View Full Version : Good Article from PFW

Here is an article I enjoyed on the PFW website. I like the way the writer says it's time to stop giving the Texans a pass and puts the spotlight on Casserly for his poor efforts at building the roster.

I think once you take off the blinders, you can start to see all of the mistakes that were made. In the beginning we were just so happy to have football back we trusted these men to make the right decisions and just figured it would take time to come together. I think most of what was said in that article was right on the money. PBurnt has been ridiculously bad, Babin is soft and made Capers look really bad when he compared him to Kevin Greene because he couldnt be more different. The Tony Hollings pick was such a reach it wasnt even funny, a second round choice on a guy with 4 collegiate games a RB? Anyway, nothing Im saying hasnt been said 1000 times over the past 2 weeks, I just took a little longer than others to come around. :homer: < me

Good article, and pretty much sums up the consensus of many of the more intelligent posters on this forum.

Some of the questions he asks should be put forth by our local media:

"If Capers was disenchanted enough to send Palmer packing after two games, why wasn’t he compelled to make a change after last season?"

This is a really good question, and one that still has me puzzled. How often does a coordinator get fired two games into a season? It has the feel of desperation (something that reminds me of the Oilers).

"All of this makes life difficult on Carr, who has thrown eight touchdown passes in his last 11 starts. He has been sacked 46 times in this span.
"And if you’re cynical, perhaps you believe Capers is sending a message to Casserly, who traded six draft picks in deals involving Babin and Buchanon.

Why wasn't our offense our primary concern after the past three years of really bad protection? Six draft picks for two guys that had major questions seems like a lack of focus.

I've also been told that we are 8 million under the cap, but I haven't confirmed this information.

It seems like the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing in this organization, and winners hardly ever emerge from that kind of conflict.

Who is still giving this team a free pass? The team isn't making excuses. Obviously the team was going to be in for a rough ride the first couple seasons, but the fact that they kept improving made people want to stay on track. Things are obviously not going the way we all hoped at this point, but I'm sick of hearing one person spout off "The Texans are an expansion team and MIGHT make the playoffs in 10 years" to the next one saying "The Texans need to quit using the expansion excuse and start competing for the playoffs". The fact is the team has never used that as an excuse to lose. It's the clueless media stuck 2 years in the past and outside fans that don't know much more than maybe Carr, Johnson, and Davis's names and positions.

Casserly needs to take some blame in this matter. As it is now, We have an undrafted free agent in Orr starting for our 1st rounder Babin, We have a 6th or 7th rounder in Faggins starting for another 1st rounder in Buchanon, who we gave up a 2nd and 3rd for. I'm sure Peek is looking over hi shoulder at Charlie Anderson, a 6th rounder I believe. Offensively, we have a 4th rounder starting over a 2nd rounder in Hollings. The guy with the best hands as of now is Derrick Armstrong, an undrafted free agent. Our 2nd rounder, Gaffney gets hit in the arm on passes and can't catch the ball. Not saying Casserly has to be perfect, but we need some better players on the roster.

I got ripped by a guy on here for me saying, "Why is Capers making these bold moves now and not way back when...." during the firings of Palmer and the benching of Babin and P-Burnt.

he said all I do is b***h etc. etc.

My very first thought when I read the article about Palmer, and then the article about the benchings, was "So Capers waits until now to do something that he (Capers) says he "felt needed to be done for sometime" or some response like that."

I mean, why after the Cleveland game do you (A) get your QB and go have a "sit down" meeting with Palmer...which we all know communicated that Capers and Carr were NOT happy with Palmer's playcalling or schemes, and then why does Capers (B) not bench some guys like Babin and P-Burnt during the preseason games, and why didn't we fire Palmer DURING the preseason when we would still have had two or three weeks to get the new OC started before the reg season opener, and why does Capers not (C) bench those guys DURING the Bills game and call up to the luxury box and ask McNair if it's OK to fire Palmer at half-time of that game, as well?

I believe in being level-headed, but if Capers truly was waiting for things to just hit rock bottom...then that's not exactly something I'm comfortable with.

