The Houston Texans signed linebacker D.J. Smith after working him out as well as linebackers Gary Guyton and Tim Shaw.

Smith played collegiately at Appalachian State.

The Texans also signed rookie free safety Jawanza Starling (USC) off of the New York Giants' practice squad.

The Texans signed cornerback Loyce Means (Houston) and wide receiver Rico Richardson (Jackson State) to their practice squad.

Wide receiver Andy Cruse was placed on the practice squad-injured list with a left hamstring injury.

is there something you can tell me about those players?

I can't follow college football from here so I don't know anything about the rookies.

I think some of the mockers liked Starling if I remember correctly.

D.J. Smith; LINK (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/6690/dj-smith)
The 24-year-old has a history of knee problems. The Texans are banged up at inside 'backer, with Joe Mays and Darryl Sharpton battling injuries.

Gary Guyton; LINK (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/5012/gary-guyton)
Titans released LB Gary Guyton and waived DT Nigel Nicholas.
Guyton signed just over three weeks into training camp and had to learn Jerry Gray's defense on the fly. He's a known commodity on the workout circuit.

Tim Shaw; LINK (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/4408/tim-shaw)
Shaw is an excellent special teamer and should resurface. The Titans were trying to convert Solomon from defensive end to strong-side linebacker.

Jawanza Starling - use to be with us PS, Giants signed him from us.; LINK (http://www.bigblueview.com/2013/9/2/4686052/new-york-giants-practice-squad-2013-s-jawanza-starling-signed-to-final-spot)
Starling, 6-foot, 206 pounds, is an undrafted free agent from USC. He made five tackles in four games for the Texans during preseason. He played 93 preseason snaps for Houston and Pro Football Focus gave him a +1.4 overall score for his work.

The Giants are carrying only three safeties on their 53-man roster -- Antrel Rolle, Ryan Munday and rookie Cooper Taylor -- and Starling is the only safety on the practice squad.

The pre-2013 NFL Draft scouting report on Starling from Draft Insider, which called him a "physically gifted safety with average football skills," ended up hitting the nail on the head. It read:

Starling looks the part but has not fully transitioned his athletic skills onto the field. He offers potential at free or strong safety and is a developmental prospect who should get consideration on a practice squad.

Loyce Means; LINK (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/7108/loyce-means)
Means is a 24-year-old burner out of Houston. The Packers were pleased with his training camp performance and hope to keep him on the practice squad.

Rico Richardson; Draft LINK (http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=95457&draftyear=2013&genpos=WR)
Rico Richardson, WR (5-11 , 167 pounds) - Richardson proved impressive enough to earn an invite to the Super Regionals in Dallas. He ran a time of 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash and recorded a 35-inch vertical jump and 10-foot-1 broad jump. He ran a 4.12 short shuttle and 6.77 in the cone drill. Richardson recorded 12 bench presses and worked out as a wide receiver. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com

I don't believe starling was ever on our ps.

But he was with us in camp.

I liked him and had him on my final roster based in how he played in that final pre season game. Hopefully he gets a chance to play some special teams. We could use a boost of athleticism.

Reading up on some of the other guys I'm actually excited to see what they can do. Only thing is that it's unlikely kubiak lets them play.

He played decently in the preseason, but he was terrible during the draft process and wasn't all that great in college. If I remember correctly, either Deion or Mayock described his footwork during the combine as "horrible." He's always been a great athlete though.

"...is a 24-year old burner..."

If we were gonna keep burners, we could still have Cierre Wood. :fingergun:

you have to admit tho that the best burner of all has to be Schaub

Shaw and Starling are the 2 of the most interest just because ST is garbage and we need help at Safety. I think you'd have to go out of your way to play any worse than Ed.
