Many of Houston's defensive players left Sunday's loss to the Patriots talking about the adjustments that New England made to the Texans' plan.

The Patriots' offensive adjustments were too good at some points, in Texans defensive end Antonio Smith's estimation.

Smith said the Texans introduced new wrinkles into their defense this week. He said that even though the Texans had never done those things in prior games, which would mean they weren't on film, the Patriots knew they were coming before they happened.

"I'm very suspicious," Smith said. "I just think it will be a big coincidence if that just happened by chance. I don't know for sure, but I just know it was something that we practiced this week."

Something new the Texans did.......which is probably something other NFL defenses have been doing for years.

Brady probably saw it once and knew exactly how to counter it.

I hate that he said it out loud and to the media.

That being said, once you're caught cheating, you'll always be suspected of cheating.

damn it anthony, when did you join our squad

lol seriously though, its embarrassing. Smith, you do realize you just basically CONFIRMED what Ed Reed said before he was cut. Wade makes no adjustments and teams know how to beat us. And don't give me that crap about some new "wrinkle" they added.....bottom line is, we sent the house over and over in the 2nd half and Brady lit us up, I WILL NEVER understand why we blitz and leave our terrible corners one on one over and over again when we play good qbs.....:boogereater:

I agree this is embarrassing for Smith and the Texans, but it's not like Smith is a rookie. He's been playing for quite a few years now.

He can't be talking about typical adjustments you see every game. He saw SOMETHING. Doesn't mean it's cheating, but this isn't his first NFL season.

I'm honestly curious what he's talking about.

Smith has always been a bit mouthy and likes to be quotable.

Put it down to Smith being Smith more than anything.

This is what people wanted, wasn't it? Rock bottom? Losing out?

I for one don't want the drama. Instead, losing leads to drama and embarrassment, and it severely impacts our reputation around the league as a classy, smart organization that does things properly.

But hey, you wanted the dumpster fire and you have a dumpster fire.

What a joke. I ****ing hate rooting for this team now. All the drama and distraction is unbearable. If I wanted that, I'd have become a Browns, Eagles, or Raiders fan. Shut the **** up and take your loss like a man, you ***** ass *****.

Something new doesn't mean it's something better.

The fact that the refs didn't flag Antonio for his standard off sides means the refs were in mcnairs pocket.

Pathetic. Further evidence of how soft this team is. Complete housecleaning is in order to get rid of the Smithiak stench that is emanating from Reliant. We are the laughingstock of the NFL. I would be fine with just JJ and Andre sticking around and getting rid of literally EVERYONE ELSE.

Yes, that is what we wanted. It is what we needed in order to become a better team that has a chance to win a SB one day.

I for one don't want the drama. Instead, losing leads to drama and embarrassment, and it severely impacts our reputation around the league as a classy, smart organization that does things properly.

Lol! What dream world have you been living in all this time? You actually think that fans around the country think of the Texans as a smart organization that does things properly? Our reputation has been garbage ever since the Capers era and it got a lot worse under Kubiak. Fans have looked at this organization as a joke for years. Sad, but true.

But hey, you wanted the dumpster fire and you have a dumpster fire.

No we didn't. We wanted Kubiak gone years ago to avoid this situation while fans such as yourself cursed and hissed at anyone that would speak out against this regime. So please spare us with your hissy fits over this now, because YOU got what YOU wanted as a fan. We sure as hell didn't.

What a joke. I ****ing hate rooting for this team now. All the drama and distraction is unbearable. If I wanted that, I'd have become a Browns, Eagles, or Raiders fan. Shut the **** up and take your loss like a man, you ***** ass *****.

Again, you asked for this situation more then any other fan on this board that I can think if. You wanted Kubiak, well enjoy the state of this franchise. But stop acting like you were somehow duped. You knew what you were getting with Gary, and that's what you got.

I think you need to direct that first question to yourself. I am sure Peyton wanted to come to a stupid organization. As for the fans gonna have to call garbage on that as well. Our visiting fans the last couple years have almost conceded many games before they have been played and even the fans of good teams have been generally respectful expecting a hard fought game. It has been a far cry from the first 5-6 years.

