View Full Version : Jaguars might be worst team in history

Don't say the Jacksonville Jaguars are starting from scratch, because that's an insult to a team of the same name that actually did start from scratch.

Chances are, those 1995 Jaguars would beat this bunch, which is quite possibly the worst team in NFL history.

Jacksonville has lost it first seven games by an average of nearly 21 points double-figure margins in all of them, and a differential of epic proportions if it holds up over a full season.

According to STATS LLC, the only team to fare worse was something known as a Chi-Pit Cards-Steelers, a 1944 amalgamation of two franchises that didn't enough players to field teams of their own because of World War II. They went 0-10, losing by an average margin of 22 points.

The Jaguars can't blame a war for their problems.

They've done this all by themselves.

Bad trades. Horrendous draft picks. Ill-advised signings.

Throw it together, and you're left with a franchise that doesn't even stack up to the expansion team I covered back in '95.

Those Jaguars, as expected, weren't very good. But they went 4-12, a record this group would be thrilled to achieve, and established the framework for a surprising run to the AFC championship game the very next year. That team's quarterback was a young Mark Brunell, who would go on to a long career in the league. These Jags have Blaine Gabbert, who looks like something out of "The Walking Dead."

There's no chance of Jacksonville making the playoffs this year or next. Team officials have made it clear this is merely the start of a total makeover that will take a minimum of three seasons to complete.

Rest assured, Gabbert will not be part of that plan. The 10th overall pick in the 2011 draft has already proven to be a colossal bust, his one touchdown pass this season countered by seven interceptions. Too bad he can't count the TDs the other teams scores; three of his picks have been returned to the Jacksonville end zone.

Journeyman Chad Henne isn't much better, but he'll start Sunday in London when the Jaguars take what is likely to be their eighth straight whipping at the hands of defending NFC champion San Francisco.

As if all that eavesdropping wasn't bad enough, now we're about to impose the Jaguars on one of our European allies.

Yikes.

"Obviously, if you're a Jaguars fan, you want to do better," team owner Shad Khan told The Florida Times-Union in Britain this week. "But we know the process we started, which is pretty much starting from the ground up, cleaning house and doing something we probably should have started earlier."

Rubbing salt in the wounds, the Web site PredictionMachine.com recently ran a series of simulated games between the current and expansion Jaguars, which found the '95 squad won more than 60 percent of the time by an average score of 19-14.

At least that's more competitive than the present-day Jaguars have been this season. They've led for a grand total of 22 minutes, 14 seconds not even one half of one game, and never by more than seven points.

Cloak,

It could happen. Just like I called the Rams game a trap game, it's possible that the Jags could be a trap as well.

Losing at least one of our Jags game would not shock me - sadly.

I seem to remember a just-as-bad 2012 Jags team that dropped almost 40 on us last year in our own house and took us to OT.

Yep. Happened a few weeks ago with the Rams and Texans.

I wouldn't sleep on the Jags if I were this fan base. Any Given Sunday, and all that...

Trust me, The Texans can play like complete poo and still hang 20 points on the Jags. I have never seen a professional football team this bad! 3 years of sitting through blow outs at home has worned me out. I don't even get mad anymore, when they get creamed. It's historical! 0-16 here we come! :kitten::kitten::kitten:

At this point, I think losing out the rest of the season is the Texans' best way to go. Draft picks are more important than victories over crappy teams. Lose out, clean house, have good draft picks for the new regime to make their mark.

Big picture, yeah, good points to rebuild for the future (assuming our owner agrees, which is uncertain at this point).

Little picture...I just can't root for them to lose, much less get swept by the kitties.

If I'm so depressed (or whatever) by the Texans to the point I actually want them to lose, I just won't watch the game. I can't root for them to lose, I want them to win every game. If I didn't feel that way, I wouldn't watch.

That doesn't mean I expect them to win, it just means I WANT them to win. There's a huge difference there.

I feel the same way. Honestly, the only thing that has given me any anticipation for games now is to see what Case Keenum is about.

And while I would never want them to lose, at this point in the 2013 season, I'm not going to be upset when they do. It is "that" kind of season, reminiscent of 2005 and 2010. It's best to just numb yourself for a few months, expect nothing and you won't be disappointed.

I thought the 0-16 Lions were the worst team I had ever seen, and I saw the get destroyed by the Titans on Thanksgiving where fans were openly rooting for 0-16, simply because they felt it was the only way Matt Millen would get fired. (they were right)

In this case, its worse. The Lions at least have a fanbase and franchise cornerstones, even then. I can't name one player on the Jags I'd want on my team. Not one. Its crazy bad. The niners stopped playing hard to be nice, and every team's that played the Jags has had to let up on the gas to not embarrass them, even though I'm convinced every opponent could have posted 50+ on them.

The sad thing is the Jags look like they are trying too. They simply have NO talent.

The funny thing is, I live between 2 NFL cities and both are a combined 0-15. The Bucs picked the wrong time to be this dysfunctional because as bad as they are they are not Jags bad.

It would be crazy if both ended up 0-16. Both teams need a QB, however I think the Bucs can be a quick turn around since they have talent on both sides. They just need to get rid of Rutgers Hitler and land a QB.

Although that would never happen I could see some division realignment if Jacksonville does move out to LA.

Basically I would see the LA Jags moving to the AFC West, and then Kansas City moves to the AFC South, and it could have more of a midwest feel, with Indy, Kansas City, Tennessee, and Houston.

I think it would be close but not identical. I say the LA Jags take LA's first NFL team's division spot. Jags and Rams switch divisions and conferences. Jags to NFC West and Rams to AFC South. This would give California two AFC and two NFC teams (one per conference in southern and northern California), which would make FOX very happy. The Chiefs have very strong rivalries with the Raiders and Broncos that I think the NFL would want to preserve. Rams-Niners used to be great but I just don't think it's been the same since the team went to St. Louis. No one has a traditional rivalry with the Cardinals, and the Seahawks flipped conferences themselves.

I think that could work too. The only factor is which team would actually be willing to move to a new conference.

The 2008 Lions were worse than the 83-83 Oilers. I remember that team, and it at least had a feel that the worst was over. The Lions had fans openly rooting for 0-16 as the only solution to convince ownership to turf the worst GM in NFL history - Matt Millen.

That's why I laugh everytime I see Millen offer advice on TV, why on earth would anyone listen to this guy that knows anything about football?

It's looking close, at least in the relatively modern era, but at least in terms of the ratio of points scored to points surrendered, the 1976 Bucs are still a little worse (the 2013 Jags to date have scored 0.326 points per point they've given up; the 1976 Bucs only scored 0.303 points per point surrendered).

Other notable awful teams, such as the 2008 Lions (0-16) and the 1980 "Aints" both scored at least half as many points as they gave up.

That said, one can make a strong case that the 2013 Jags are a bigger embarrassment than the 1976 Bucs because they are not a first-year expansion team.
