2014 PFF Free Agency Tracker
PFF Analysis Team | January 7, 2014 (https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/01/07/2014-pff-free-agency-tracker/)

Every year we launch into free agency with the aim to deliver the most comprehensive service out there. We’ve got rankings, breakdowns, team needs and some special features all coming up, but it starts here…

With the Pro Football Focus 2014 Free Agency Tracker.

We’ve got a rundown on all the available free agents with a breakdown of their 2013 snaps and player grades (though, note, grades aren’t ranking the free agent as they’re just a part of the evaluation process for what makes a desirable free agent).

This year we’re making it even easier for you to find what you’re looking for by breaking the pages down a number of ways:

Free agent lists by position:

Now for some disclaimers:

- The overall ratings only tell part of the story and feature no weighting for specific facets of play.

- All ratings and snap counts are from the 2013 regular season only and ratings between players of two different positions are not meant to be compared.

- Sorting players by position and ranking won’t necessarily get you the same order we’ve used in some of our articles. That’s because we’ve done more to put the numbers into context. The grades require intelligence applied to them.

- This list of players consists only of players who ended the season on a roster in 2013 and are scheduled to become free agents when the 2014 league year begins, or players who have been released during the offseason; players that are exclusive rights free agents are not included.

- Player ages are as of September 1, 2014.

These PFF ratings are cumulative, right?

It'd be nice if they'd standardize them per snap. For example: (rating/snaps)100.

As it is listed, you have Bell with the best rating at 15.1 followed by Blount (10.1), Moreno (9.9), Brown (6.9) and Leonard (6.3).

But, if you standardize them, Blount scores considerably better than all with 3.49. For reference, Bell (2.68), Leonard (2.07), Brown (1.82) and Moreno (1.36).

Also, Dwyer, who's 8th with 4.1 would score 2.90 standardized (better than all of the above but Blount).

These PFF ratings are cumulative, right?

Yes, positive or negative rating per play added up.

But RBs, for instance, are graded on running/receiving/blocking(pass block/screen block/run block)/penalties and then those 4 grades are added to get an overall rating per game. Drilling down even further you can see how many QB sacks/hits/hurries were due to that particular RB; how many missed tackles they caused; complete receptions mapping, targets, YAC, % caught, INTs when targeted, missed tackles in pass game, drops, etc. Then each RB has an offensive snaps summary for run/pass/run block/pass block.

So more snaps gives the potential for higher positive and lower negative overall totals. Like Watt had to have a lot of snaps to get his +111.6 overall rating. But as far as crunching the numbers further than what PFF presents, I think you can end up confusing the message they originally give.

Hakeem Nicks is not the only player to be late & miss treatment. He’s not a bad guy. But in a contract year, this frustrated #Giants.

Multiple sources tell me Hakeem Nicks was fined repeatedly for being late to meetings & missing treatment. He battled thru several injuries

From #NFLGameDay: WR Hakeem Nicks is not expected back with #Giants. Besides disappointing play, he was fined multiple times by the team

Cut & Restructure Candidates (http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/nfl/46063/309/cut--and--restructure-candidates)

With salary and bonus information gleaned from the NFL Players Association and media reports, I've compiled a list of potential 2014 offseason contract restructures and salary cap casualties. The fact that a player is listed here does not necessarily mean I think they'll be released. It means I believe their 2014 scheduled payments may be deemed by their team to no longer match their on-field value. Ultimately, I'd guess around half of the players here get released outright, and more than half will be approached by their club about an offseason restructure or pay cut...

This is How NFL free agency "really" works (http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/How-NFL-free-agency-really-works-2784.html)
Free agency is our (agents) time to shine for our clients. It’s extremely difficult for players to get to a second or third contract so everything has to be orchestrated perfectly for the client to score a lifetime setting deal. On the team side, a few bad free agent signings can get GMs fired, weigh heavy on the cap and hurt a team for several years beyond the signing(s).

