View Full Version : Why aren't they doing this?

Why has no one brought up the idea of putting the franchise tag on carr, to make teams around the league believe that were going to pick a quarterback with the first pick. If we pick up the options for carr than every GM around the league is going to realise that were not going to pick a Qb and therefore not trade with us because they know were not going to pick a quarterback.
Instead the texans should talk to david carr and tell them that their going to franchise him therefor makeing teams have to trade with us so they don't loose out on vince young or matt leinart. Than after the draft we can sign david carr to a new deal similar to what he would have recieved if we picked up his option.
This helps the Texans by
1. Being able increase the value of the #1 pick and pick up additional picks and still get reggie bush say at #2 or #3.
2. The drafts a game of poker and if we pick up carrs option before the draft than we've already shone are hand to every other team.

The franchise tag is expensive and it would mean we would have to either sign him to another contract at the end of the season or release him. The extension is cheaper than franchise (which is around $10mil cap value) and gets us 2 years

I understand what your saying, all i was implying was that he would be franchised in order to keep him while working out a long-term deal during the off-season. The franchise idea was to drive up the value of our #1 pick, by letting the other teams think that Carr's position as our QB is not solidified

from my understanding, the franchise tag is the average of the top 3 paid guys at your respective position. I see Peyton, Vick, and ?? but vick and peyton have 100+ mil contracts.

now, what is this i hear about a transition tag, and how can it be applied to carr?

The franchise tag this year is set at 10 million, as I read that was how much the CHargers would have to pay Brees if they tagged him again. Last season it was just over 8 million

Franchise tag is average of top 5 at your position. Peyton Vick Culpepper McNabb and Brady I think