I'm wondering where all this resentment for Antonio Smith is coming from. All he did was say something dumb. On the field, he's part of the solution, not the problem.

He's probably wrong, but screw the Patriots.

If nothing else, Smith was reminding people of Spygate. Good for him. Goodell slapped his friend Kraft on the hand. And never mind the tapes being destroyed before the "investigation" ran its course.

If it were any other team, Goodell would have thrown the book at them.

I interact with non-Texans fans way, WAY more than I interact with Texans fans and they all respected the hell out of our organization for the way we do things. To them, we were lovable losers to this point. They'd always feel bad for the way things always turn out for us, our odd ways of losing games, and they always wanted us to beat more hated teams like the Ravens and Patriots.

This year, however, they've started to hate our organization for how pathetic and embarrassing we are. With all the distractions and booing Schaub getting hurt and all of that, they've turned completely the other way. We're developing a reputation, and it's not a good one.

You can choose not to believe it, but it's true. It's not something provable, unfortunately. Just sharing my experiences as part of sports boards and discussions elsewhere.

I still don't get this whole "I wanted Kubiak here" thing. I've wanted Kubiak gone for ****ing years now. Just because I'm not a mouth-breathing idiot and I can discern where to assign blame for specific failings and don't spit repetitive fire about Kubiak doesn't mean I've wanted Kubiak here this whole time. I wanted him gone after 2010 at least. Maybe I have to go back through my posts and find them so that I can show people like you each and every ****ing time you bring up this idiocy about me wanting him here.

So. Exhausting.

EDIT: Ah hell, I did it. I went back and searched for all posts I've made with the term "Kubiak" in it. Here are all the ones that call for his firing, criticize him for decisions, blame him for the state of things, etc. It's time to settle this **** and silence this talking point against me once and for all.

Why on earth do you care what other fans think of the organization? Most teams that are disliked have one thing in common - they win.

Not sure how to take you as a Houston fan... Afterall, your username is a tribute to a basketball player who never played for the Rockets. I get the feeling that you simply chose the Texans as "your team", and now us real houston fans are stuck with you. Maybe you should find a "likeable team who does things the right way"..

I'm sorry. Does it say in my contract that I have to be a fan of all Houston sports teams if I'm a fan of the Houston Texans? I was born and raised in Central California and my favorite teams in all four sports are spread across the entire country.

And I care about how the organizations I root for are recognized because I want the Texans to become a model franchise, like the St. Louis Cardinals, the Packers, the Braves, etc. You know, like most successful franchises. A picture of stability, class, and tradition. Not a collection of drama, distraction and clown show bull****.

I've been a Texans fan from the beginning and that's never, ever changing because I love the team. I can't control what Houston sports fans are like. And I hate plenty of teams that don't win. The Mets, the Titans, the Jaguars, the Raiders, the Dodgers, the Flyers are just a few of many. There are plenty of reasons to hate teams. Thinking you can only hate a team because they win is a ridiculous, ridiculous notion.

I have no issue with Smith saying this. You have to understand...this whole 'making adjustments' is something new to him. He's never seen it before so the fact that coaches are capable of this confuses him. It's mind boggling and something so unfamiliar that he simply thinks the Patriots are cheating. Can't blame him for not understanding something so foreign for him.

Though seriously, this isn't something he should have bothered saying. This team seems to say the most ridiculous things lately. Or I guess we could say that they tend to say the most wishy washy things.

Belichick has spies in every organization. The only difference is a few teams know who those spies are and regularly feed them just enough wrong information for the Pats to occasionally lose.

Cheat, not cheat, who cares Texans still have 10 losses in a row.

Belly and Brady could have told the defense what they are running, where the ball is going to go and how it was going to get there and the Texans STILL would have lost...

It is simply embarrassing for any member of this team to talk to the media much less impose there is some sort of conspiracy during a 10 game losing streak...

