Excerpt taken from the post-game article on ESPN.com:

"...The Texans are in for big offseason changes, with Capers expected to be fired Monday after four seasons. Bush has been on fans' minds in Houston and San Francisco since November -- but the 49ers, Bush's favorite team growing up, dropped out of the top five in the draft by doubling their win total from last season.

"I hope this is the last time we have the No. 1 pick," said Texans owner Bob McNair, who said he would address the team's coaching situation Monday. "At the same time, it is of great value to us. ... We're going to have four picks in the first 70 players. That means we're going to get some good players."

"It's a little premature right now to say who we're taking," said general manager Charley Casserly, who's expected to keep his job. "But I think everybody knows we aren't taking Matt Leinart."

Bush, who watched from Los Angeles while preparing for Wednesday's Rose Bowl against Texas, claims he still doesn't know whether he'll enter the draft.

"Whatever happens in this game, it won't have any effect on me," Bush said. "Obviously it will just [affect] who gets the first pick in the NFL draft. ... Like I said from Day 1, I won't be worried about it until after the season...

---------------------

Carr is staying.

Looks like we could trade spots with S.F. so they get Bush and Bush gets them, but I'm not sure we'd still get a premium player in S.F.'s draft position.

What if Bush DID NOT declare for the draft? Now THAT would be interesting.

It would be interesting if Bush didn't declare, but I think it would be downright stupid on his part. He has 2 National Championships, possibly 3 in a couple days, a Heisman, and He's expected to be thew number 1 pick. What is left for him to prove? The only way he can go is down if he stays another year. Plus there's no guarantee that he will be drafted by the Texans when he declares, there's always the possibility of a trade somewhere.

Now look at Leinhert. He should have come out last year as I believe he would have been taken number 1 by SF, now it looks like he'll be going to the Saints at the number 2 spot.

*cough* Thanks for the input.

If anyone pulls an "Eli," it's going to be Matt Leinart refusing to play for the Saints. Worry about your own draft first. Houston is a fine place to play.

SF isn't going to trade up to get Reggie Bush. They have even more holes than we do and if anything will trade down from their spot.

If he pulled an Eli on anyone it would be the Saints. I can't imagine anyone wanting to play for the Saints, the only thing the Saints have going for them is they might move to Los Angeles.

Texans have some of the nicest facilities in the NFL, a great stadium, a great owner, a history of extending contracts early if you play well, and the Texans are in a pretty big football market.

Any smart agent wouldn't let their player pull that stuff.

Plus he is on record with ESPN saying he would play for the Texans if drafted.

The Saints have "the sympathy factor". They were hit by a hurricane, etc..after all..the "national media" calls them "Americas Team" now...The Superdome will be back soon, and The saints will have another playoff win!!!

Also, Matt L is a class act, and can't see him pulling that crap either. But a superstar like Bush, well..he WOULD pull an ELi on the Saints, I'm sure of it and well, might on y'all as well. You never know whats in the heads of these millionaires....

Everyone makes fun of Casserly and his draft picks, but if you have ever listened to him around the draft. The players and the deals that he has made is because Capers has really wanted those players. Capers wanted Babin!! Capers is the one who wanted Phillip Buchanon (yes I know this was a trade).

Capers wanted help on the D-Line and the guy he wanted they got. He wanted Travis Johnson, who was rated the top d lineman in last years draft. Not only did Casserly get T. Johnson he also picked up the 2nd overall pick in the 3rd for moving down 5 spots from last years draft.

What about the players Casserly have been successful with. Everyone wanted Cass to trade up a couple of years ago to get DeAngelo Hall, but Cass and Capers wanted D. Robinson more, I think that turned out well.

What about Dom. Davis (3rd Rd)? Jerome Mathis(4th rd) (our lone pro bowl player) CC Brown (6th Rd) ( I think CC is going to be a darn good SS for years to come), Demarcus Faggins (6th Rd)?? These players have already helped this team and will continue to help these team.

Casserly wasn't the problem. Capers was and thats why he lost his job. I'm happy they kept Casserly.

Matt Miller: Are you a Chargers fan since you grew up in San Diego?
Reggie Bush: Oh for sure. The Chargers really do their thing. They have an incredible offense and an up and coming defense with some good backs with strong futures. They have one of the best, if not the best, running backs in the NFL and a very underrated tight end that is incredible.