Free agency is supposed to work like this:

Teams looking to resign their own players may initiate talks in October or November. Negotiations for top players can take several months to complete. Some teams purposely slow play the process to keep the player on the hook so they stay in consideration. A team is supposed to have exclusivity in talking to its own players but that’s not really the case. If another team contacts the player (usually via his agent), it’s considered tampering and that team will be fined and lose draft picks for doings so.

In 2014, free agency officially begins on March 11th. However, Players/agents are allowed to start negotiating with other teams starting March 8th.

This is how free agency really works...

Basically, I took a one year deal the year before, did a first-round tender in Tampa [as a restricted free agent], so I definitely just want to be paid. You know, I’m not trying to be the highest paid guy but I want to be compensated with the top guys.”

Agree with former #Buccaneers GM Mark Dominik: DT Earl Mitchell is a good value for free agency. Better fit for 4-3?

That seems extremely high for a guy who has been at best "middling" next to one outstanding DE and one above average DE. I am under the impression he was here during Bush's last year before Phillips came in and didn't really do anything (granted, he might've been a rookie if he was here at that time).

He's been playing out of position for us. I think his best fit is as a nose in a 43. In a 34 he should be playing end.

I will plead ignorance here. I'm not used to the term 4-3 NT. I have always associated NT with lining up over the center in a 3-4 or 5-2. Of course when I played a base 4-3 we were called Defensive Guards at the inside positions and Defensive Tackles at the outside positions.

But I'm so old I played both ways and wore 13 as an interior lineman. And the goal posts were still on the goal line. (Nice extra blockers if you used them.)

A traditional NT is head up on the center. In a 43 defense it is not necessary. But a lot of teams use a 43 Over, made famous by the Tampa 2 defensive style, which shifts the strongside DT into a three technique and the weakside DT shades the center. Because of this formation, the weakside tackle must be a little bit stronger at the point of attack than a traditional DT. He is often called the NT to distinguish him from the quicker three tech.

What in the world have McCown or Henne done to deserve an Alex Smith sized contract? They are closer to out of the league than starter money even low starter money. McCown played last year for $865k, Henne for $3.4 mil. McCown upped his stock some as a backup. Henne did not improve his with his completely normal for his career 76 QB rating which is almost the same as Schaub's miserable year at 73.

I think they are the cream of the crop in this years free agent QB class. 9 million guaranteed for a vet QB for 2 years isnt a bad deal for a team looking to develop a QB. They can both still play and start in this league IMO. And supply and demand commands the price.

So it is the concept of not drafting a QB high you are bolstering.

I don't know about you but if I go to the grocery store and all they have is mealy soft tomatoes at the same price as normal I walk on by rather than figuring "well they're the cream of the crop right now." This is a crap FA class. Even if I bought into the placeholder QB theory I wouldn't be offering full price for the mealy tomatoes.

And ... b) Where clubs have continued tagging is at positions where tag is cheap (ex: DT, TE, S). Cheap tag = less need for long-term deal.

So ... a) With the cap having been relatively flat lately, clubs are more reluctant to use the tag and dump big figures in to a single year.

One trend to keep an eye on ... In 2011, 10 of 14 tagged players got multi-year deals. In '12, 12 of 21 got deals. Last year? Just 1 of 8.

Not a HUGE space eater, but 6'5 - 301, can likely put on more weight if needed. He is plenty big enough IMO. He's a solid fit as a DT in a 3-4 and I like what he brings. He played the SDE spot in Seattle which is basically a 5' technique. Could be a fit at DE across from Watt.

I'm hoping Byrd follows his DC to the Browns. Him and TJ Ward as the Browns' safeties would be stout, assuming the Browns can re-sign Ward. They have a ton of money to spend, and that would be a good place to start.

Interesting possibility (https://twitter.com/greggabe/status/440239283060740097): Lovie wanted to draft Byrd when he was coming out of college, and Byrd's father is the DB coach in Tampa Bay so you have to figure they will be in the picture.

How many FA's go from good teams (SF) to bad ones (TB) all for the money and end up being worth it?

