Mathis is our first All Pro Texan I think. Walker, Glenn and AJ were pro bowlers only I do believe.

Congrats Mathis, I sure hope your agent had some provisions in your contract in the form of an incentive clause, etc. for an achievement such as this.

I thought both Andre Johnson and Gary Walker were selected as All-Pro's as well.

Right on! :thumbup

A bit of good news in a bottle floating on a sea of poo. Last season just brings out the dung comparisons, 'eh? ;)

Congrats to Mathis, though!!

I dont think very many 4th round picks have clauses in their contracts. None the less, Congrats Jerome!

Hey, that's what lawyers/agents are for. Mathis outha sue for malpractice
if he wasn't taken care of by his. Oh by the way, least we forget, gotta give Cass a big atta-boy for finding this-diamond-in-the-rough.

Congrats to Jerome. A major award for him, and the franchise. One positive from Casserly's resume.

A big congrats to Jerome, on the Pro-Bowl and being named an All-Pro.

Just more proof that small school talent can and does succed in the NFL.

Probably not predicted this kind of sucess but IIRC, when the draft happened last season there were plenty of people on the MB who were excited about that particular choice, lots of MB hype for a 4th rounder.

As an aside, let me add that I would very much like to see Joe Marciano as a special teams coach for the Texans next season.

He is very well-liked by his players, a terrific motivator and teacher, enthusiastic, ST has done very well for the Texans, and is well thought of by various staff members in the Texans organization.

From what I understand, the new HC has say as to who they hire for various positions, and I hope he comes back and wants to come back.

cant say I agree with that.

MATHIS has done very well for the Texans, everyone else hasnt been very good. Cant coach speed, those returns were all Mathis.

Kris Brown lost us like 4 games this year- hes Marciano's responsibility. our punting was worse than years before, and punt returns were non existant.

Look at the stats. Look at the Texans special team stats since our existence. Most years the ST performed way better than the rest of the team did--which suggests he took the same talent that was on the rest of the team, and coached them up pretty well.

Also, I was at a clinic where one of the assistant coaches was saying that Marciano was the one that was selling that we needed to pick Mathis. And this same clinic, the coach showed some film of kick return where Mathis got a TD--it went exactly like Coach Joe drew up the play. Had Coach Joe not been sold on Mathis, and we mighta ended up with Swinton.

I am not easily impressed with people, but the few times I have seen Coach Joe break down film and teach people stuff, he blew me away. He makes you want to run through brick walls for him.

Congratulations, Jerome. I for one wouldn't have picked a rookie receiver from a D1-AA school as being the first All-Pro for the Texans, but it is a well deserved honor.

Congratulations to Jerome! First Texan to be elected as an ALL Pro. Unlike the Probowl were 84 guys go only 28 guys are AllPro. Much more prestigouse (sp).

Well deserved. As bitter sweet as it was giving up many touchdowns this year, I knew that it meant Jerome was coming on the field. He truly had me on the edge of my seat in anticipation every time he was on the field.

Texans' Mathis named All-Pro
Colts, Seahawks lead the way with four players each

By JOHN MCCLAIN
Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

Rookie receiver Jerome Mathis, who returned two kickoffs for touchdowns this season, was voted as the return man on the Associated Press' All-Pro Team.

"I just want to thank the guys that block in front of me and have faith that I will hit the holes they created," Mathis said. "I would not have imagined having this good of a rookie season, but this is a great honor, and I look forward to having a better 2006."

Mathis had already been voted to the Pro Bowl. He's the Texans' only Pro Bowl selection this season.

"It's quite and honor for both Jerome and the Texans," said general manager Charley Casserly, who drafted Mathis in the fourth round. "We're very proud of what he has accomplished this year. Being named to the Pro Bowl and the All-Pro team as a rookie both exciting for him and the organization."

I know its a bigger award to be selected as All-pro - I just thougth both Johnson and Walker were selected as All-Pro's also. Wasnt sure about Glenn. I looked around and they come up as All-Pro when I recently pulled some searches on them. - I dont have the AP list for those years they were selected - Can someone look it up if they have access to the AP archives?

The 2004 All-Pro WRs were TO and Muhammed (1st team) and Harrison and Ward (2nd team). AJ was just a Pro Bowler.

Beyond that, I don't know.

Marciano was liked and respected by the players. As well, we really only have one kicker on the team, so it isn't really an option for Marciano to cut or sit him. Who would we bring in instead, Jose Cortez?

I would not mind Marciano coming back on. Mathis was a difference maker, no doubt. I mean, did J J Moses ever run one back? ... But still, Marciano did well coaching the special teams unit, and was one of, if not the most, liked and respected coaches on the staff.

Mathis was the best kick returner in the NFL this year, by any measure of the term. He was left off the Pro Bowl ballot and still made it on the strength of coach and player votes. He was then voted All-Pro. He managed to do all that despite the injury bug. So no, I guess durability doesn't factor in when you compare him to his peers.

As for backhanded remarks, your post served no purpose aside from detracting from the first ever All-Pro Texan. Nice way to contribute to the boards.

A couple of years ago, I went to a clinic where Marciano was breaking down special teams films. And he showed a couple of plays where JJ had broke through the first wave of players but got caught from behind.

Then Marciano said that he liked JJ a lot but that, in time, we were going to have to get a returner with more breakaway speed. Which was a little sad, because I liked JJ but the film dint lie.

Even with JJ as the returner.......

in 2002 we were ranked 7th in special teams, and in 2003 we were ranked 4th in special teams. In 2004, the Texans were ranked 27th, and maybe that was why the draft staff decided to give Coach Joe some love and get Mathis with the pick, because Marciano was lobbying hard to get him. Actually, we were probably ranked 27th, because IIRC, both Stanley and Brown were playing hurt for a part of the season.

Coaches need players and players need coaches, but given the newness of our team and the players we had, this sort of record to me reflects some good coaching and I would like to see Coach Marciano back.

And back to the main topic of the thread---GO JOHNNY GO!!!!
