View Full Version : 1-1 Scorecard

Marshall

I don't do polls, but I could use a scorecard for which of you favor the following scenarios with the 1-1 pick of the upcoming draft. If a pick, please add the player you want. Just copy and past and add your name under the appropriate scenario.

Scenario 1 - Pick QB

Scenario 2 - Pick Other

Scenario 3 - Trade Back

Scenario 3 - ONLY if we trade back no farther than #4.

Otherwise, Scenario 1.

Unless the combine really makes me a believer in someone else, I don't want to see anyone other than Bortles, Bridgewater, Manziel or Clowney with the first pick.

Lets not overthink this .... This team has a desperate need for a QB. Either you have your QB or you go get one. They have their pick of the litter at 1:1. They take a QB.

(which one ? we can argue that from now till draft day)

My problem with that is its basically saying we are pissing away this year and next cause you almost have to chalk up a rookie QB's season as a learning year. So we're waiting a year with nothing at QB , then throwing away a 2nd season .... that's hard to swallow.
I'm not sold on the idea that next years QB group is any better than this group where we have our choice of the top three at 1:1. Is Mariota , Hundley , Winston or Hogan really any better than Bridgewater , Manziel or Bortles ? Maybe .... maybe not.

Not picking a QB at 1.1 means that the Texans have identified a QB who can be had later . Saying that means they'll overpick this guy cause they can't miss out on him being taken between picks .

I think they have to get a QB this year because they are treading water until they find the guy who is going to lead them . I think we have a group of " the grass is greener " who believe it's always better on the otherside of the QB .

Not greener, I just don't love any QB in this draft.

I think Brett Smith /Murray/Garrapolo have just as much talent/chance of being good as TB/Bortles/JM. So I certainly don't want a QB at 1-1.

The difference between my and Corrosion/BoB's thinking is that I think this team is a 3 yr rebuild. You certainly aren't going to be able to rebuild properly in 1 offseason. The Texans record may not show it next yr because I see a 9-7,7-9 type season due to SOS.

I don't think we are a very far apart on this subject. I could be talked into taking BPA @ 1:1 or after a trade without it taking much convincing. I've said for a long time that I wasn't sure any of these QB's were franchise types.

Im in agreement here as well , I don't see a quick fix. There were just too many issues and the QB spot wont be an overnight fix unless they steal one of the top 8 or players at the position in the NFL , none of whom are available and a rookie will take at least 1 and more realistically 2-3 years to reach "contender" status.

QB - Nuff Said.
LG - Wade Smith was bad and made Brown look bad
RT - Can we just cut Newton already ?!
RB - Foster was hurt every other minute , Tate's a goner.
WR - AJ was AJ but the rest of them did a buncha ... nuttin.
TE - OD hurt off and on with a $6m cap hit. Graham an FA.

DE - Ninja's an FA. Would like him back , still need depth at the position.
DT - Earl Mitchell's a JAG and FA.
ILB - Sharpton has spent more time on the trainers table than Texan Bill has at the (o)(o) bar. Cushing's been MIA for two years due to serious injuries. Mays is JAG - Sharpton & Mays are both FA's. I thought Tarpinian played pretty well .... this is another hole in the dike.
OLB - Brooks Reed & Mercilus might be a serviceable duo but they aint very dynamic.
CB - JJo hurt off and on. KJax played well. McCain was a joke. Harris ???

Positions that weren't in need of help woulda been a shorter list.

Safety - pending Manning is healthy. Manning , Swearinger & Keo are a good trio. I think Keo played solid last season for the most part.
LT - Brown isn't broken , he just had a doughnut next to him all season.
C - Myers wasn't a problem.
RG - Brandon Brooks wasn't all bad , chalk it up to experience.

McNair is delusional to think this is a quick fix especially with their current cap situation.

The thing is , I don't expect any rookie QB to come in this year or next and make this team a contender. I'd rather get that guy's rookie year behind him as that's the most difficult position to learn.
If you can trade back & still get one of the top three , great. If not there isn't a whole lot of talent separating those three with a few others later but the position needs to be addressed now not later.
No guarantee you have a shot at any of the top talent at the position in the next draft then you are in a situation where you are throwing multiple picks at a guy to move up.

Scenario 4: Wait until after the combine and some pro-days before making decision.

At the moment, I'm leaning Scenario 1 but I need more information at this point.

Teddy b.

I don't need the combine or pro days. I saw these guys play football.

Now, if I was a coach id like to be able to see these guys up close and talk to them. But as a fan, and arm chair scout the combines and pro days do nothing for me.

Seriously ? I'd make a trade that gave us nothing higher than a low first or maybe even a high second rounder if the volume of total picks for our 1.1 was high enough.

Great post

If you don't think there's a franchise QB in this draft amongst the supposed top 3 QB's , what do you do?

I either take Smith/Murray in the 3rd, sign a vet FA and have just as good a chance at getting my franchise QB after strengthening the trenches. Or trade a 3rd for Mallett, who I think has as much natural ability as any QB in this draft.

I get after the Schaub thingy that fans are leery of making that type of trade. But Mallett has more natural ability than Schaub has ever thought about having. Mallett despite his southern Arkansas dialect is a child of 2 teachers and can throw a ball 80 yds. He also has good feet to get back and get set up to throw quickly and can maneuver around a dirty pocket, despite not having good speed. Since BOB coached Mallett I am very comfortable with him making the call.

I've got a question I'm going to PM you.

They need to get someone to start grooming IMO . I think a QB's number one asset is his ability to think and how much he wants to win . That all in his mind . You can get a guy with decent talent if his minds right and be OK .

Agreed

Which is why I don't want to spend 1-1 on a guy when I can probably find his = in the 3rd rd in this draft.

How much difference will there be between JM/TB/Bortles and Smith/Murray/McCarron/Mettenberger? Not enough for me to spend 1-1. They all have the tools to be starters in the NFL and it will come down to the mental part of the game.

There isn't much difference separating Bortles , Garoppolo , Smith , Murray , McCarron or Mettenberger ....

Manziel & Bridgewater on the other hand have some "special ability." TB's pocket presence is outstanding , Manziel's ability once things break down is .... amazing.
But they both come with questions to go along with those. For TB its mechanics and level of competition , for Manziel its "can he run the offense when it doesn't break down?"

The rest of those QB's are somewhere behind the top two. I just cant make up my mind if their "special abilities" are special enough to warrant taking either @ 1:1 over taking one of those others later down the line. Bret Smith may last until the 4th or 5th .... and he's a much better QB than that.

Scenario 1 is my preferred with Bridgewater being my first choice and Manziel being runner up.

Scenario 2 is my second preference, with that "other" player being Clowney.

And scenario 3 I have no thoughts on because I really don't see it happening.
