View Full Version : Can somebody please explain to me...can't pick up a blitz

...why we suck so bad against the blitz this year? Is it just because our offensive line stinks, or that we have RB injury issues? Is it that simple, or are there other reasons?

EllisUnit

because we have a bad head coach with an outdated offense.

absolutely no offensive adjustment to teams blitzing case.

No draw plays to kill the blitz
no bubble screens to wrs
no screens to rbs
no short slants

This coaching staff has always had trouble with in game adjustments.

This offense has always struggled in the second half scoring dating back to last year.

Case has played great so far this season with everything stacked against him. You give schaub 7 years of mediocrity yet you cant even give keenum who has put up great numbers 5 games before you pull him.

SHAMELESS AND DISGUSTING.

I agree with this, the coaches do nothing to help the QB with the blitz, they call screens at the wrong time, they call draws at the wrong time, they empty the back field with no RB at the wrong time.

Can somebody please explain to me...

Why Matt McGloin has 3 passing TDs against our defense.

Or what a "McGloin" is? (I thought he was a character in Gangs of New York? (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0217505/))

The burning question is: Has McNair seen enough of this clusterbuck to make wholesale changes when the season is over?

He has to realize that his team is the laughingstock of the NFL.

If that debacle in the red zone at the end of the game doesn't result in McNair's head exploding then he is as much the problem as anyone.

I gotta throw in the the O-line has SUCKED all year. Also, Keenum, while I'm rooting for him, is not dealing with the blitz well at all and that's why they keep doing it excessively against him (that, & the O-line is a freaking turnstyle). He can't hit the hot receiver on the short route accurately, & I think he doesn't see him soon enough either. This is something he might improve on a lot in the future....or not....I don't know.

Schaub does that far better than Keenum, but we all know he isn't the answer.

We might need a NEW QB, along with a heart and a head coach.

I'm going to find the pink soap, or blue, or whatever.

You got a inconsistent offensive line (Newton is straight killing them on too many plays), our best pass protecting RB is out for the season and the best TE is out.

Plus this maybe just venom from the recent loss but I question some of the play calling being so predictable the defense knows what is coming and can out work our linemen.

How do you call for a draw play when the D has been blitzing progressively more the whole game & getting most of the pressure right up the middle? Actually, that's not even predictuable; it's just STUPID.

Being bad against the blitz is a small symptom if the greater problem which is kubiak and quite possibly an owner depending on how he handles this.

i mean just look at the play where they pull the runing back away from the back field and put him all the way to the sideline,

WTH IS THAT?

WTH IS THAT?

I agree, that is just stupid. It should be used rarely when you are going to have a play where you want to flood downfield with receivers. The Texans are using it a good percentage of the time. :scarygirl::scarygirl:

If McNair doesn't see what has transpired here, I'm not sure what to think or what I am going to do. If he approaches this as something that is mendable with this current regime, I may just call it quits on this team.

I love my Texans, I am a diehard fan, truly. But I am not down for watching a failing organization fail year after year. If McNair doesn't see what is happening now, in this epic meltdown that we just witnessed, then he truly will never have a successful franchise. He'd have to get lucky.

But I don't think that is the case. I think everyone and their mom just saw this as what it truly was, a coaching/player meltdown. The end of the road. The end for this current regime.

Did the last 3 weeks make this board lose its collective memory about Schaub's response to blitzes?

Also the Raiders didn't blitz Schaub, there was absolutely no need, he's simply not good enough to win.

How about calling a reverse, some screens or getting better blockers?

You had a banged up Ben Tate (who was never great at pass blocking when at his best) in there mostly and a small framed undrafted rookie in there as your primary RBs. Karim isn't doing JACK in special teams, he at least 10 lbs on Johnson, why not have him in on plays you know will require pass blocking?

We've kept Andrew Gardner on this team for almost 3 seasons, WHY when he hasn't sniffed at challenging anyone for a first or second string? How do we have Garrett Graham (13) a good but not special TE and Keyshawn Martin (5) who over his 2 seasons has actually dropped half the balls thrown his way have more targets then your young talented and promising 2nd WR Hopkins (2)?

As bad as the blitzing was and as bad our protection has been, we were out coached in the second half like we've been all season long and the coaches job is to fix problems when they are obvious trends. Guys failing to pick up the blitz is a obvious trend.

The O-Line sucks.
The backs and TEs are terrible blockers.
Keenum can't read a defense.
Schaub is a statue.
Our receivers are not burners and need time to create separation.

Add it all together are you're going to have a bad time.

On Keenum's INT Wade Smith got blown up and his man hit Keenum pretty much as he was throwing.

On one sack Brooks blew his assignment - Brooks didn't block anyone , shifted to the other side of the line away from the pressure.

On the other sack , Newton & Tate both missed assignments - Newton took the inside guy , Tate didn't block anyone tho his assignment should have been the inside guy and Newton the widest defender.

There were numerous other blown blocking assignments and other instances of guys getting beat - Particularly Newton.

It's pretty bad when that post is the only one that even attempts to give a legitimate answer as to why they don't do well against the blitz. Keenum's inability to find the hot receiver is the reason why opposing defenses are pinning their ears back. Schaub is done, and I love Keenum, and his ability to extend plays. I do think he's the QB that will take us places, but he's got plenty more learning to do.

