We are getting to cut time.

Who stays and who goes..

Let say we only get to keep 5 WR's and 6 LB's

Who goes and who stays.. your oponion

WRs- AJ, Mathis, Gaffney, Alexander, SThomas, Starling... It has to be 6 this year! I think Bradford is gone because of all the talented depth. Starling is too good on STeams and has too much potential to be cut. And, I just have a feeling about SThomas.

LBs- Peek, Babin, Wong, Greenwood, CAnderson, SOrr, Pettway, Evans... it has to be 7 or 8. Orr and Anderson are too value in STeams and both have shown big play ability in game situations.

CUT- T Hollings- doesn't run strong and we have depth there. Morency has a ton of ability and Wells is very servicable as well as being cheaper and better on STeams.

Rofl... No.. they question is 5 WR and 6 LB's which is probably what they will HAVE to come down to unless they release depth elsewhere..

Assuming that is the cut.. who do you have to cut, but dont wanna..

I dont see us keeping only 6 LBs in a 3-4 defense. that is two starters and one backup at each position. Gotta take 8 LBs imo.

as for 5 WRs.. with our depth there..and need for a return guy.. I see us splurging and taking 6 WRs.. and making wells our second string fullback, and releasing Baxter, to make room.

WR: Johnson, Bradford, Amrstrong, Gaffney, Swinton, Mathis
LB: Peek, Babin, Greenwood, Wong, Anderson, Polk, Orr, Pettway

okay, okay... I'd cut SThomas and go with AJ, Gaffney, Armstrong, Mathis, Starling.

However, I don't think they could ever only keep 6 LBs in a 3-4. but, it's your thread: Greenwood, Wong, Peek, Babin, CAnderson, Polk

WR- Who is Alexander, I'm guessing you mean Armstrong. Agree with your list and add Swinton, since Starling will be more of a ST than a WR (maybe they should work him at DB like Brown for New England last year).

LB- You forgot Moreno (he will make the team), don't know about Pettway, and if Evans plays like tonight again, Chamberlin will take his spot.

As for T. Hollings I think you hit the nail right on the head.

Derrick Alexander had some good years with KC, though. Sorry, I meant Armstrong.

I think Swinton made the team tonight. Morrency replaced Hollings and might have replaced Wells as DD's backup. Hollings has 2 games to show his stuff, or he's gonna be gone. I think Anderson solidified his spot as backup OLB.

For the receivers:

I thought it would be easy to name the 5, but then Sloan Thomas has to go play like a veteran, doesn't he?

Ah well. I'd keep AJ, Bradford, Gaffney, Armstrong, and Mathis.

Linebackers:

Wong, Peek, Greenwood, Babin, Anderson, and . . . . . . Pettway.

I am hoping/praying like you both said we have 7 or 8 LB's and 6 WR, but you cant ever tell.. I hope you are right..

Now.. my quick question.

Can you see us with our depth at WR putting Mathis (the only WR allowed on the PS) on the practice squad. I only say this because of the depth we have there and a year of practice would help him. If there is ANY way another team can sign him (i dont know the rules of the PS), there is NO way we would/should do it. Just wondering. I ONLY say this because of our depth here..

In order to be put on the PS I think Mathis would have to clear waivers first. Another team can sign him, but I believe he has to be on their active roster. I think Mathis makes the cut.

There were 6 WR's on the roster last year, and there will be at least that many this year. Saying that, my 6 are; AJ, Bradford, Gaffney, Armstrong, Starling, and Mathis.

If we only kept 6 LB's, that would be 2 backups for 4 positions...not gonna happen. Wong, Peek, Greenwood, and Babin are locks unless something drastic happens. If there were only 2 backups for those 4 positions, IMHO, one of them would have to be Shantee Orr since he can play both ILB and OLB. The last one would have to be someone that could fill in either position also. I don't see Charlie Anderson not making the team, as well as a few others, so I don't see any way that we only keep 6 LB's.

