Now, why would he have a bag containing $50,000 cash in his car to begin with?

Somebody needs to find out where McNair was at the time of the heist.. He could be trying to get back some of the money that was stolen from him.. Reed better keep a eye on his money.

Apparently he objects to $5 surcharges.

I assume he keeps his FA money in cash so the bank doesn't force him to give the Texans their money back.

Ok, why else would someone withdraw $50,000.00 from a bank, stick it in a bag, and carry the damn thing around in his car?

I can't fathom the cops not asking him that question. And "being rich" wouldn't do it. I guess the hookers have raised their rates in these hard times.

I don't know why, but there is something of a culture of paying in cash in some league circles. 10 football players out for a night of lavish dining, drinking and entertainment can plough through money fast. $1000 bottles of wine/champagne add up fast.

And I wasn't joking above - the entertainment puts $5 per dance extra for plastic.

No, I'm not blaming Ed Reed for McNair's rather stupid mistake. That decision is all on Bob McNair and his cronies as far as I'm concerned. Reed is just doing what entertainers do, and that's get paid. If a team is STUPID enough to overpay some over-the-hill gimpy-assed player with the delusional hopes that he is some kind of freakin' savior, then shame on the doofuses in the front office for their moronic decisions.

I know some blame Reed for the injury thing, but that reeks of naivety in understanding the minds of pro athletes. I have little doubt that Reed thought he could play, at least in his mind. And he probably gave it his best shot. Dude is a HoF player, and those guys don't quit, but their bodies eventually do.

The Texans did not do their homework. When you see a team like the Seahawks do it right, building a championship team through smart drafts and FA decisions instead of throwing a bunch of money at one player, I think it is clear who should be blamed for the Ed Reed debacle. After all, the owner is the one sending his private jet and giving his best Cheshire cat grin at the press conference like he just scooped the one ring to rule them all.

If you're rich what's wrong with carrying that much cash with you? Cash buys you lots of things plastic don't.
1) Instant human services
2) Instant charity
3) ATM independence=time saved
4) insurance from power outage = peace of mind
5) anonymity purchases=use your imagination
And last but not least, it's because they can.

The biggest thing I can think of since I used to play poker all the time is gambling. I dont make Ed Reed money but when I played a lot it wouldnt be unheard of for me to cary 10k +/-

Cak brings up another viable reason. Making it rain is harder with plastic

Paying cash in business deals say buying a tractor etc, I mean cash is legal tender and is not against the law.

Reed has been robbed twice in 54 weeks - his home in Maryland was robbed last year during Super Bowl week when he was in NOLA w/ the Ravens

Ed Reed was moving out of his apartment in Houston and closing bank accounts when he was robbed of $50K. tough year for him in that regard

well if you are closing a bank account they will glady wire transfer the funds to another bank for you, now he might have been taking the cash to the club later before he headed out of town sorry TMC

looks like he is just an idiot

Reed, who played last season for the Houston Texans and New York Jets, told police he withdrew $50,000 from one bank and drove to another bank, presumably to make another transaction.

The future Hall of Famer left the money on the passenger seat of his gray 2006 Audi, registered in Florida. When he returned to the car, the passenger window was smashed and the money was gone, according to the police report.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. The police report said the cash was in a "bag," although it was described as an "envelope" in another report, a police spokesperson said.

Police believe Reed was followed from one bank to the next. The report didn't state why he was carrying such a large amount of cash. The investigation is ongoing.

a stack or banded wrap of hundreds is 10k 5 stacks isnt going into most envelopes. If he was going to a second bank Reed had something fun coming up

You know, it's really fked up that people see this story and the first thing in their head is to wonder why he didn't have it in a bank, or why he had the money in cash. It's his money, and he doesn't have to loan it to a bank unsecured. This creation of a culture where people walking around with cash are suspect is beyond fked up.

Now, he's a dumbass for leaving it in his car. Most people take valuables of much less value out of their car when they leave it. It's not a secure location. But then again, $50K to him is probably about like $50 to us. At least, for now. ;)

I was thinking the same exact thing. Let the man carry $1 million in cash if he wants to, it's his money. Heck I would do the same thing, it's not like banks are any safer.

I haven't read anyone saying he doesn't have a right to carry that much cash around. Only that it's stupid to do so. Do you think he's that stupid? I don't, so I suspect some alternate reason about which we speculate. Most reasons are not pretty, but that doesn't mean we know he is guilty of misbehavior. Only that it is suspicious.

I know banks are safer than carrying big amounts of cash around, but it happens quite often that people who carry huge amounts of cash all of sudden are assumed they are doing something "suspicious".

All I meant was that it shouldn't be assumed right away that he was on his way to a drug deal.
