View Full Version : Gamble on Joppru??

Its been what, 3 years? And cant make it to game one. Do you make your draft plans with him in the picture or not?

I think if you can get someone like Leonard Pope in the 2nd you might want to pull the trigger.

Or would you plan on Bennie coming back, and go with a guard, or some other need?

personally i dont think we have the luxury of drafting a TE this year. We need to fill soo many other holes before we worry about TE. Plus, next year Olsen will come out and solve everything for us at TE. JMO.

Bennie Joppru was a gamble from the very beginning. I was never a big fan of Joppru and I wanted the team to draft Jason Witten. And now with his injuries we cannot count on him ever being healthy and productive. We have to go on and draft a TE or sign one in FA.

Bennie was great in college, and looked like much more of a sure thing than Witten ever did.

I don't blame the pick, I thought he was good enough to be a 1st rounder he was that solid.

I think getting a TE should be one of our top off season priorities. We cannot go through another season without a TE that can block AND catch.

I tend to agree with drafting a TE with our 2nd, if Pope is on the board, and in the 3rd if the top 3 TE's are gone.

Simply put Bennie Jopru CAN NOT be considered in the Texans offseason plans . The MUST look for a TE in either the draft or via FA ... IF Benni happens to come back next season and be a productive HEALTHY player thats just an added bonus , like a free pick .

For those of you who think Leonard Pope will be around in the early to mid second round .... forget it . He will be an early to mid FIRST rounder IF he comes out . Too many teams are in need of a potential playmaker at the TE position to let a prospect with that much talent slip away .

There may be 3 TE's with first round talent. Marcedes Lewis (UCLA), Vernon Davis (Maryland), and the afforementioned Leonard Pope (Georgia). 3 TE's went in the first round of the 2002 draft, so it is possible.

And I figure the Texans should approach the offseason forgetting about Joppru, and get a TE in free agency or the draft and anything they do get from Bennie will be gravy.

Joppru can still come back next season, but we still need a solid TE otherwise. It would great to see Joppru and maybe a good 2nd-3rd round TE on our squad playing together. Bruener is basically used as a fullback in our system.

What TE do you think they should get in FA? Personally, I think that unless you feel you reakky need a player, you limit your free agent sinings, that along with a lot of high draft picks kill you cap situation... I really dont think there will be any good TE's available in FA, unless you have one in mind?

I have often wondered why we dont just bring in a tackle to play TE? We have thrown 8 passes to our TE's all year, what's the point of having them out there?:brickwall

We will look at Joppru like we do a street FA. He will be here to compete for a roster spot but we will not factor him into our search for a TE. He is pretty much already paid for so this 2006 season will be make the team sans injury or go home year.

I agree with you on this. I think TE is a need for us but not a real important one, although that all depends on our OC and offensive system next year, but I do think we have other more important issues to address first. I personally wouldn't take a TE above the fourth-fifth round this year with all the holes we need to fill, and I doubt we can find one that low in the draft that we should bother drafting. Plus Olsen will come out next year and if we still need one (if Joppru still can't come back, our current TEs can't produce, and we can't find a FA) then look to get Olsen. Isn't Randy McMichael a free agent this year?

even if he is, there are a few things stopping him from being a Texan:
1. He will be the top paid TE in free agency
2. He will most likely resign
3. Why would he come to a team that has a combined 8 catches between TE's?

True, I had forgotten about that issue with him. Still, I think we have so many other priorities to fill than getting a TE that can catch well (assuming Joppru can't play again next year because he is supposed to be good if he can, and I've heard he might be ready to play by the end of this year in case they want to put him out there for a few games). I think TE is about 4th-5th on our list of priorities and at that point in the draft I doubt any TE will be left that will be better than what we have, but if someone is left at our 5th-7th round picks then I have no problem with us taking one.

This is the same scenario as last year. The Texans have him on the PUP list rather than IR. At some point they could, as they did last year, start practicing him for some time period and would then have to either put him on the active roster or IR him. While it is very possible he may practice lightly, I would bet that same as last year he gets stuck on IR eventually.

Obviously no one knows at this point but I had heard earlier in the year that he was doing better and someone speculated he would be ready to play by the end of the year, but whether they bother to put him in for a game or two is another question. In a sense I can see them not playing him if he is ready since it won't really impact our team and let him rest up and recover for the offseason but at the same time I, and I'm sure most Texans fans, would like to see what he's capable of doing.

I tend to agree with drafting a TE with our 2nd, if Pope is on the board, and in the 3rd if the top 3 TE's are gone.
Pope, the Georgia TE, was awesome in the Auburn game ! I was too busy
with the game in general to specifically follow him and rate his blocking skills, but he was one of the leading offensive playmakers as a pass receiver and as such was outstanding. Hope he comes out, but he may be an underclassman?
What he could do for our offensive which is basically without a receiving TE !
He won't be cheap though - at the very least a late first rounder I'd think ?

Vinny is correct...the lack of a viable TE as been a big problem and a hole we have to fill this year. Lewis and Pope will be gone by the 2nd rd IMO, but I like Erik Gill-Pittsburgh or David Thomas/TX with one of our "3's"

I agree, a late first rounder. But you have to think we will have a top3 pick. Which in reality is almost a late first rounder.

When i say 2nd round, i mean the #33-#35 pick. Saying 2nd round pick, makes it sound alot further down.

Joppru dealt with injuries in college and he is dealing with them ever since.

What injuries were those? Joppru by every report I have seen had zero injury history in college. His problems in the NFL have been out of the blue.