For NFL teams, the next three months are the league’s version of Christmas shopping. Between free agency, which starts March 11, and the draft, which kicks off in early May, this is the time to get your salary cap situations cleaned up (as much as possible) and take a run at the most intriguing prospects. And with free agency just around the corner, it’s time to take a closer look at the most appealing prospects — starting with a class of quarterbacks that don’t really excite, and a group of running backs with some interesting sleepers...

Business is business, but there are consequences that come with tagging players that has nothing to do with money.

Original intent of the franchise tag is nothing like how most players view it currently, which is less than positive.

Reports of Graham & Orakpo not planning on signing tenders right away, and not showing up in the near future, is exactly what GM's do not want.

Personally, I think owners should pressure the NFLPA to do something about this. The use of the franchise tag was agreed upon in the latest CBA, it shouldn't be an issue. Players shouldn't be getting bent out of shape. & if they do, they shouldn't be taking it out on the team, they should be taking it out on the NFLPA who argued on their behalf & agreed to the tag.

Mitchell has become a real inside force and one of the most productive penetrators in the NFL at generating consistent inside pressure. He is a much better athlete than most guys who play his position, and his effort is outstanding. He is a one-gap penetrator with good quickness and really works to finish the play. Now that the Ravens have decided not to designate offensive tackle Eugene Monroe as their franchise player, negotiations between the two sides are slated to continue.
It would have cost the Ravens $11.654 million on a one-year franchise tag for Monroe, an expensive proposition.
With that decision, though, the clock is ticking toward March 11, when Monroe is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. NFL teams can start talking with Monroe, one of the top free-agent tackles along with Kansas City Chiefs lineman Branden Albert, during the legal tampering period that begins Saturday.

Here's a quicklist of the top 18 paid DTs in the league last year, please tell me where you would slot Earl Mitchell in your evaluation. Is he top 10 material? That would put him at 6 million +.

Bill Polian seems to think so. Mitchell makes a surprise appearance in his "group A" players available in free agency. ESPN insider article so I'll just post a little bit, first of all his criteria:

"Who are the best-available unrestricted free agents in this year's class? We graded every player this offseason and have compiled below our list of guys who earned grades of A, A-minus and B-plus -- 14 in total. The grading scale translates as follows:

A: $6-plus million AAV (annual average value), three-plus years in term and/or guaranteed money

B: $2 million to $6 million AAV, two years or fewer in term and/or guaranteed money

C: $2 million or less AAV, two years or fewer in term and/or guaranteed money

D: Minimum salary, one-year contract"

The evaluation of Mitchell:

"Mitchell has become a real inside force and one of the most productive penetrators in the NFL at generating consistent inside pressure. He is a much better athlete than most guys who play his position, and his effort is outstanding. He is a one-gap penetrator with good quickness and really works to finish the play. Dqwell didn't make the transition to 3-4 ILB last year for the Browns. Despite having lots of great talent around him on D, he still was one of the 10 worst ILBs in the league last year. He's a 4-3 ILB through and through. He also has had some injury issues, which should give a GM pause before signing him. His best attribute is his leadership on the field. I wouldn't worry about it too much, considering how bad the Colts defense was last year.

That is just bat**** crazy to give him 6m+ APY. He was playing next to the best DE in the league and pretty good one in Antonio Smith, he's going to get some good pressure due to that alone. The fact that he was routinely getting taken out of his lane by centers and guards makes him a horrible 3-4 NT. Put him next to a bigass DT in a 4-3 and he might be good, but he's not a one-man wrecking crew.

Rules for what is and isn't allowed this weekend in negotiations with free agents:
During the three-day period commencing at 12 noon, New York time, on Saturday, March 8, and ending at 3:59:59 p.m., New York time, on Tuesday, March 11, clubs are permitted to contact, and enter into contract negotiations with, the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expirations of their 2013 Player Contracts at 4:00 p.m., New York time, on March 11. However, a contract cannot be executed with a new club until 4:00 p.m., New York time, on March 11.