Like they said on the air tonight, a couple of WR's that we cut could and probably will wind up playing for someone else. It is going to be a tough desicion, I hope they make the right ones (sure would hate to see Thomas burn us in years to come if he is the one cut).

WR- Andre Johnson, Jabar Gaffney, Corey Bradford, Reggie Swinton & Jerome Mathis. there could be one more between Kendrick Starling, Sloan Thomas and Derick Armstrong too early to tell

LB- Jason Babin, Kailee Wong, Morlon Greenwood, Antwan Peek, Charlie Anderson, Shantee Orr. after that its a dog fight for the last two openings between DaShon Polk, Quincy Monk, Frank Chamberlin & Troy Evans. looks like Pettway goes practice squad, but I need to see more of him :tv:

A practice squad player is a free agent and can be signed by another team if the team places the player on the ACTIVE roster. I am not sure if the original team has the right to match the offer or not; however...

Joel Myers asked this question to Charley Casserly during the game and almost got laughed out of the booth. Casserly basically said Mathis will make the team. He will not be on the practice squad. :pigfly:

He was the one who put the thought into my brain, true enough. Only rookies to the team are allowed this right?

My picks for WR are (AJ of course, Gaff, bradford, Armsrtong, Swinton, and Mathis

The LBs should be (Wong, Greenwood, Badin, Peek, Anderson, Evans,)

RBS (DD, Vern, Wells)

Say goodbye to Hollings, Starling,
and regretfully to Slone Thomas and Kasper The Friendly Receiver

maybe we keep 7 WRs this year. I say this because its possible one of our FBs will be expendable if Wells proves he can play FB too. Just a thought though, i'd still bet they go with 6. AJ, Gaff, Bradford, Mathis, Swinton, Armstrong. now if they add a 7th it's gonna be between Starling, Thomas, and Kasper. guess we'll have to wait and see.

Are Starling and Thomas eligible for practice squad?

I completely disagree with those of you that believe Hollings will be waived. He's finally healed, & has been running much stronger. Even though he hasn't put up big numbers, he's just got too much potential to just release him. I could see him being showcased in the last 2 preseason games in order to trade him. I agree with Grid's post about Wells filling both the backup FB/RB positions.

I can see some notable players like Billy Miller, Bradford, Hollings, Ramon Walker, Weary, & Orr losing their jobs this year. Hopefully, CC can trade one or two of them for draft picks or an upgrade at one of our other positions. I'd sure hate to be the coaches & have to decide which ones to cut. We're actually going to be able to cut some quality players this year.

Our secondary should be the envy of the league this year.

Anyway, here's my picks, based on just 2 preseason games.

So you leave out the guy with the best hands in Armstrong? I wish Thomas luck, and he's a very talented receiver but I don't see how he makes the final roster with the quality of the guys ahead of him.

If we keep 6 WRs I think it will shake out like this:
AJ
Gaff
Armstrong
Mathis
Swinton
Bradford

There will be a couple quality WRs looking for new jobs when the final cuts come around.

If we are to judge the available talent from the 2 preseason games then I would have to give the job to Thomas over Bradford and Armstrong seeing that they have either had no catches or very few.

Bradford has yet to impress me in the previous few seasons. He was suppose to be able to stretch the field but has yet to produce on the field on any regular basis.

Thomas not only has good hands but also has the ability to get the YAC which allot of the catch and fall receivers are unable to.

Why is everyone so high on Jabar Gaffney? He would be the guy I would leave out of the mix.

To me it comes down to Gaff and Armstrong. Because of Armstrongs hands, he seems like a better fit for this new offense.

Armstrong played very well for us last season. He hasn't seen alot of action in the preseason, and was held out of the Raiders game. He's shown his ability during the regular season, and I think that gives him a leg up over Thomas.

But preseason is used to determine who will be on the team. The non-locked starting position and backup jobs are still up for grabs. Armstrong did have a good season last year, but he was one of the best of a mediocre receiving corp.

