View Full Version : Lions' Mariucci Fired

As reported byESPN (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2236033):

After Thursday's 27-7 home loss to Atlanta on national television, the Detroit Lions' playoff hopes are finished. Now it appears their coach may be done too.

The Lions are in discussions that could lead to the firing of head coach Steve Mariucci possibly as early as Friday, according to reports in the Detroit Free Press and on WJBK-TV in Detroit. After two and a half disappointing years with Mariucci at the helm, the loss to the Falcons on Thanksgiving may have been the final straw.

MOOCH IS NOT A GOOD COACH.
He is a media creation, he is all media hype.

#1 his offensive is the most conservative in the NFL, yes, I know who your coach is, and I say Mooch is double that

#2 He is a wuss

#3 He is stubborn

#4 He never plays his best players in favor of "his" guys, who always suck

#5 He is a wuss

#6 He is a wuss

#7 He runs the same 20 plays all game long.

#8 even with the defense 8 in the box, he still calls 5 yard curl routes.

#9 He is such a freaking wuss

#10 He for some reason hates the following players

Kevin Jones
Roy Williams
Charles Rogers
Mike Williams
Scotty Vines the #1 WR on the team that the ***** cut durring the season
Corey Schelsinger
Casey Fitsimmons
Joey Harrington (hates him the most)
Torrance Holt
Donte Curry
Keith Smith
Stanley Wilson

He Loves

Shawn Bryson
Artose Pinner
Paul Smith
Glenn Martinez
Brock Marion
Bracey Walker
RW McQuarters
Jeff Garcia
James Davis
(all of these guys aren't any good, I do respect Garcia's efforts though)
All these guys get more playing time because they are "Moochies"

He is the single worst coach I have ever seen for the Lions
And no Lions coach has ever gone on to another NFL headcoaching job after leaving this team.

Mooch is so bad I wish Fontz, Ross, or Morningwiegh were still here.

Im going to have to go with IHATEGEEKS on this one. As far as the detroits playcalling goes, he has the talent and speed at the wideout positions to go deep and strech the field and instead constantly throws slants. Streching the field should be a strength for his team, but instead he enables it to be. I have been relocated to Mich. so now I get to watch the lions. Joey H. biggest problem and the lions biggest problem is they can't sustain long drives on offense, but in Steve's system when your just throwing 5 yard slant passes, you have to be able to sustain a long and multiple play drive to score. Joey H. has had success throwing verticaly. Instead of coaching to his teams strengths he coaches to their weaknesses. I would hate to see steve coach this team next year. btw Scotty Vines is a gamer. I find it fitting that a guy that goes undrafted and cut outperforms 3 1st round picks. Im not knocking your receivers, I still think R. Williams is going to be a great player in this league. I think it has to do more with the system their playing in right now

Stick by it all you want.

It is a fact , No Lions Head Coach has ever went on to a headcoach job in the NFL after leaving this team.
Mooch would be the first, and the least deserving out of a long list.

He gets alot of love from the national media and jockswinging from ESPN. Because he really is a nice guy.

And that is one of his biggest flaws.

Capers should be fired now, so they can start the evaluation for next year. Put an assitant in as interim, and play out the season letting everyone get some playing time including Ragone. No harm in letting more play so we can see what's there.

I don't see any reason or advantage to fire Capers now as oppossed to waiting until the end of the season. give the man some respect and thanks for helping the Texans franchise come into existance, its not all his fault for the losing this year, someone let two excellent character guys go & for nothing, and replaced them with two bad apples in Buchanon and Riley. now if thats on Capers or Casserly I don't know but firing one Capers now does not represent this organization as the class act we all know it is, unlike the Lions

This is the brutal reality of big business. But I gotta feel for anyone who
gets canned, especially during the Holidays for the younger assistants with
dependants who haven't had the time or enjoyed the higher income brackets of their superiors so that they can establish some degree of financial security.

They were signed to contracts. And must still be paid until someone else picks em up. So they will get checks in the mail instead of picking them up at the office.. That is what the union is for, protection...

I agree. Let's put Hollings in for the rest of the year. That way, he gets some serious snaps. If he doesn't show any development over the last 5 games, then there'll be no more excuses for keeping him.

Also, slide C.C.Brown over to FS to play alongside Earl at SS. Start McKenzie opposite of Dunta. Start Mathis in place of Bradford. Put Wells in at FB full time & play more 2 back alignments. Try Wand at RT, start Ragone, start TJ over Walker, & bring up Pettway.

It might not win us many games, but it sure won't be any worse than what we've got right now.

I agree about the class act part, but now's the time for us to evaluate the talent on this team. If Capers refuses to do that, then firing Capers would be to the benefit of the club.

Oh they may be getting checks for awhile, but to me that is just another form
of severance pay. The problem is the uncertainty of employment security
hanging over their heads - now during the Holidays and into the new year.
And as far as Trade Unions representing protection, I would definitely take issue with that idea but discussing it is probably for another time, another place.

That is the exact same situation with the Lions.
Hell, they waited the entire Thanksgiving weekend until they fired. The Non-Class thing to do would be on Thanksgiving. Like it should have been.
What exactly was the non class thing about Mooch getting fired?

What? Because you like him? Mooch dug his own grave in Detroit. He refused to play the younger players on this team. He refused to give Kevin Jones carries. He refused to make adjustments to his offnese.

