Full statement RE: David Quessenberry (http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1s237vi)
It is with a heavy heart that we must announce that a member of our REP 1 Family has been diagnosed with Lymphoma. Houston Texans 23-year-old offensive lineman, David Quessenberry, will be leaving the game for an extended period of time while he undergoes treatment for Non-Hodgkins T Lymphoblastic Lymphoma.

David was diagnosed with the illness last Tuesday. He believed he had been suffering from a chest cold when he experienced shortness of breath at a Texans practice on June 3rd. David was admitted to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston later that day, where he immediately began treatment that evening.

The goal of David's treatment is to cure the disease, so he can return to the life that he has worked so hard to earn. David is extremely positive and determined to win this fight against cancer. Our love for David is strong and we are praying for him and his family during this difficult time. All of your positive thoughts and prayers for David are encouraged and appreciated.

As bad as the news is for the team, it is worse for the man and his family. May the Lord help him recover.

Head coach Bill O’Brien wasn’t scheduled to speak to the media on Tuesday but did to make this statement.

“Over the last few days we learned of David Quessenberry’s diagnosis with lymphoma. And we just want everybody to know, most especially David Quessenberry, that we’re very much in David Quessenberry’s corner. The one thing that’s really stood out to me personally in our coaching staff, we’ve been over there to visit him, is what an impressive young man this guy is. He’s a guy that wanted his team to know right away, his teammates to know he was going to fight this thing and he was going to beat it. And we’re all behind him and we know that he’s going to do that.

“He’s at the best medical facility, cancer facility, for what he has, over there at MD Anderson and they’ve been great with him. And just, again, from our staff and our team to David and his family: We’re all in his corner and we look forward to the day that he beats it and he returns to the Houston Texans.”

I have discovered that Quessenberry has been diagnosed specifically with T-cell lymphoblastic non-hodgkins lymphoma. T-cell as opposed to B-cell is quite uncommon (15% / 85% ratio), and T-cell generally carries a significantly poorer prognosis. The lymphoblastic variety makes up only 2%. In most cases, lymphoblastic lymphoma progresses to Stage IV prior to diagnosis. Tumors in this stage have spread to the bone marrow, spleen, and central nervous system. Chemotherapy, with or without radiation therapy, is the classic therapy, but bone marrow transplants have shown great response in appropriate cases, especially in cases of first time recurrences. As long as the disease is caught before significant bone marrow involvement is present, with intensive therapy, this particular T-cell variant the Quess has can sometimes be cured or placed in long term remission (~50%), even in stage 4.

Not knowing his disease's exact extent of involvement, I join in wishing Quess a complete recovery and a return to the Texans following his lengthy intensive treatments, and an adequate post-treatment rest and significant "rebuild" period.

Folks this does not sound good especially with him saying chest cold symptoms which could mean metastases to lungs/stomach. This is the type cancer my younger brother died of 1998. Mike thought it was a sore throat & put off going to doctor until I got involved. Diagnosed in February, dies in August as it advanced very quickly. Hopefully treatment has advanced as chemo offered little for my brother. His last couple months were terrible.

This is terrible news indeed and Non-Hodgkin's T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma doesn't have a good prognosis as CnD mentioned. But I can tell you as someone who has worked at Anderson: it's the place to be if you have cancer. It's all cancer all day everyday from basic research to translational medicine. It's going to be a tough battle but with Anderson's experts and Quessenberry's strength I hope he'll come out victorious.

I hate even thinking or talking about cancer. So I hate saying this, but even when he kicks it, he's going to be a shell of himself physically. Those of you who have been around cancer patients know what a toll it and chemo take on the body. 300 lb. physical specimens don't just happen, and building one from a cancer stricken, chemo depleted body is going to be one helluva task. I hope he makes it back to the NFL as a player, but I seriously doubt 2015.

Sorry to hear about your brother. I did want to clarify one thing. Lung metastasis is not very classic to this particular type of malignancy, especially early on. Quessenberry was reported to have had fatigue and coughing for a week prior to his workup. The thymus gland, which is located just behind the upper sternum (breast bone) and just in front of the trachea (windpipe that leads to the lungs), is where this malignancy first begins to grow. As is grows in that confined space, it cannot expand forward because of the non-yielding boney sternum, so it compresses the tracheal tube behind it.........causing difficulty in breathing and coughing.....often one of the first presenting symptoms (along with fatigue) in this condition. So it is possible that this malignancy may have been caught earlier than later, possibly affording him a better prognosis. It is still mostly up to the extent of bone marrow involvement (a status were are at this time not privy to) which will be the most significant factor in determining his potential for a good response to treatments.

All my thoughts and prayers are focused on the person, not the player.

Personally, I doubt he will ever play in the NFL after this, but if anyone can do it, DQ can. Much more importantly, he has a bigger battle on his hands.

Forget about the football field. At this point coming back and living a normal long life would be like winning 10 super bowls.