Matt Miller: I’m telling you, as a 49ers fan, I’d love to see you up the coast next year.
Reggie Bush: It would be cool to reunite with Alex (Smith). To me though, I just want to play the game. The team doesn’t matter.

Matt Miller: So you won’t be pulling an Eli Manning?
Reggie Bush: (laughs). Nah, just to be given the opportunity to play in the NFL is a blessing.

Why is Cass showing all his cards? Don't say we're definitely NOT drafting Leinart, keep all your options open, maybe see how bad NO wants him, then draft him and hold a king's ransom, get NO's 2nd pick and extra picks and STILL get Bush...ya know it can happen but with Cass opening his big mouth it's limiting our negotiating edge. Carr hasn't played that great (yeah I know it's not his fault) to get a public vote of confidence, let him sweat a little even we do extend his contract.

If I were a Saints fan I wouldn't want Horn around at all. He was complaining about the team going back to New Orleans and made it obvious that he wanted to stay in San Antonio. He made some comments about the Saints fans booing them and said he preferred to stay where the fans were better and the team was wanted (in San Antonio).

Saints,

I am not trying to offend, because I have absolutely nothing against the Saints. However, your owner is bent on moving the team from Louisiana, and that instability alone makes it a very difficult for any player to be attracted to the franchise. I don't see how the Saints can prosper in NO, and while your owner is a fraud, he does have the capacity to recognize that. I hope you get Leinhart, but if I were his agent I would try to be creative...

I think he's more interested in driving up the price for Bush. As much as I & most other "trade down fans" would love to see us trade down one spot, & then make another trade, those kind of things don't happen in the real world.

Casserly is right in focusing on what he's got in his hands, instead of trying to get cute. However, by stating the obvious, he's telling all the Leinart suitors that New Orleans will be drafting him. Now, if Houston should get some sweet offers for Leinart, then New Orleans might get nervous & blink. How 'bout it Tennessee (#3)?

I understand your point..and am kinda scared about it to be honest. But lets be serious. IF the Saints move its to LA not San-AnLOOT-io. That said, going to LA Leinhart IS secure in going to the Saints. Even more so--the Saints have "Cap considerations" given to them this year to be competive.

The Saints aren't going to trade up to get Matt Leinart. Benson is an extremely cheap owner and probably is happy that they have the #2 pick because now he won't have to pay him as much. Casserly is saying that they aren't going to pick Leinart because they aren't. It is no secret that they aren't looking for a quarterback this year. I'm sure if the Niners had the first pick they would be saying the same thing.

I can't believe you made such a statement. In any team sport, the GM has to get players that fit the current coaches system. No GM worth his salt is going to make all the personnel decisions based on his own opinions. If the coach doesn't have complete confidence in the player chosen, then he's most likely, not going to give that player his due diligence.

tulexan
01-02-2006, 12:54 PM
Yeah the job of the GM is to get players that the coach wants. A coach will say that he wants a certain type of player and the general manager has to go out and get the best player available who fits those specifications.

The Saints are probably praying that Vince Young declares. I would be if I were in their shoes!

Reggie Bush doesn't strike me as the type to do what Eli and his father pulled in the 2004 draft. In every interview I've seen him do, even after he won the Heisman, he's always been a soft-spoken, classy kid, an obvious product of GOOD PARENTING. It's hard not to like the guy, any of them (Leinart, Young), really. They're all superb athletes who just want to play some ball and get paid. I'd love to have any of them as the face of our team.

What strikes me funny is that Casserly just got a HUGE pardon from the governor (McNair) and he's running his mouth about us "not taking Leinart because we don't need a QB..." or some jazz like that, and yet we haven't a a new head coach yet--A new head coach who might say, "Get rid of Carr and get me Leinart..."

1. Casserly's "not taking Leinart" comment was a ploy to drive up Reggie's value and get more for Reggie when the time comes.

or...

2. Casserly is running his mouth when he shouldn't because the new head coach would more than likely desire to be in on the decision making for personnel. Thus, we might have Kubiak in the fold already and Kubiak had said he can live with Carr at QB.

Either way, it just looks ignorant for a GM in the NFL to say that we're "not taking" a certain player, especially when that certain player is going to go at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, or somewhere near that number.