These star players have a low shelf life in the NFL, and there's not much room for error when you play a 16-game season...especially in the AFC right now. So for Dom to wait THIS long to do things he says he knew he probably needed to do....it just irritates me.

And then people come on here and rah-rah it and say "Well, it looks like Capers is really shaking things up now...can't wait to see the team take on new life....etc."

New life will not happen until Capers is gone. Forget all the o line woes, the Qb woes, the defensive woes. This is a coach leadership issue. Period.

From what I'm reading, Palmer gave the QB and the WRs, RBs and TEs free passes while Pendry ate **** on the o linemen ALL THE TIME. Man, if I'm blocking for a bunch of guys that never get chewed out for their mistakes...then I have a hard time feeling sorry for the QB getting pancaked or the WRs getting rib shots from DBs due to bad passes, etc. I actually begin to giggle a little and think it's some sort of cruel justice or something.

Sounds like Pendry is operating from a few years of seeing LOW accountability amongst the QB/WR/RB/TE and Palmer.

Notice Pendry's comments about how "...we've got good eyes in the booth already. I'm staying on the field."

No talking on the phone for Carr when he makes a bonehead play. He's going to have a real face in HIS face eating it off when he does that stuff.

I had a hard time believing the Pendry promotion would do anything positive, but the more I think about it, and the from what I read on practices, it might just work. A little.

thanks for pointing this article out- the guy wilkering has talent.

by the way, when it became obvious last year that teams could smash the ball down the texans' throat, and the team's toughness was getting worse, not better, lots of people made the "expansion team" excuse.

nobody could deny parcells took over a worse situation than the texans were at the time. the fact they have passed the texans in every facet is going to make it that much harder for the buffet-line hacks at the chronicle to keep coming up with excuses.

:tomato: Why make excuses , I think the Texans brass and coaches took chances and it did'nt work . Should they be held accountable... of course .

At this point its being reactive pointing out flaws and failures . To be proactive I think you start finding out who can play . If young guys like Wand, ,PBuch, Babin , Carr ,etc. can't play for a bad team then they can't play at all. That was supposed to be the future .

Carr is close to being threw here because of the sack problem . If its Carr's fault sit his butt down , if its a line fault sit them . This is going to end like Steve Francis... 5yrs into his career and still calling him a young player .

' if Capers truly was waiting for things to just hit rock bottom...'

There are different types of management styles and Capers falls into the group that ignores warning signs of problems and only makes changes when 'everything blows up in his face.' Then, that type of mgr tries putting 'band aids' on everything thats not working and hopes the problems are solved.

The successful mgr senses when things are not right and makes simpler changes before everything gets out of hand....many posters on this board long ago 'sensed' their were problems and even identified them (imagine if these problems had already been corrected) and suggested solutions. But,
as we know, these posters were called every name in the book and were pretty much told if they didn't like the way things were done--'get out of Dodge.'

Now, we can only hope that-not only does Capers have some 'bandages', but he has some idea of where to place them.

:texflag: u know i dont have the internet anymore since i have moved but i am ASHAMED to think yall "are" Texans fans. First 2 weeks of the season we play the no. 1 and no. 2 ranked defenses in the league. And NOW all of the sudden Casserly and Capers "whom so many of yall thought were so great a few weeks before the season started", just dont seem to know what they are doing. I dont know about the rest of you but i STILL love watching this team play. I wake up on sunday morning way to early, i sit and watch the clock counting the minutes until kick off. I get antsy, nervious. It freaks my Girlfriend out bad i get on sundays. And Now i come on here and deal with this ****. I tell ya what if we win the the next 4 games in a row, so many of you will praise Capers and Casserly for making good decesions. If i had any free internet space i would start my own TRUE fans site. This is just how we started last season and we had a decent season last year, we arent out of it yet. U know we actually have a good schedule to help us make a play-off run. Call me a homer or what you will but thats just the way i see things !!!!! :texflag:

OK, your a HOMER, but ya know what.....it's OK to be one. Lord knows we have a surpluse of the Negative Nellies and Chicken Littles to be able to off set a homer or two.