That’s exactly why JJ, Sharper, and Foreman are no longer with us. They all had a good year, but it was a good year on a bad team.

From ProFootballWeekly (http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/The+Way+We+Hear+It/default.htm?mode=afcsouth)

The way we hear it, expect Corey Bradford to open the season as the starting wideout opposite Andre Johnson. A source close to the team says Bradford has had his best training camp ever with the team. Bradford’s speed has always been his greatest asset, but he still must prove he can be more than just a downfield threat. Jabar Gaffney will likely start the season as the No. 3 wideout if he can quickly return to form after being sidelined by a shoulder injury. Lanky Derick Armstrong, who lacks Bradford’s speed and Gaffney’s quickness but has good hands and a knack for making plays, likely fits in as the No. 4 receiver.

It is good that there is an increase in quality that we can talk like this. I think several players from last year will be gone. I can see Miller, a full back, Hollings and maybe Bradford gone. I love Cory but he has yet to show me much this preseason and this is supposed to be the best for him ever? Something is up that he didn't get to many looks last season.

cdastros
08-22-2005, 04:02 PM
Because he's our second best receiver.

Recievers in an offense that requires a 3 step drop, are going to have to catch balls in coverage a lot more. Thats why I am not so high on Gaff. He doesn't seem to run good routes, and his hands are not as good as Armstrong. He has had three years to prove that he is something more than a solid 3rd down reciever. I have not seen him prove otherwise.

texasguy346
08-22-2005, 04:51 PM
But preseason is used to determine who will be on the team. The non-locked starting position and backup jobs are still up for grabs.
What has Sloan Thomas showed you in two preseason games that trumps everything Armstrong has showed you in both regular and pre season? Other than a couple of nice catches against the opposing teams 2nd and 3rd stringers he hasn't done much. He isn't the gunner that a Starling or even a Kasper is, and he definately doesn't have hands like Armstrong. IMO Kasper has a better shot of making the roster than Sloan due to his versatility as a gunner/returner on ST. Again Armstrong has shown the ability to play on this level against 1st team defenses, and Thomas hasn't. As far as JJ goes he was cut because he was just a KR and Dom has shown that he loves players who can contribute in more than one phase of the game. Sharper isn't a very good analogy since he had a much heftier cap hit than Armstrong. Foreman just wasn't good period. He got blown up in coverage, and there was no secret that he was going to be looking for a job elsewhere.

Thats why I am not so high on Gaff. He doesn't seem to run good routes, and his hands are not as good as Armstrong.

Gaff's route running is one of his strengths. His speed is often seen as his biggest weakness, but keep in mind he had the longest catch last year of all the receivers. His hands are right up there with Armstrong's, and at worst he's got the second best hands on the team. Considering that Armstrong's hands are like velcro its not a bad thing for him to be second to him. He is an ideal receiver to move the chains and keep the offense on the field doing its job. You can't always throw it to AJ and Bradford is hot/cold. Gaffney knows how to get open when it matters the most, and he knows how to find the soft spot in a zone and settle in.

I swear I bet tomorrow I'll see someone wanting to cut DD or Norris in this thread.

He did put up a nice performance in crunch time, but its not like he was going against the 1st team defense...I also like what I saw and he showed lots of potential there, but every dog has their day...I'd like to see him do it on a consistent basis (I don't know how he's been looking in practice), thankfully we have two more games to evaluate the players :tv: .

Texans obviously have alot of depth and talent at the WR position...I'd say they have to go with 6 WR this year and that whoever gets cut signs with another team and becomes a legitimate contributor to their offense (Sloan Thomas) possibly and Starling hasn't shown me anything other than ST...he's gotta step up within these next two preseason games.

I'm a big fan of Kevin Kasper. He brings the intangibles (toughness, big play ability, leadership) that we are sorely missing at the WR slot besides Andre. I think his return abilities and his craftiness at WR make him a deserving roster candidate. Good luck Kevin, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!!!