1. During this negotiating period, a club is permitted to:
a. Submit a written summary of the club’s negotiating position to a certified agent;
b. Express its position as to signing bonus, length of contract, amounts of signing bonus and yearly compensation, and other items;
c. Adjust its negotiating position in response to a certified agent’s position; and
d. Engage in an oral exchange of positions.

2. A club must express that it is stating a negotiating position, not making an offer. No part of the exchange of information is binding on either party.

3. A club cannot:
a. Execute a contract;
b. Submit a draft of an NFL Player Contract to a certified agent or the player;
c. Make an “offer;”
d. Enter into a written or oral agreement of any kind, express or implied, or make promises or representations of any type concerning the terms or conditions of employment to be offered to any Unrestricted Free Agent for inclusion in a Player Contract after the start of the new League Year;
e. Provide assurances of intent as to the future execution of an NFL Player Contract;
f. Announce an agreement or an agreement in principle; or
g. Discuss or make travel arrangements for a player.

During this negotiating period, a prospective Unrestricted Free Agent cannot visit a club (other than the player’s current club) at its permanent facility or at any other location, and no direct contact is permitted between the player and any employee or representative of a club (other than the player’s current club). If a player is self-represented, clubs are prohibited from discussions with the player during the negotiating period.

Furthermore, clubs (other than the player’s current club) may not discuss or make any travel arrangements with prospective Unrestricted Free Agent players, their certified agents, or anyone else associated with the player until the expiration of those players’ contracts at 4:00 p.m., New York time, on March 11.

The three-day negotiating period applies only to potential Unrestricted Free Agents; it does not apply to players who are potential Exclusive Rights Players or Restricted Free Agents, or to players who have been designated as Franchise Players or Transition Players.

Jared Allen won't return to Vikings, to test free agency for 1st time

Four-time All-Pro defensive end Jared Allen is not planning on returning to Vikings, according to a league source.

The future Hall of Famer and longtime Viking has whittled down his suitors to less than five teams and Minnesota is not among them. In a move affecting Allen, the Vikings agreed to terms with Everson Griffen on Sunday, keeping the pass rusher in Minnesota. After already re-signing Brian Robison to an extension earlier this season, those moves and their other roster vacancies, make it very unlikely they would remain at the top of the market to keep Allen.

So the Browns basically traded T.J. Ward for Donte Whitner and D'Qwell Jackson for Karlos Dansby.

At some point Denver's going to have to pay for all of this FA spending they've done these past couple of years, no?

Or are they the new Philly?

They will pay for it after Peyton retires.

Saw this on Donte Whitner, pretty cool:

...

At 6 years old, Whitner was playing catch in his Kinsman Road driveway, and the ball rolled into the street. He darted out after it and was struck by a car driving down the street. His mom, Deborah Robinson, got the call at work that her eldest son had been hit by a car, and she was convinced he was dead.

"Nobody would tell me anything but that he had been hit," she said. "All I could think of was that he was gone and they weren't telling me."

She raced home from her job at a nearby nursing home, blinded by her tears and screaming hysterically. "I could've been killed myself," she said. She was driven to Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, where Whitner had been taken by ambulance.

"I had to be strong in front of him," she said. "But the doctors told me he'd probably never walk again and that he'd never, ever play sports again."

Whitner's legs had been shattered in 15 places, and he was placed in a full-body cast for six months. Robinson bought a little red wagon to cart him around, and carried him up and down the stairs at home. After that, he was placed in a half-cast for another eight weeks and then had to learn how to walk all over again.

"He kept trying to tear those casts off his legs," she said. Whitner vividly recalls being told by the doctors that he would probably never walk again.

"Even when you're 6, you understand what it means when somebody tells you you're not going to walk or play sports again," said Whitner. "It was the first time in my life where I actually had to believe in myself when nobody else did."

About four months after he took those first steps, he asked his mom to buy him a basketball hoop.

"I didn't want to do it," said Robinson. "I was so scared those little legs were going to pop. But I couldn't say no. He was so under the weather that he needed something. Sports was all he thought about."

Before long, Whitner was shooting hoops. By age 8, he wanted to play Pop Warner football, but knew his mom would never let him. He forged her signature and had his aunt help him get the physical.

