Let's help Mr. McNair here. I assume Carr's staying, but lord knows he could use a little competition. So: what FA (or trade, for that matter) QB would you bring in to push Carr? Has to be a QB who could run the team and be a starter if he actually beat Carr out of the position.

Competition for the members of the offensive line is what's really needed.

I'd go with Kitna though he was horrible in the Bengals loss to the Chiefs

Reggie McNeal is the answer to competiton to David Carr Reggie McNeal will be lucky to get drafted after the stunt he pulled at the end of last season where he was going to be the starter against Texas but didnt show up to any of the team meetings.

He is the franchise signal caller and in a new system will put up numbers similar to carson Palmer. Yeah I said it. Banks should be gone, Ragone you are the backup and whoever the best QB in the 7th round is that is my guy.

And so for yet another year, Carr will not be challenged in training camp and will not have anyone to push him.

He will finally have QB coach and a HC to push him. That is who he will have. I have no problem with a QB not having competition when he is your guy, and in case you have not noticed Carr is our guy.

if we get kubiak, which looks like the most fesable option at the moment, look for Plummer like number, minus the stupid INT's. That sort of production (20-25 Td's with 10 INT's coupled with DD and Wells/Morency giving us a solid running game (i am theorzing we go the D'Brick/trade down route) and we should have a top 10 offense. also, having a good O takes pressure off the D, minimizing the other teams running game, all in all, a HUGE upgrade over what we had this season....

PS: how about some blitzes and man coverage this season? hell ya!!!

also, seeing as i completly ingnored the actual question in my first post, how Kurt Warner's contract looking with the card's? i think danny green wants to keep him, but if he is let go i would love to pick him up as a viable #2...

This is exactly why he has regressed... there is no threat of him getting benched so he's had nothing to worry about. If dude was on any other team in the NFL he would have been sat down a dozen times over the past 25 games.

It's human nature to do better when someone is pushing you then when you've been handed the job, that's all I'm saying. Almost every other QB in the league had to win his job and beat out a vet except Carr. Palmer is the guy in Cinci put even he had to wait because he couldnt beat on Kitna. Big Ben wasnt the QB in Pittsburg until the starter went down with an injury.

You can still be the guy and have competition.

AJ dropped a lot of balls this year and Mathis dropped a few of he small selection. After this season, I wouldnt say that AJ and Mathis have better hands then Lelie and Watts.

Coach C.
01-03-2006, 03:51 PM
I would, and I did. Lelie is known for his drops and Watts like AJ had the dropsies this year. Carr regressed if you will because the system he played in is terrible. I mean is Plummer a better QB or is the system he is in now just fit him better. A QB that has competition does by no means mean that you are going to do better. There are more people that fold under competition than do well. That is human nature and fact.

If my QB cant handle competition, i dont want him leading the 2 minute drive down by 4 starting from his 20 yard line.

Coach C.
01-03-2006, 03:55 PM
I am not scared, if you are scared go to church. Personally Carr makes a whole hell of lot more cash than I do and if he folds that is on him as a man. Do I think competition will help Carr, I doubt it could hurt, but I also understand that a QB coach would do more for Carr than bringing in any possible competition.

You see, we'll just hand it off to Bush and he'll get an 80 yard run and win it for us. :yahoo:

I'm really hoping that was sarcasm. No matter what most people on this board seem to think, Bush will not score a touchdown everytime he touches the ball. He might get a touch or two in the two minute drill, but it's the QB's job to drive the team down the field, not the RB/

What other great QBs in the league this year have someone "pushing" them for their job. I dont classify Carr as great that's why he needs competition, and you can think Carr will be great but you cannot say he is great.

Palmer had Kitna.
Big Ben had Maddox.
Harrington had McMahon and now has Garcia.
Eli had Warner.

These are just off my head from previous years and none of them are high priced, they are just QBs that pushed the guy that was gonna start sooner or later.

Did these guys push these guys are just get beaten out by better talent. If you check that Warner was sent packing for the young stud as will the rest of the names you have on your list. Technically isnt Banks the equivalent of the guys you listed. So Carr has been pushed according to you. Right?

