The Jacksonville Jaguars today released seventh-year veteran wide receiver Troy Edwards.

Edwards, 28, was the Jaguars second-leading receiver in 2004 with 50 receptions for 533 yards and one touchdown while playing in all 16 games. The 5-10, 195-pound wide receiver originally signed with Jacksonville on September 23, 2003. Edwards started 15 of 29 games with the Jaguars totaling 85 receptions for 1,020 yards and four touchdowns.

The Jaguars' roster now stands at 78 players, and the team has until 4:00 p.m. Tuesday to get down to the 65-man roster limit. At this time they also have six NFL Europe roster exemptions. The deadline for final cuts to 53 is Saturday, Sept. 3.

So the Jags release their 2nd leading WR from last season and are left with 40 yeard old Jimmy Smith, first round pick pick Reggie Williams who IMO is a bust, and former QB Matt Jones who is playing WR now...doesn't make sense to me...

Its easy.... hes not really consistant and IMO Chad Owens is already a better WR then him. He wont be really missed.

We had a heck of a list of guys on the WR list. It came down to who would perform in the preseason...and Troy didn't. We are still strong with what we've got. Either way we were going to have to get rid of a talented WR. :respect:

Word out of Jacksonville is that Edwards could end up becoming a titan soon...

The Titans yesterday expressed an interest in former Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Troy Edwards, and the player's agent said last night he's hopeful a deal could be reached with the team soon.

Edwards was released by the Jaguars yesterday. He was the team's second-leading receiver last season.

General Manager Floyd Reese called agent Richard De Luca yesterday and they are scheduled to talk again this morning.

The Titans have gotten impressive play from rookies Brandon Jones, Courtney Roby and Roydell Williams this preseason, but have also been eyeing an experienced NFL receiver to go with veterans Drew Bennett and Tyrone Calico.

De Luca said a number of other teams also called him yesterday about Edwards, but Tennessee was at the top of his list.

"Hopefully he'll be on a plane for Nashville (today) and be at practice on Tuesday and then play in the final preseason game," De Luca said. "Earlier I told Troy to make a list of the top places he'd like to play and Tennessee was one of the top two. To get a call from Floyd was a pleasant surprise. I think it's a perfect fit for him."

De Luca would not name the other team at the top of the list, but said it had not called as of last night. Two Titans officials said yesterday they were interested in Edwards. As of last night De Luca had not talked about a contract with Reese, but said he thought that would happen today.

Edwards caught 50 passes for 533 yards last season. A first-round choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1999, he has also played for the St. Louis Rams (2002). He signed with Jacksonville in 2003 season and played in 29 games, starting 15.