"One day, his coach called me and said, 'Where's Donte? He's missed a few practices and we really need him!' " recalled Robinson. "I said, 'You must be talking about one of my nephews. Donte doesn't play football.' "

Robinson searched the back porch and found Whitner's hidden uniform.

"He had stopped going because he thought I wouldn't approve," said Robinson, who keeps the forged registration form in a frame. "And he's right, I probably would've never let him play."

As time went on, word kept getting back to Robinson about how good her son was in football. "I went and watched and I could see what they were talking about, when I was able to keep my eyes open."

And on the second day of 2014 NFL free agency, the Eagles continued to rebuild their special teams unit. Earlier in the day, they signed safety/special teams ace Chris Margaros. Now, the Eagles have announced the signing of linebacker/special teams contributor Bryan Braman. It's a 2-year deal for Braman.

Braman, 26, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Houston Texans in 2011. He stands tall at 6-5, 251 lbs.

Most importantly, though, Braman is tough. Look at him make this tackle despite not having his helmet on:

PFF 2014 Free Agency Deal Grader (https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/03/11/2014-free-agency-deal-grader/)
A cap rise means NFL players hitting free agency can be expecting some big paydays in their future. Of course as good as that is for them and as easy as it is to get caught up in handing out big money, that doesn’t necessarily make the deal a good one for a team.

So as we do every year we’re bringing back our annual deal grader using the PFF methodology for grading to tell you what we think about how the deals shake up. You’ll get more updated feedback and analysis from our Live Reaction Blog but if you want to see how we see deals compared to each other, here’s the place to be.

Note: We’ll only be grading deals where players have hit the open market. So players cut are fair game, while as players re-signed before 4pm on Tuesday 11th of March will not be.

+2.0: A move that is guaranteed to take your franchise to another level

+1.5: That’s just great value!

+1.0: That should work out very nicely!

+0.5: Common sense shines through

0.0: Color us indifferent

-0.5: Did you really need to make that move?

-1.0: That’s an awfully big gamble there

-1.5: Now why would you go and do that?

-2.0: You’re bringing back Brett Favre?

Beats me, but we should look at trading Rick Smith for one of Denver's guys...

Overthecap says this about Denver's cap position before free agency started:

Est. Salary Cap Space: $27,471,486
Offensive Spend: 31 Players $75,657,767
Defensive Spend: 31 Players $33,860,431
Specials Spend: 3 Players $7,633,834
Dead Money: $3,935,450

Total: $117,152,032

If the cap is 132 million this year, that would give them about 15 million in free space, plus any carryover from the previous year.

They signed TJ Ward for 5.5m per year, Talib for about 9m a year, and Ware for 10m a year. So yeah, I have no idea where all that money is coming from.

If they use the same front loaded contracts everyone else uses, 4 contracts that average $4M cap hits for 2014, they can sign about 4 impact players.

Tj Ward probably has a $1M cap hit, Ware & Talib probably $5M each.

$1M+$5M+$5M=$11M leaving them another contract similar to Tj Ward's, maybe two (depending on how far off my assumptions are) to give out before restructuring or cutting other players.

Not sure what you are trying to describe by using front loaded there.

Your numbers are off. For example, TJ Ward's contract averages $5.75. He is getting $14 mil guaranteed. Typically most of the guaranteed money is signing bonus, say $8 mil. A league minimum base salary is $730k. With prorated signing bonus that would be $2.73 mil cap hit in 2014.

I'm not making anything up... the word is assumption & average are in my post. I think "probably" is in there some where as well. Ware's contract is unique, because it's such a short term, 3 years. doesn't give them a lot of room to work with, but it's the same concept. all together, their cap hits will be substantially less than the avg/yr..... & yes, I meant back loaded, not front.

Well ESPN says Ware will get 13 million this season, 7 next, and I would assume 10 the last year of the contract. I dont see any signing bonus numbers. So it seems pretty straight forward.

So with the Broncos estimated cap availability of 15 million (per Dutch) I am not sure how they are going to get Ward and Talib under the cap without restructuring Manning and maybe some others.

