He is a solid rotation DL guy, great in pursuit, not so much at point of attack.

and Mitchell is a FA next yr along with the Ninja. and like recent years past the Texans will not have enough salary cap $$$ to re-sign them and will have to make due with potential draft picks and vet minimums. and yet like years past those still in denial will flood message boards on how Smubiak has improved the team with players of lesser value and inadequate replacements.

Sure. With JJ and Ninja on each side, Earl Mitchell hasn't seen a double team in his pro career.

mitchell's been decent this year no doubt. but there are many reasons why he might be leading the league in tackles.

1 reason could be that jj and smith are focused primarily on rushing the QB and another reason could be the texans D has been on the field quite a bit this season.

i'd like to seem him retained as well as another NT to be brought in to battle for the starting job.

Not quite...

If you only include players listed as "NT" by the NFL (http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?archive=false&conference=null&statisticPositionCategory=DEFENSIVE_LINEMAN&season=2013&seasonType=REG&experience=&tabSeq=1&qualified=false&Submit=Go), Mitchell is ranked 3rd in combined(37) tackles and 4th in solo(23) tackles.

Damon Harrison has 52 combined & 27 solo, Dontari Poe has 44 combined and 37 solo, etc.

Add in players listed as "DT" and he falls down the list.

PFF (http://www.profootballfocus.com/) rolls them all into one group (DT/NT) and does their own tackle counts which are different from the way the NFL does -- ask Wade Phillips, he ranted about this early in the season (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/article-2/Wade-Phillips-has-a-pet-peeve-when-it-comes-to-stats/f49a93fd-24b7-4c84-ba32-c47e1f30603e).

PFFs cumulative ratings have Mitchell rated 62nd/69 DTs/NTs, with the 3rd worst run defense rating.

The Texans are 31st in the league in defensive plays. They are 7th in offensive plays.

Guess I won't believe any more stats from Drew Dougherty
