turning the team around will be hiring Marinelli as our DC.
sources say hes been looked at by the raiders and lions. he wouldnt come here as a DC when he can go somewhere else to be a HC.

I don't want him back, but he was pretty hands off with Vic Fangio. It made no sense - because he was a defensive-minded coach, Capers should have micromanaged the defense and left the offense to someone better qualified in that area. Not the other way around.

Capers as DC is easily one of the craziest ideas I have ever seen on this board. Maybe in a couple of years we could entertain the notion from a football perspective. But from a Front Office/Coaching perspective it would have been like President Bush in 2000 retaining Clinton's services as Secretary of State. On the field chemistry only trumps operations chemistry for the day to day health of the team, in my opinion.

I would definitly take Bates as DC. He built at top 10 defense in Miami and had started to turn the Packers defense around. He's been fired twice in two years, but not for his own performance either time. I think he really has something to prove.

Gray is definitly another canidate worth considering.

Gunthe Cunningham was not even in football when he was asked to come back to KC.. It wasnt like he just got fired...

I think Jerry Gray May get the Bills HC job.. Why not? It would be a great nucleus on offense and hes already got his defense set.

Marinelli I would like as DC but that would swap us to a cover 2 defense which I am not very fond of. lots of holes in the middle of the field, and our safeties have to be sure tacklers and hard hitters which really is not our safeties..

Not to mention that would really put us in a bind on the Defensive line, mos of our 3-4 ends would be DTs in a 4-3 not DE, who becomes the Pass rush DE? Peek or Babin? they would need to add some weight. It would just be a 2 year project to get our defense into a quality cover 2 or a 4-3 for that matter...

4-3 how it would be at this pont...

Babin, Walker, Smith, Peek
TJ Payne

Orr, Greenwood, Wong
Polk Anderson

Buchanon Robinson
Faggins Sanders

Earl
Walker
Coleman

Gunther Cunningham was with the Titans as Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers coach with the Titans when he came back to the Chiefs. He was DC for the Chiefs from 1995-1998 and HC for the Chiefs 1999-2000. He was with the Titans from 2001-2003 and returned to the Chiefs in 2004.

I'm really not fond of a 4-3 defense cover 2 or not. Look what happened to the Colts defense Sunday it leaves holes in the middle and the way our team tackled last year is just a time bomb ticking away every game. I believe the better defense is the 3-4, look at how the Steelers did the Colts. The reason the players and most of the people want to switch defenses is because it hasn't been run the way it should be. I dont know what the **** Fangio was thinking when he was trying to pull the cover 2 3-4 crap. Remember at the end of the year when we were starting to get pressure on the QB we were being aggressive even Dunta said it we let the pass rusher's loose. I wouldn't be completely against bringing Capers as DC or someone with some 3-4 experience like the way the Steelers play. That would be nice.

AP reports Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Jerry Gray believes he will not be with the team for the 2006 season. He was recently informed that he is no longer being considered to fill the team's head coaching vacancy. The Bills also gave him permission to seek jobs elsewhere in the NFL, which is another reason he does not believe he will be with the team. Gray said, "If you're a defensive coordinator and they want you, they're not going to give you permission to go somewhere else. ... So I'm pretty sure that means they're letting you go be a D coordinator elsewhere because they've got other plans here."