Without mocking you, Mr. Draft, no, we do not. Joppru dealt with injuries in college and he is dealing with them ever since. Regardless of talent or potential, the fact is that some bodies just deteriorate faster than others, and some otherwise potentially bright careers are cut short by persistent injury. If he had been healthy and a viable part of the lineup, we might of course say differently looking back, but he was a risky injury liability before we drafted him and remains one three years later. Cut him.

Although I did not care for the pick (much preferred Jason Witten/Tenn), Joppru did not have a history of injuries when we took him and cutting him now really does not do much...we would not save much cap wise so we are already in on this one and might as well see if the kid can beat the odds and make a go of it IMO. BTW, that does not mean we should not take a TE in the '06 draft because we should...no way we can count on Joppru. Take a look at Erik Gill-Pitts or Jonathan Scott/Tx if you get the chance...they would be an upgrade for us and might still be on the board for one of our "3's" or maybe even a 4.

Joppru was an accomplished TE in college with no injury history. It wasn't a bad selection. It has just not worked out. That said, I think we have to assume he is not going to contribute next season and draft a TE in the 2nd or 3rd round. If we have two good TE's, it is a luxury.

(Note: Ironically, I typed almost this same exact thing prior to last year's draft)

IMO we should definetly look at upgrading our TE's this offseason. Why because just about anybody would be an upgrade. Any thing inbetween the second round and the fourth round would be an upgrade. Also you could look at FA to for an upgrade. Either way its a cheap and easy upgrade.

I'm not sure how many FA TEs there will be, we had posted that list a while ago but I hadn't looked thru it very thoroughly yet for my off-season recommendations, that is coming later. I do remember Randy McMichael from the Dolphins being on there so he could be a decent option if he is not re-signed. I don't want to see us draft a TE above the 4th round because I think we have bigger needs to fill, and I don't see a TE below that being an upgrade at all, so I would maybe look at TE in free agency but not in the draft, if we are going to get one I'd prefer to get one that has proven himself in the NFL already. I think Rivers is starting to play better and catching the ball when they throw it at him and he's getting to be a better blocker and playing with that mean streak, and I say give Joppru one more year since he is still under contract. If neither of them work out with our new offensive system then Olsen from Miami should be available in next year's draft.

There are also a lot of 2 TE formations where having 2 good ones would be a benefit. It is definitely one of the most underrated positions on the field, and it a blaring weakness of our team. If we have a good TE, we can make teams pay for running a Cover 2 defense against us.

Some injuries never go away. Anytime you have a major injury you stand a good chance of carrying that injury with you the rest of your life. The injured area becomes a weak spot like your Achilles' heel. Ask Tony Boselli and Jeff Bagwell about their shoulders.

I'm not a big fan of drafting a TE unless there's a decent one available in the 4th round or later. I think we have other bigger needs to fill before getting a TE, like 2+ OL, a CB/S, and a DE if we switch to a 4-3, and I'm not sure we'll find an upgrade that late in the draft. I say give Joppru one more chance next year since he will still be under contract and see if he can become the TE he was supposed to be, and I think Rivers has stepped up as a decent TE although we haven't used him very well. He has pretty good hands and is fairly athletic and is developing a mean streak, although he needs to improve his route-running a little but I think if we used him more he can become a good TE, and Bruener is still one of if not the best blocking TEs in the game. If we are going to look for a TE, I'd prefer to try to find one in free agency that has proven he can play on the NFL level rather than another project like Joppru, but other than Randy McMichael I don't know who is supposed to be available, but I plan on posting a more in-depth free agent list in a week or two. If our current TEs can't hack it in our new system next year then look at Olsen from Miami in next year's draft.

Notre Dame junior TE Anthony Fasano is reportedly approaching next week’s Fiesta Bowl as if it might be his last game with the Irish. Fasano still has a year of eligibility remaining, but he's seriously thinking about entering the NFL draft. The 6-4, 257-pound Fasano emerged this fall as one of the premirer pass-receiving TEs in college football as he hauled in 45 catches for 564 yards making him one of three finalists for the John Mackey Award, which is given each year to an outstanding tight end. Fasano reportedly will talk with Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis after next week’s game with Ohio State before he makes his decision, but in interviews Weis sounded like he would recommend that Fasano go to the NFL if he was ready for the pros which it sounds like Weis thinks he is. Underclassmen have until January 15th to file papers with the NFL to be eligible for the 2006 draft. GBN-

He has been impressive in the games I've seen him play, actually reminds me somewhat of Witten & if Weis says he's ready thats a easy call. this just might be the sort of thing that if the Texans have the #1 pick they trade for more picks to fill some of these gapping holes like TE. It would probably take a mid 2nd rd pick to secure his services but it might be something to take a look at. http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/17/170046.jpg

Considering the Cover 2 problem we have, I'm OK with taking a TE in the first round (not a top 5 pick, mind you), but I'd still rather focus on the five guys next to him, especially OT and center.

On 610, earlier this week, they were discussing Bennie. They said he was coming along well in his recovery and was looking good. He has been spending a lot of time in the weight room - they described him as being "ripped".

One problem - he has lost a LOT of weight. One said he looked liked he weighed only 180 pounds. The other said looks were deceiving, and that he was probably in the low 200's. They would ask the next time they spoke with him.

Bennie was injury free throughout high school and college. He's had a three year run of extemely bad luck, but he is very motivated to make a comeback and prove his selection was not a bust. But having said this, he will probably not recover his full potential before the 2007 season - he will need a full season playing his way back to top form. Being lighter, and quicker, his receiving skills will be the first to make an impact. His blocking skills will only come with a return to his heavier playing weight.

We should not expect too much, too soon.