I wouldn't mind DC getting some comp for the starting job. It can't hurt.

Is this really a component of NFL football, or is it more entirely baseless hearsay that people have pulled out of their *** to slam DC?

It is not that common in the NFL - if it happens more than once a year, at that - to see a QB's success tied to the imminent threat of his backup usurping his role.

We do not need to pay some high-priced has-been to come on our roster, when we can pay a good coach 20% of that.

I agree here. Even if you proceed from a position where you believe this absolutely must happen in the development of a QB (with zero evidence but hey, never stopped us before did it) then the time for it to happen was three years ago, not today. The Texans should have signed that tired old veteran to come in and take the beating Carr absorbed during his rookie season and that guy would ideally get beat out by Carr the next year. That you can make a case for. Bringing him in now is a waste of time. If you're bringing someone in now that means Carr isn't your guy and you want this veteran to come in and play.

If the Texans wanted that we'd know by now.

All those guys I mentioned have won some type of award due to they good QB play, except Garcia, who has been to the pro bowl, and McMahon. Banks won a super bowl ring watching from the sideline.

And to jerek: I'd take Kita, he should come cheap and he would figure that he has a better chance playing in Houston than he does in Cinci due to a new coach coming in who has no ties with Carr.

Where do you get that Carr is a "great QB in the league"? Carr is a lousy QB so far, and has proven it over and over for four years. I thought we all agreed on that, though some think it's ONLY BECAUSE of the coaching and the O line, and others believe it's mostly on Carr.

My assumption was that a sensible new head coach will no longer want to baby Carr, and will, in consequence, bring in a legit veteran who can run the team if Carr turns out to be just as bad with new coaching as he was with Capers and Co. Wouldn't you want to bring in someone you knew you could trust to run your offense when the only guy available on the team has a record like Carr's?

That being the question, which veteran are they going to go after? I assume Banks is gone and Ragone is either 3rd string or traded.

Most other teams don't have a woeful QB performance over 4 years to look at and thus no need to bring in someone to push the starter. Most other teams wouldn't have sat through 4 years of Carr's poor performance in the first place.

If you're bringing someone in now that means Carr isn't your guy and you want this veteran to come in and play.

Strongly disagree. If I'm the new coach I want to be sure I have QB insurance. Maybe I don't want Banks because he's not solid and dependable, too much a gunslinger with a reputation for bad judgement, and I don't trust Ragone since he hasn't been tested (i.e., he's not Billy Volek, for example). So what I do is bring in a solid guy like Kitna or equivalent who might just sit and advise and so on, but who COULD run the team if I find out that Carr's problems are Carr's and not the coaching. Doing anything else seems irresponsible.

Isnt that the reason Ragone is there?? He did a tremendous job over in Europe and really has a lot of ability. I doubt the reason he didnt crack the lineup had anything to do with talent...I believe it was more of the "its carr's job" attitude within this coaching staff that didnt have the cojones to bench him.

Big Ben had Maddox

I don't care who you are, that's funny! GIT-R-DONE!

Maddox had one year that you would say was good. He never "pushed" Ben. I don't think the "pressure" from the backup is necessary for a QB to succeed. If he doesn't have the drive to succeed without a little pressure on him, he shouldn't be in the NFL to begin with. The only QB with enough talent to "pressure" Carr would be Brooks and he is an underachiever. I would prefer Kitna, who is more reliable and doesn't fumble the ball so much. But he is not talented enough to "pressure" Carr just as he wasn't talented enough to "pressure" Palmer. Palmer was anointed without any competition, just as in Houston. They just waited until year 2...

Personally, I think we should have started Banks the first year. I think that would have helped Carr more than anything.

BTW, don't get me wrong about Kitna. He made the most of his ability.

I say we go after Sherman for OC so we can have Favre for 1 year. DC can watch him practice and prepare so he can see what it takes to be a GREAT QB.

This is all highly unlikely but since some of the guys were being funny I thought I'd throw in my "dream scenario". So please no replies about how this can't happen b/c "yadda-yadda-yadda".