I don't really care what Smith said. What I do care about is watching him, Mercilus and Reed play patty cake with one on ones while Watt is being doubled.

Do you guys seriously think that 10 year vet, Antonio Smith, doesnt know what "halftime adjustments" are? A guy who has been around Ken Wisenhunt, and Wade Phillips and even had a Super Bowl run. Something obviously doesnt sit well with how the Pats played them yesterday.

His re-signing should be less than what he's making now, but he's still very good at his position. His temper is his biggest fault, but he's not a penalty machine.

he will sign for less... but, it won't be with the texans.

houston needs to get its salary cap in order for 2015.

Because assuming the worst about your players allows you to laugh at them, which separates your ego from your losing team. When the team starts winning, you can associate your ego again and defend any action or statement made by those players. This basically sums up the schitzophrenic loyalty of football fans.

From ProFootballFocus' recap of the Patriots game...
Game Notes (https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/12/02/refo-patriots-texans-week-13/)

-Last season, the Texans blitzed Brady 54 percent of the time in their two meetings with Brady completing 27-of-41 passes for 375 yards, six touchdowns and a +6.1 PFF Rating. On Sunday, Houston changed it up and blitzed only 38 percent of the time but Brady still torched with going 10-of-15 for 171 yards and a +2.8 PFF Grade.

Perhaps this gives indication of the big change Smiff was talking about?

Some folks are joking when they say it (myself included) so don't look that much into it. We know he understands adjustments. At this point after losing ten in a row some of us are simply numb to it and aren't taking it so seriously to leap off buildings. Just keep moving on really.

From ProFootballFocus' recap of the Patriots game...

Possibly but I think it's more about him having so much faith in his teammates. Yes, they tried to change it up and do the formula some past teams did by pushing to get to Brady with just four and falling back into coverage. Problem he fails to realize it takes these type of adjustments and personnel and we don't have the personnel.

He should have waited to watch the tape. The victims were guys who usually struggle in coverage, a rookie and a guy playing partially injured (Jackson). Only Joseph really held his own. They picked on Sharpton, Mays, Swearinger, and Jackson. I can't really find issue in a hall of fame QB and coach finding ways to exploit that list along with McCain and Keo being back there.

Think Smith should have just taken the loss, hit the film room and get back to work. Just wasn't a comment he needed to say but oh well.

I doubt they cheated, but there is an answer for that question. The Texans were 12-4 last year and the Patriots have lost players as well as us. The game was in Houston &, bad as the Texans have been, it had a little upset written on it. Belicheck was well aware of all of this. Look at the talent level and little difference between teams in the NFL, any given Sunday and all that. Add to all of that the fact that, let's face it, this was the Texans big game they were most excited about playing or "Superbowl" for the year. We may not like to admit it, but coaches, players, & fans would just love to make a statement (at least about not being sooooooooo bad this year) by pulling off a win against the Patriots. It would also be some (albeit too little) revenge for that last playoff game. We all know it's just one game in a losing season, but let's face it, we would've loved to have beaten them. This plays into the energy players put on the field as well. I don't think I saw one player half-@$$in' it yesterday, when I've been seeing it most of the season.

Patriots are playing for HFA. If you're Belicheck, do you wanna risk losing to the likes of us right now?

Having said all of that, I doubt there was cheating. He's probably more honest about it now than anybody, after having been embarrassed.

Brady... (http://www.csnne.com/blog/patriots-talk/brady-belichick-react-spying-accusations)
"You know, truthfully, we just played a little bit better in the second half," Brady said. "We've kind of been through a lot of this before. I don't really think much of it, truthfully. I just kind of have moved on, I've already started work on the Cleveland Browns, trying to find a way to play those guys better and get off to a better start."

"If you have like a bad first drive," Brady said, "you don't really come over to the sideline and go, 'All right guys, we've gotta change everything, let's scrap all the crap we've been practicing all week and just start making stuff up on the fly.'