He has more talent on offense than most of the teams in the NFL, and has done everything he can to set us in a regression from the previous year.

The Lions owners might be clueless, pathetic, I wish they would die.
But they are classy.

And yet Mooch was able to post a 57-39 record as the coach of the 49ers.

Now let's see, what changed more...Mooch's coaching philosophy or the level of talent at his disposal?

Spare me the "more talent on offense than most teams" garbage. How many games has Charles Rogers been healthy/eligible for? How many games has Roy Williams (history of not being able to stay healthy since high school) played healthy? Why should so much be expected of Mike Williams (rookie WR) when 90% of rookie WRs don't make an impact?

Why does Kevin Jones have so few carries? Because you need to pass the ball when you're playing behind so often. Why are they behind so often? Because they lack talent across the board. Now who is responsible for aquiring that talent?

Was it Mooch's idea to draft Joey Harrington? Was it Mooch's idea to draft a WR in the first round for 3 consecutive years?

I do like Mooch but I am happy he was fired. Now he has the opportunity for something much better.

Spare you it? Spare me this Mooch ballwashing. The Lions offense is near the bottom of the NFL. And they damn sure got more talent on the field any given week than the EFFING CARDINALS.

Why does Kevin Jones have so few carries? Because you need to pass the ball when you're playing behind so often. Why are they behind so often? Because they lack talent across the board. Now who is responsible for aquiring that talent?
Kevn Jones had 35 carries, in the last 4 games combined.
The Lions are 3-0 when he gets 20 plus
The Lions have not stopped running the ball, they just stopped running Kevin Jones. His backup , Shawn Bryson, is one of the worst runners from the backfield I have ever seen. And they are pulling KJ to play Artose Pinner and Bryson. And when he is asked about it in press conferences. HE DOESn'T EVEN EXPLAIN IT!!!

Was it Mooch's idea to draft Joey Harrington? Was it Mooch's idea to draft a WR in the first round for 3 consecutive years?
Was Mooch off on vacation durring draft day?
It was Mooch's idea to take Jeff Garcia insted of Brad Johnson
Btw, how is Brad Johnson doing?

I do like Mooch but I am happy he was fired. Now he has the opportunity for something much better.
The fans who watch him are always glad to see him go.
Take from that what you will.
Mooch is a creation of the media.
If you want him on your team, I pity you.

Just be ready to see the backups playing insted of the starters. And no passing routes past the sticks.

Spare you it? Spare me this Mooch ballwashing. The Lions offense is near the bottom of the NFL. And they damn sure got more talent on the field any given week than the EFFING CARDINALS.
Um, no they don't (have more talent that the Cardinals).

Kurt Warner is a better QB than Harrington or Garcia.
Fitzgerald, Boldin, Johnson has been a better WR trio than Rogers, Williams, Williams.
Detroit has a better talent at RB but Arizona has a better offensive line that enables them to have a better running game.

Dispute that if you want but they're facts I doubt you're willing/able to admit.

Kevin Jones - 159 carries, 523 yards, 3.3 avg.
Shawn Bryson - 45 carries, 234 yards, 5.2 avg.

(Pinner has a higher avg than Jones as well)

Unfortunately for Mooch haters, his got the successful track record with teams not named Detroit and not under the guidance of Matt Millen that can back his claim of being a good coach. If it was just Mooch, explain how they weren't able to do jack before Mooch came on board.

Kurt Warner is a better QB than Harrington or Garcia.

I agree with you on that one.

Fitzgerald, Boldin, Johnson has been a better WR trio than Rogers, Williams, Williams.

This is debatable, I think both have a very talented trio of young WRs. I think Williams x2 and Rogers (if he could stay healthy) would put up very nice numbers in Arizona's system and with Warner at QB. Arizona's have been a much more productive trio of WR so far but I'm not sure they're necessarily better.

Detroit has a better talent at RB but Arizona has a better offensive line that enables them to have a better running game.

This one has some problems though. Arizona's line is terrible other than Leonard Davis. Detroit is only 25th in the NFL in rushing but Arizona is last in the NFL in rushing yards so they don't in any sense have a better running game than Detroit. I think Arrington can be a decent RB in this league but with Arizona's current OL and system he won't put up great numbers.

Fitzgerald, Boldin, Johnson:
458 catches, 5879 yards, 31 TDs

Williams, Rogers, Williams:
139 catches, 1925 yards, 17 TDs

End of debate.

Seriously though, I said the Arizona WRs "have been better" than Detroit's. And there's simply no questioning that. While I do agree that Detroit's have more potential, that potential doesn't do you much good if you're not on the field much.

Thanks for pointing that out. I only guessed Arizona had a better rushing game. I guess that really points out the difference in production from those WRs. ;)

No, Steve is a players coach and is soft on his players, which is good for a veteran team (which he had during his early success in SF), but not good for a young team. i.e. the lions and the texans. We need a coach with some attitude who doesn't tollerate any crap and will instill discipline in a team of under achievers.

NO.

No no no no no no no no no no no no no.

First, he's a terrible head coach, and we do not have the kind of personnel for the WCO anyway.

He's soft. He can't discipline his players, and there have got to be 50 guys more qualified to be a head coach than Mooch for the Texans.

I might as well stop being a Texans fan if they consider hiring him. We don't need to hire a guy who was just fired for not being able to win for squat. If he failed in Detroit, why would he succeed in Houston? Steve Mariucci isn't going to win us a Superbowl.