Edit: Spotrac shows them 24 million under the cap.

Look for Clady as a cut/restructure. He is in the 2nd year of his contract with an $8.6 mil cap hit but his signing bonus was only $3 mil so they can clear $6.2 in space by dumping him. Or they can convert most of his 2014 salary to bonus and reduce his cap hit to about $3.4.

Welker is on the last year of his contract so they are stuck unless they extend him. Cutting would clear $6 mil but they are already losing Decker.

Vasquez doesn't save anything to cut.

Von Miller is on the last year of his rookie deal so they would need a big resigning for him.

Demaryus Thomas is in the same boat as Miller.

Manning they could convert salary to bonus and clear about $10 mil. That's major kicking the can and would make his cap next year go to $27 mil.

That's their top 6 guys.

Tamme and Dreesen if cut would clear about $3 mil and $2.5 mil.

Dragic was asking for 10+ million per, Rockets signed Lin for 8M per season. That decision doesn't look all that great now with Dragic playing wonderfully, for now, but it's not a bad move by any stretch.

Ariza is averaging 15/6/3 with almost 2 steals per game while shooting 43% from the three point line this year. He's still a good defender as well. Ariza wasn't a mistake.

Morey has been beating up on other GMs since he started. Sure, he isn't perfect, but he doesn't make mistakes like other GMs do. He makes far less of them and wins the majority of his moves.

OKC and Miami to start, both were worse than the Yao/T-Mac rockets. dude in Indiana has been better w/o bunches of top 5 picks and silly FA signings.

And right now he can't trade either of those bad contracts (admit he was smart not trade them poorly).

Dragic wanted 10m a year, but he ended up getting 4 years 32m for about 8.2m APY with the 4th year being a player option. Lin was going to be offered 4 years 28.8m. The structure was going to be 4.9,4.9,4.9,14m with the last year being a team option. The problem was, the 4th year didn't hit a salary cap pinch point for the Knicks, so they rearranged it, BUT it was after Dragic agreed to terms with the Suns. The Rockets were concerned that the Knicks would match the offer and didn't want to be out of a PG, so they changed it it to the 5,5,15 deal we have now.

Ariza was overpaid at the time, but he was still developing. He had some good years, but wasn't worth the 7m APY. However, Morey unloaded him for Courtney Lee, which was pretty awesome.

And of course, Morey acquired James Harden for a few picks and Kevin Martin, which was the best trade in the NBA this decade. That lead to signing Dwight Howard and becoming WCF contenders. The only GM who has done better in acquiring superstars recently would be Miami, and I think it's pretty obvious why that is.

Pats get revis
One year rental...
While Revis' deal has a cash value of $12 million this year, as reported by ESPN, the sides added a second year to the pact. The second year is worth $20 million, a sum so large it makes it unlikely the Patriots would pay it, thus making Revis an unrestricted free agent again in 2015.

The second year helps the team spread the salary-cap charges for Revis over two seasons instead of taking one $12 million cap hit in 2014. It also eliminates the chance he could be given the franchise tag by the Patriots in 2015.

7million this year for Revis, 5m guaranteed for next year + 20m salary. The funny thing about it is that Revis will be cut next year and free to go elsewhere, but the Pats miss out on getting a compensatory pick for him if they go that route.

We payed Dead Reed 5 million for 5 starts. So who am I to say the Pats made a bad move. They might give Revis 12 million for 16-20 starts.

I think they can franchise him for about $12M, no?

Not in 2015 - he is under contract. And not in 2016 unless they keep him for 2015 and then it will be 120% of his 2015 compensation.

No. The deal is actually 2 years, with 7m the first year, 20m the second year. 5m of the 20 is guaranteed. He has a 12m roster bonus on 4/1/2015, so he will be cut before then. You can only franchise tag players with expiring contracts.

Thanks; I thought the guy on the radio this AM said they could use the FT on him... guess he was wrong or I misheard!

Will Wilfork get more money next year on the open market then say if he cut his pay to 5-6 million? I'm not sure.

