View Full Version : Is there any player/scenario where you would trade up from 33 back into the 1st rd.?

I know we need picks/players.

But is there any player that if they fell you wouldn't mind trading up to get? Future picks? Lower round picks?

Sure, if they think they are just going to miss out on a Logan Mankins, Duane Brown, DeMeco Ryans, Clay Matthews, etc.

If they have passed on a QB in the top half they should certainly be considering moving up to get the one of the remainder they like if there are any they like substantially better.

I'm always a huge proponent of trading up. I've kind of discussed in detail in other threads that I think we absolutely suck at the draft once we leave the 1st round, so I'm all about getting 2 of those guys.

For the sake of this argument I'm going to assume we used pick 1-1 at QB.

I think we need to see what Romeo (assuming he's our guy) wants to do to the defense: minor tweaks, bigger changes, total overhaul then let him draft what he sees fit there. I can't speculate on what that is just yet, but generally in the first round it's better than what's in the 2nd, so yeah... trade up please.

I agree with this, but do you have any specific player in mind that you'd trade up for?

Looking at guys currently projected around the middle to back half of the first -- lewan, amaro, nix, shazier, marquis lee....would you trade up for any of these guys? Others?

If mike Evans runs a 4.6 or something and he falls some would you move up to get him? I think obrien could do some special things with Evans playing as a hybrid type player in the slot/ wing position.

What you're asking is would you give up the 65th pick to move the #33 pick to the #22 pick.

Because the Texans do not have the salary cap space to help replace the players they lose to free agency with equal or better value the 65th pick has higher priority and value.

I think I'd rather wait for a QB or someone other teams want to fall to 33, and then work a trade back from 33. Every year we see teams fighting for the first pick in the 2nd and 4th round because some prospect unexpectedly drops. I know some folks want that trade to happen for 1-1, but realistically I think 2-1 and 4-1 are the spots where we need to look at adding some picks.

For instance, in 2013, the 49ers traded the 2-2 (34) pick (Justin Hunter) to the Titans for their 2nd round pick (40), their 7th, and a 2014 3rd. The 49ers got Tank Carradine DE in the 2nd, packaged the 7th with their 3rd to move up a few spots and grab Corey Lemoniner LB, and they still have that 3rd for next year. That's a hell of a deal and I would love to get something like that.

In 2013, the Jags traded back from 4-1 (98) to 4-4 (101) for the Eagles 7th round pick. That's a minor deal, but still some value there.

I think there is some value to be gained in those middle rounds, even if it is a low pick. We need a lot more talent on this team, even if it is just positional depth and special teams guys that can gun.

Eric Ebron is a stud TE that will do wonders for our new QB. Might have to trade up to 20 to get him.

I like Evans, but we have too many holes to go after him and our WR/RBs are 2 of the few positions we have kind of covered. Same goes for Lee.

I don't want to address RT until much later in the draft (most disagree with me). I've stated in many threads why so Lewan is out for me.

I really like Amaro, but think there might be more value in AS Jenkins and we don't have to trade up.

We gotta trade up pretty high to get Nix, that's gonna cost us for sure, I'd rather wait for best NT to come to us, maybe like DaQuon Jones in the 3 would be cool for me.

I really like Shazier, but people in this thread ( I think Texian ) have got me pretty high on Attaochu and I, personally, would love to gamble on him or an injured Breslin later.

Agree, I like trading down from 33. That overnight to think about it makes some GMs just too dang antsy about getting their guy so they overpay. Played correctly, you can squeeze those guys. http://forum.outdoorchannel.de/forum/images/smilies/5squeeze.gif

I prefer trade downs for more picks then moving up. But for arguements sake and the point of the thread I guess two that some grade in the middle of the draft I'd consider it would be Ha Ha Clinton-Dix or CJ Mosley.

Clinton-Dix because as O'Brien pointed out, you're in the nickle or dime more than your base defensive package these days and he's more of a free safety in comparison to Swearinger who is better in the box when possible. Not sure the salary implications but it would leave you free to release Danieal Manning for cap relief (though as I said, don't know if the penalty is worth it or not).

CJ because Cushing hasn't had the greatest of luck injury wise and when he goes, our inside linebackers go with him. Now the question becomes how often would he be used with Crennel but I watch someone like the 49ers with Willis and Bowman and a good coordinator knows how to keep those guys on the field. I could see nickle with Watt inside with the other DE (or good rushing DT) with the OLB's on the outside while Mosley and Cush stay in with five DB's. Just think he'd give us some needed flexibility and toughness in the middle.

I could see is moving up into the first round for Nix or Tuitt. Maybe a TE if BOB falls in love with one.

Probably not as I have alternates if the guy I want is gone at my pick. I could trade 5,6 & 7 for late 4th. Or if I could use some combination from 2015 using round three and later to get another 3rd this draft.

There are scenario's I could see moving back up a few spots from 33 to get a specific player.

Lets say there is a run on at the DE position and I feel there is a significant drop off beyond player X and he's next off the list ... I may make that move depending upon players at other positions grading out significantly lower than player X.

TE , OT and DE are positions that come to mind for me as there is a significant drop off from one tier to the next.

OT has 6 players with first round talent DE 4 , OLB 4 and TE 2. All four positions of significant need for this Texans team.
Imagine a scenario where you have drafted your QB and 14 of those 16 players have been selected at pick 25 .... do you sit and hope one is still there at 33 or do you move up to 26 or 27 to get one of the two remaining top tier players now ??
I might let a pick or two go by , allowing one of the two to come off the board .... but not both.

A scenario like this is very plausible as we see runs on DE , OLB and OT quite often while the talent pool at the TE spot is rather thin at the top.

I'd like to come out of this draft with two of the following (One being a QB)

QB
Bortles
Bridgewater
Manziel

DE
Clowney
Elay
Tuitt
Murphy

TE
Ebron
Amaro

OLB
Barr
Mack
Shazier
Beasley

OT
Matthews
Robinson
Kouandjio
Lewan
Martin
Richardson

The players in blue are potential targets between 25-33

It all depends upon how many of those players are left between now and my next selection. If by 25 there are enough remaining that I'm guaranteed one of them , I stay put at 33. If their numbers are not sufficient that I'm guaranteed one of them , I have to consider a move.

How many QB's and WR's are selected early will have a big impact on who we have to select from or if a move needs to be made.

Oh boy here we go again forgetting about NT. When will we learn?

I'm not forgetting about NT .... Just that I think there are a couple guys we can target in round's 3 , 4 & 5 in Jones , McCullers & Carrethers.

My priorities in rounds 1-2 are a QB and another top tier talent at one of the above positions , unless a guy like Nix , Justin Gilbert or Dennard falls which isn't likely.

Too bad Danny Shelton went back to Washington St , he could end up in the first round next season.

I think Timmy Jernigan would be a nice fit at DE in a 3-4 but I don't think I would trade up to get him considering he is projected top 15.