"But I think by halftime you have really a good enough sample size to figure out how the game is being played, the things, the matchups that go in our favor, the matchups that don't go in our favor. Maybe there's some new things that they've done that we've got to adjust to, but ultimately, after halftime you get a chance to evaluate and say, 'Well, how did that half play out?'

"You've got to be able to stick with it, stick with what we're doing, kind of what we did against Denver. Or last week, we said, 'OK, these are some of the things we're going to get to and these are the matchups we like, and we've got to start making the plays that we're capable of making.' "

...and Belichick respond: (http://www.csnne.com/blog/patriots-talk/brady-belichick-react-spying-accusations)
"Yeah, I saw them," he said. "I don't have any comment on them. That's a league matter."

ESPN (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10070974/houston-texans-antonio-smith-says-comments-new-england-patriots-not-serious-matter)

HOUSTON -- Antonio Smith said Monday that his comments about being suspicious of the New England Patriots' knowledge of the Texans' defense were taken more seriously than he intended.

"Though it may be something I was curious about that kind of didn't seem right, like 'How all of a sudden the change here?', it wasn't a serious matter to where I was thinking, 'Aw man, they're spying on us, they're cheating,' things like that to the point where it gets to a big story about me accusing them of cheating," Smith said. "It's me being me."

Sapp and crew showed what I've witnessed all season. Smith and have been getting crushed and collapsed all season. Go look at that broken smith walk in td. Mitchell and Ninja were collapsed to the point they were on the side by jj. They should've traded or cut him this off season vs paying him 9m. They would've saved 6m and could've used that to get dummervill and kicked reed inside.

The joke's on us.

“It tickles me how much the country loves the Patriots so much they take everything so seriously,” Smith said tonight after the Texans’ walk-through. “I wasn’t angry or serious and I didn’t say that’s why they beat us.”

After the Patriots rallied from a 17-7 halftime deficit to score on five consecutive series in the second half, Smith said it was “highly suspicious” the way the Patriots adjusted to some things the Texans were doing for the first time.

Smith’s comments about the Patriots and Bill Belichick created a controversy around the NFL.

“I was definitely surprised,” he said. “I didn’t think anything else about it after we talked until I woke up this morning and everybody wanted to kill me on Instagram.

“My teammates were telling me about ESPN. I don’t really watch ESPN that much, but they (teammates) pretty much got a good laugh out of it, me being the butt of everybody’s jokes today. I had no idea it would have that (kind of) effect.”

While Smith was being interviewed by reporters, his cell phone rang. He answered and said, “Hey, Belichick, I know. G-15 classified.”

Smith said the media took him too seriously.

“I said it, but you have to check the manner in which I said it,” he said. “I didn’t accuse them of beating us with cheating. Come on, don’t you have a sense of humor? Though it may be something I was curious about it, I wasn’t thinking they spied on us or they were cheating.

“Half the stuff I say is spontaneous and witty, and I don’t think anything else about it. I’m sorry I said the word spying. I was joking and having fun with it.”

Mediots can't wait to scream "fire" in a crowded theatre. They love, LOVE, to bash Belichick every chance they get.

While I love the fact that this guy is our coach, and I have yelled at the TV more than once "yeah, Bill, give 'em nothing!" during his pressers, I think he brings it on himself. There's a bunch of angry dweebs out there that can't wait to bury this guy for every time he says "we need to play better in all three phases of the game."

Or I guess we could say that they tend to say the most wishy washy things.

my understanding after listening to 610 AM last night was that this started at the start of the game before halftime.

Belichick plays jedi mind games with the media. His chosen demeanor of droll and dry cracks me up, because we see NFL Films do behind the scenes stuff about him (like that two part "A Football Life") and he's nothing like his media persona.

I love it. The league needs dynasties, regardless of what opposing fans think, and the Patriots have been excellent at showing everyone that a dynasty can be established and maintained in this day and age.

And I dig that all of his players adopt his work ethic on the field and his business-like attitude with the media. They never feed the beast. They ARE a beast. Much respect. Wish we could have some of that! ;)