To people outside New England this might be a surprise... but we've all known this was coming for sometime.. Esp after the achilles injury

OKC and Miami to start, both were worse than the Yao/T-Mac rockets. dude in Indiana has been better w/o bunches of top 5 picks and silly FA signings.

And right now he can't trade either of those bad contracts (admit he was smart not trade them poorly).

I have gone through this before with other dudes, Morey has been one the best dudes in terms on advancing analytics and seemingly like a normal/good dude, but you can't be the best GM in the league w/o significant winning.

He has set -up the Rockets for the next few years, but they have no significant actual results under Morey. I am very willing to give him a few years to finish rounding out the depth, etc around howard/harden.

-----
Back to football,

The point was that the Rockets are not constructed like the original poster claimed. They have and except for two or three of years ALWAYS had a couple of big names (even if flawed like Yao/T-Mac). Morey does have questionable contracts to ok players.

I wouldn't put Miami up there, they are actually terrible at acquiring young talent. Look at their recent draft acquisitions. They got lucky that LeBron decided to join their team.

OKC, Indiana and Portland are the only other teams I would consider to be equal or better than Houston in regards to acquiring talent. So, that's top 4-5. I'd love an NFL GM that's considered top 5. That was my point.

Anyway back to football, I would be interested in Wilfork if I thought we'd actually be competitive. We aren't competitive though. All it takes is a glance at our 3-deep roster to see that we have very little talent.

2nd year is a team option that they will obviously not use. It's basically a one-year deal. I've heard that they are already planning to extend him if he stays healthy this year.

It's about the money (http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-england-patriots/post/_/id/4760160/contract-at-heart-of-wilfork-news)The Patriots recently approached Wilfork about altering the final year of his contract, in which he's scheduled to earn $7.5 million and count $11.6 million against the salary cap. When a team usually approaches a player about his contract, it often means the team is looking for some type of concession

They stand to gain $8M (http://overthecap.com/calculator/?Team=Patriots) if he's cut or traded.

Would you be willing to give up 2-1, this years 7th & next years 7th for Vince & Mallet?

Throw in Derek Newton.

May not have to re. Vince. Just heard on 97.5 he's formally asked NE to be released. Not budging on a pay cut. Don't sound like our wallet is fat enough at the moment. Just guessing here.

If we wait 'till they release him, we won't be able to afford him. If we trade for him, he's ours for one year.

They'll get the cap relief they need/want, the 2-1 which they want, but we're not willing to give, We don't "need" Wilfork (we're not winning the Super Bowl in 2014) but he fills a hole for 2014, we've just got to eat his cap (making Schaub a June 1st cut pays for it), & we get Ryan Mallet (assuming OB wants him).

What happened in Oakland? (http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/What-happened-in-Oakland.html)

How did one team fail offensive tackle Rodger Saffold on his physical examination, while another team passed him?
What injury does Saffold really have? Based on media reports, the offensive tackle suffered a dislocated shoulder in the preseason opener at Cleveland. He missed the next preseason game, but participated in the final two as well as the entire 2013 regular season.

Medically, when a player dislocates his shoulder, the labrum is typically torn. The boney anatomy of the shoulder is like a golf ball on a tee. The ball (head of the humerus) doesn’t tend to stay on the tee (in the socket/glenoid) when the edge of the tee (labrum) is chipped.

Assuming a player at the NFL Scouting Combine was presented with such a labral tear, I would fail him on his physical, but note that he has a correctable problem. I would advise my team that he could still be drafted, but would want them aware of potential surgery. Sometimes the team stays away in these instances, while other times the team chooses to draft and fix the player immediately. A third option would be to draft the prospect and have him play through the upcoming season with a brace before considering future surgery. Each case is unique.

I don’t believe Oakland or their doctors botched this process. The Raiders just weren’t willing to ignore the pre-existing condition. I also don’t believe the Rams or Saffold were hiding anything. Clearly, the Rams believe in Saffold’s shoulder enough to re-sign him. This is just how business is conducted in the NFL.
