Despite pain that he has termed "excruciating," and the need for a fifth surgery in little more than a year to address chronic abdominal and hip injuries, Minnesota Vikings center Matt Birk is willing to try to play the 2005 season with the aid of painkillers.

But only if the Vikings grant the four-time Pro Bowl performer guarantees that he will be a part of the organization's plans beyond this year.

Agent: Vikings turn down offer, Birk ready to schedule surgery

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Minnesota Vikings center Matt Birk could miss three months because of hip surgery after the Vikings declined to guarantee his contract for 2006.

Joe Linta, the player's agent said Thursday, that Birk will have the surgery on his left hip.

Birk had been cleared to play with painkilling injections, but asked the Vikings to guarantee his nearly $4 million salary for 2006 in exchange for him taking a risk and playing with the pain.

I have mixed feelings about the whole situation.. I mean teams cut players when they have no use for them. I often wonder how "insurance" comes into play with sports and high profile clients and if teams protect themselves in case a player gets a career ending injury if the insurance helps pay for whatever is guaranteed (signing bonus)

They do injure their contracts. They don't usually pay for injury settlements.
