Let's look at the newcomers on defense for now...

Morlon Greenwood - High dollar free agent that has gone 2 out of 3 games without recording a single tackle or assist. Has not been the playmaker that was advertised.

Phillip Buchanon - Hasn't given up any big plays and has not made any big plays. Looked terrible returning punts.

Lewis Sanders - Virtually invisible unless he's making mistakes.

Travis Johnson - More penalties than tackles this preseason.

The best free agent on the defensive side of the ball has been Frank Chamberlin and this guy probably won't even make the team.

CC has played very well. Only 1 tackle in the last game though. SS in a 3-4 are counted on to make a lot of tackles.

Walker has been with the team since 2002. He'll make the team over Sanders with special teams ability.

Morlon Greenwood - I guess he has a good agent.

Phillip Buchanon - Was rumored to make big plays, both positive and negative. Neither is true. On punts, runs really fast--right into the first available defender.

Lewis Sanders - Way too much limelight, except when he's not screwing up.

Travis Johnson - We wanted aggression. What can we say?

Who is Frank Chamberlain?

I want to say something to put a positive spin on this, but I can't think of anything right now. :brickwall

Oh, we can score on kickoffs. :)

He has more tackles than all of the guys mentioned above... combined.

Reggie Swinton has shown some worth atleast. I don't really know why he didn't make the list over Lewis Sanders.

He's considered an offensive player.

And he's probably been the best player on the entire team this preseason.

Why is everone expecting the new players to play like pro bowlers in the preseason when it doesn't matter and when the coaches use an ultra watered down playbook. When we drafted TJ we all knew that in our system he wouldn't be putting up huge numbers, but all of a sudden he is suppose to be the next Richard Seymor. CHILL OUT!

Frank Chamberlain is no joke. He was a titan for a few years. It's hilarious that the colts keep whining about having no MLB, and he's probably better than anything they have. Guy is a step slow but he is a tackling machine.

Sounds like a cheaper Jamie Sharper.

I know pbuc got burned in one game, but we were holding too much on punt returns or he would have real nice average right now. He is still getting comfortable with his ne team.

TJ is a rookie. He will learn soon enough.

Maybe the reason Greenwood is not getting tackles is that the opposing team would rather run against Wong and Babin than Peek and Greenwood. Just a theory.

Lewis Sanders. You may be right about his play. The real question I have is the relevance of bringing up his name. Is he going to getting alot of playing time. He might be our 4th or 5th CB. I sure hope we don't here alot about him, because that would mean one of our better players is hurt.

I will reserve judgement on the individual play one the season starts.

F-minus67, nobody is expecting these guys to play like pro bowlers but they should be expected to show something. They are high-profile players paid to produce. Is it too much to ask for them to show something... anything?

bigtexan8, nobody has "freaked out", merely pointed out that these guys have underperformed so far. Search the post thouroughly and you'll find that "we're not that good" and/or "we should have drafted someone else" simple puke remarks are not part of its contents.

Sometimes the truth hurts fellas. It's just a game. Don't take your anger out on people who point out things that the players/coaches/front office are not doing right.

As far as making half-intelligent or moronic statements goes... you may want to proofread your posts before submitting.

Can we make it to at least one game (real) before we start evaluating these folks this way. Pre-season is a practice game only. We used to call practice games scrimmages... that means.. who cares... Now when a real games start.. so will they.

fickle fans :worm: every team has em.

OK Carr had a bad game, its pre season I really thought Murphy was stepping up to be the starting TE, that INT was his fault not Carr's but he gets tagged. the blocking scheme seems to be better :thumbup but Carr still lacks targets teams still can focus on AJ & until the TE can step up and integrate into the offense the Texans will be forced to run the ball. Its time to focus on winning games instead of individual numbers. teams will stack the box to force the Texans to throw, Palmer has to develop more picks & screens underneath to attack seams, throw in the proverbial bomb to Mathis or Bradford once or twice & hope the defense plays as a cohesive unit.

That being said pre-season is for developing conditioning, working on your foundation and evaulate rookies & free agents. its fair to say the draft class is average not great and the free agents are about the same, but they have added some much needed depth & hopefully injurys will not be a huge factor any longer. the cap structure is in place and all our key players are signed. as the Texans head into the regular season they are average at best, but this year if the talent develops they have a chance to be better than that. :texans:

Couldnt have said it better. The 3-4 dline is supose to tie up blockers, which hes been doing pretty good. And Morency gives us a spell RB with big play potential if he will learn to not run strait for the sideline.

I don't think that anyone we signned this offseason was high-profile. I pretty sure most people didn't even know who Greenwood was before we signned him, PB was the other CB in Oakland, I'm still not sure who Lewis Sanders is and TJ was a 1st round pick and since he was drafted by the texans he got no real national media coverage.

To all you mullets who are freaking out...you are no longer allowed to post till the season starts. I, and the majority of half-intelligent posters don't want your whiny, "we're not that good," "we should have drafted someone else" simple puke remarks.
Look, p-buch has always been each end of the spectrum CB. He'll make himself look real good, or real bad, but he has only given up one big play this preseason. Greenwood has played in the 3-4 defense how long...not that long. We will stink the first couple weeks, but after the D has played together for a while, then it will happen. And hell, the D has played pretty decent. Stopped 5 times in a row on 3rd down.
Please mullets...just wait till at least the end of week 1 to start your moronic statements.
And by the way...GO TEXANS!!! :texflag:

...sorry, guess some folks-oh,sorry, it's mullets now-thought this was a

Greenwood was the team's biggest free agent acquisition of the offseason. That would make him high-profile here.

We gave up 2 high draft picks for Buchanon. That would qualify him as high-profile as well.

Lewis Sanders was a free agent that played for Cleveland last year.

TJ was a top 20 pick, and by default, is expected to produce.

...its fair to say the draft class is average not great...
I don't think that's fair at all.

TJ has shown a lot of energy and is pushing guys like Walker & Smith to play their best. They got the message that was sent on draft day.

Morency is not a complete back yet, but he runs very hard. His running style reminds me of Dorsey Levens in his early years with the Pack.

Mathis is one of the fastest players in the league. And he's shown to be very coachable thus far. Look how far Jerome has come as a punt returner. He'll contribute this year as a returner & a WR. Plus, he's got 1st round type potential.

C.C Brown is a player. You shouldn't get a player with his ability in the 6th round. He's made mistakes, but he's made them running. I think Brown will contribute both as a safety and special teamer this season. I think Brown has Bubba McDowell type potential as a safety and could become the best player out of this draft for the Texans.

Hodgdon & Pettway have flashed some talent and are good prospects for the practice squad. A year on the squad has been very valuable to Sloan Thomas.

The Texans will get contributions at need positions from 4 players this season. And these guys have a ton of upside. This looks like a good draft now, and could be even better in 3 years. When you consider the lack of top talent & depth of this draft, the fact the Texans didn't have a 2nd round pick, and that they weren't picking in the top 10 as before, I think this was as a good a draft as they could have hoped for.