I honestly hate to say this, but I think Gary set up Case to
fail to bring in Schaub.. Really, some of those play calls were
just head scratchers.

After 3 weeks this offensive coaching staff hasn't created
any plays to beat a blitz with keenum and all of his athleticism?

I just don't see it. Keenum was nails with RB and WR screens in
college -- has he forgotten how to throw them in the pros?
(I sure doubt it..)

this team had trouble picking up blitzes last year so it's def not on the qb.

we used to talk about teams blitzing the **** out of schaub and people were content it was on schaub. now it's the same problem with a more athletic qb.

use the blitzes to your advantage. quick slants/screens whatever.

5-7 step drop plays that need time to develop with a ****ty o-line is a recipe for disaster no matter who the qb is.

it actually works the other way around......teams usually dont blitz the hell out of the good to elite qbs b/c they'll make them pay...look no further than the 2 patriots games and the gb game last year where wade continued to try to blitz Rodgers and Brady...we got surgically disected...

Conversly, young inexperienced qbs, and just flat out bad qbs they tend to blitz more. They didnt blitz Schaub too much b/c Schaub knows how to deal with that relatively well under normal down and distance situations....he tends to stink it up when the down and distance is not normal..plus they can get to him without blitzing too much b/c he doesnt move all that well....especially with the garbage we call an o-line.

Good post...the other thing people arent taking into account is that lots of times on blitzes, the qb is responsible for a guy as well in the sense that u know you dont have enough guys kept back in for protection so you as the qb have to make sure you get the ball out and you slide away from that guy who's gonna be coming in free...

.its a collective effort by everyone the line, coach and qb...all 3 fail at various times throughout the game.

Case Keenum QBR = 73.3

Nothing peachy either way, but you're right. Like I've said all along, Case simply needs to just settle down instead of waiting for the long ball to develop (when he has an O-Line and good play calls, that is). Otherwise, no, he did nothing deserved to be pulled. It was a chickensh!it move by Kubiak t save his own bacon.

But you are right , Keenum has failed to recognize who that free guy is quite a few times but he is in essence a rookie and that's almost expected. Yes , he knows the offense but that's only part of what he has to know , the other part is how to respond to what defenses throw at him. Blitzes have been his kryptonite.

You guys see only what you want to see..he's avoided alot of sacks, but he's taken some terrible ones too....

..& ok, so he hasnt thrown but 1 int in his starts....what he has done though is fumble the ball at least once in every game he's started.

And up to this particular point, this is his 2nd straight game his TO early has led to pts for the opposition.

So Yeah he's not throwing ints, but he's turning the ball over all the same and helping the opposition put points on the board like schaub was.

And just as easily as you can blame fat randy for his choke job or the o-line for being leaky, or the defense for being..........garbage, you can blame Keenum for the last 2 losses. You cant bring up the fact that he's lost all his starts by 7 or less points and then gloss over Keenum's key fumbles that have directly or indirectly contributed to the opposition's point totals.

Im not bringing this stuff up in defense of schaub, but lets look at the macro view of things, not the micro.

The rams have been waiting for years for sam bradford to show improvement over the potential he showed in his rookie year. Ditto for Cam Newton and the panthers and Jay Cutler for the bears. All these guys were winners in college & put up great stats..its simply not written in stone that he'll improve beyond what he is now. Hell, if you go by trend, he's actually regressing; 2nd straight game where he hasnt played well.

& I never said we should've played schaub...only that we need to be looking at qb in the upcoming draft regardless of what keenum does. Keenum should not just be given the job next year and we shouldn't operate under the assumption that keenum is certain to improve next year either.

Especially since its likely we'll have a different HC who'll almost assuredly be running a different offense. Draft someone with a real shot to start and open it up for competition. If keenum wins fine...

That's the problem right there. Kubes doesn't have the luxury of playing for next year (like Keenum does). While we all want Keenum to stay in there, win or lose, so he can learn the game while we assess what we got in him... Kubiak doesn't have that luxury. He needs to win NOW to save his ass.

texans really need to see what they have in keenum, and gary is impeding that.

there is nothing gary can do to save his job. he will only continue to hurt the franchise with these foolish, short sighted decisions.. ironically the kind of decisions that got us in this pickle to begin with.

Honestly, I don't remember a QB being judged so harshly in his 4th start.

If we drafted this kid in April and he was playing like he has, we would be VERY satisfied. But because we didn't invest a draft pick on him, we want to make a final judgement 4 games in?

There is a weird psychology going around with Keenum. Even those that don't think he is the next QB are strangely passionate and arrogant about it, as if it is less about football and more about being a troll for those rooting for him.

He's 4 games in!!

We can't draft until June so there is no need to make that decision this week. Play Keenum and make a decision in the off-season.

Personally, I believe in Keenum, I want to see what he has to offer. But I am worried that he will get shell-shocked with this amazing lack of time and always play with happy feet ala Carr.

This. I think the Chronicle had a comparison of the first 3 starts of Keenum and a bunch of other players. Keenum compared well against Manning, Luck etc.

That doesn't mean that Keenum is the second coming, but it does mean that we need to continue to evaluate before we start drafting someone else.