Texans’ offensive line dedicates 2014 season to David Quessenberry (http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2014/07/texans-offensive-line-dedicates-2014-season-to-david-quessenberry/)
Posted on July 27, 2014 | By Brian T. Smith
Duane Brown and Chris Myers had a public message Sunday for David Quessenberry: The Texans’ offensive line is dedicating its 2014 season to a much-loved, cancer-stricken teammate.

Brown and Myers are the heart and core of the team’s trenches. While the Texans have been sweating out the start of a new season under first-year coach Bill O’Brien, Quessenberry has been going through his third round of chemotherapy in Houston at M.D. Anderson hospital.

Lineman already wear “Quessenberry Strong” bracelets and planned T-shirts will raise awareness about lymphoma, while highlighting Quessenberry’s ongoing battle with the disease. Close friend Ben Jones, a Texans guard, continues to send texts to Quessenberry, who participated Saturday in a Relay for Life event in Carlsbad, Calif., which honored cancer survivors and victims, and saw 42 members of team DQStrong raise $11,150.

But with recent training-camp focus on Texans such as Andre Johnson, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Arian Foster, a trio of lineman went out of their way Sunday to return attention to Quessenberry.

“We’re dedicating (the season) to him and we go out and battle like he’s right beside us,” Brown said.

Myers added: “With everything going on with David right now, this season is obviously going to be dedicated to him.”

Quessenberry, 23, was humbled by the message.

Teammates stopped by daily at M.D. Anderson in mid-June, when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins T Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. Jones and several Texans soon took Quessenberry to an Astros game, while a recent Twitter image of a shaved-head Quessenberry showed the 2012 sixth-round pick doing pullups with a proclamation that read, “Cancer messed with the wrong dude.”

But Quessenberry never thought his teammates would dedicate an entire NFL season in his name.

“It’s hard to put into words what it means to have the support of your brothers on the team. … Truly it’s an honor,” said Quessenberry, who recently returned to his home state of California after completing his third round of chemotherapy. “I want to do them proud. I want to come back stronger and come back and help these guys win when I do come back eventually.

“This year I got blind-sided getting diagnosed with cancer. Just knowing that my teammates and my brothers (have) my back is truly something special.”

Jones said the Texans’ lineman wouldn’t have it any other way. A group that’s been thinned out by injuries and attrition is rallying behind a teammate who’ll never play for them this season.

“Every night before we go to bed we say a prayer for the man,” Jones said.

The Texans’ organization backed the push Saturday, announcing a drive to raise $100,000 in Quessennberry’s name for the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

The effort is being guided by center Chris Myers and left tackle Duane Brown, who are close friends of Quessenberry’s.

“You sit back and think about David Quessenberry dealing with what he has to deal with and we have no complaints in the world,” Myers said. “With everything going on with David right now, this season is obviously going to be dedicated to him.”

Coaches and team personnel wore “Texans for DQ” T-shirts Saturday at practice.

The Texans’ final open practice of training camp Aug. 14 will be #DQStrong Day. All staff will wear the shirt and the Texans are encouraging fans and the Houston community to purchase a shirt and wear it with the team.

We are waiting for this conference call with David Quessenberry to begin. He's in California as he fights cancer. #Texans

You know, I was wondering if some of the local Dairy Queen franchises would latch onto this and at least promote it in their locations... you know at least put up signs or something.

Some questions keep sticking in my mind. By the time someone has accumulated 2 liters of fluid in their lungs from lymphoma, they are barely able to breath let alone be in any shape to exercise. Things like this don't happen overnight, nor should it take a trainer to recognize that there is a major problem. Where was the medical team with their multiple checks. How did he pass his physical only 2 months before diagnosis? Many of you would not know this, but Quess was found to have a large lymphoma tumor growing in his chest at the time of diagnosis.......but no signs on routine chest x-ray just 2 months earlier when so-called pass/fail exams are performed on NFL players?

I thought about that too when I first heard about Quess being diagnosed with this ailment. Then I wondered why would chest x-rays be part of any team's pass/fail exams as a matter of course? Not defending them but maybe the med teams just rely on the fact that a guy passes the cardio part of his fitness checkout? Perhaps they only do the chest x-ray if some part of his cardio exam points them in that direction.

I'm pretty sure that a routine chest x-ray is part of the mandatory annual preseason return to play player exam (just like it is for the Combine.) There was a vet player back in 2009 (had a funny name, but can't remember) that claimed that a tumor that was found in his chest by the routine return to play chest x-ray exam which was part of this exam, led to what could have been early life-saving surgery.

It appears that the Texans med team not only stinks at diagnosing knee/shoulder etc... injuries. They have graduated to putting players lives in jeopardy. Great Job!!!! SMH

Cool, repped.

To honor Quessenberry, the Texans have designated Aug. 14 as DQStrong Day. It’s their second practice against Atlanta and the last open practice of training camp.

The Texans are asking fans join staff members in wearing Texans for DQ t-shirts to help them raise at least $100,000 for the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

For those wondering, the #Texans store in NRG Stadium still has plenty of DQ shirts. And they're still available online.

Looks like men's small only online, but recheck.
