That's right... I'm still a believer! I'm tired of all the negative posts around here. Call me an optimist, a sunshine pumper, naive, stupid, idiotic... I don't care! I still believe we can win it all, regardless of who our QB is.

I see an offense that can move against the league's best defenses, a defense that can dominate, and a special teams that can... (ok, I won't get carried away with the optimism). We are losing because of mental mistakes, not because the other team is better or more talented. Mistakes can be fixed!

The 2010 Packers started off 3-3, the 2011 Giants started off 6-6, and we all know how their season's ended.

So chime in if you still believe! I can't be the only one.

I believe we'll win the AFC South.

I believe we'll be in the AFC Championship game.

I believe Matt will throw a pick 6 on the first passing play of the game & the Texans will not be able to recover.

I believe in Schaub. If he can shred the Seattle #1 defense to take the texans to 20-3 at halftime, then He can do anything. He is just going through a rough patch. I hope we win the superbowl and make all the haters look dumb.

I'm in.

They aren't really out of it and again...stranger things have happened in the NFL than some 2-3 team simply turning it around.

Does it seem unlikely? Yes. With the schedule they have making the playoffs seem like a tall mountain to climb...but I think it's still very much possible.

They'll make the playoffs (if schaub is benched now) and then these last three weeks won't even matter.

Well that explains why he's so immobile and has a "noodle arm" on game day. He's too busy doing something that saps all his strength the night before! :shades:

Yes, that why he might not have 100% concentration sometimes.

Did you watch Moneyball, and remember the scene where scouts we discussing a player... And mentioned he had an ugly gf, which meant he lacked confidence. At least we know Schaub doesn't have a confidence issue. Haha.

Yes, I look at the bright side of everything.

(This may be the shortest thread in TT history!)

Problem is mental mistakes like u said, all week long before the SF u know that pick 6s were on Schaubs mind, and whata does he do his first pass of the game in SF. I dont think Schaub has the mental toughness to pull himself out of this slump honestly. And mgmt wont make a change, obviously so all we can do is hope Schaub doesnt continue to lose us games.

I believe I am a realist that can be a fan and see things as they are. I believe that my loyalty should be returned by management and players who do not treat me as a fool. I believe my free time is important and there are many things I can do with it, right Astros? I believe this season can turn around but I do not believe it will.

Believe? Sure you can believe we can turn things around. But Matt is like a $5 scratch-off. You keep trading in the ones that are worth $5 for another hoping to win the million dollars, but eventually you are left with a whole lotta scratch-off dust and nothing to show for it.

I'm pinning my hope on this:

Last year at this time, and for several weeks after, this team looked like the best team in the NFL. The whole town was buying into it, although it turned out that the team was never actually as good as it seemed.

I'm hoping that the opposite is true now.
Things look bad. Really bad.
My hope is that when the season is said and done, looking back, we will realize the Texans were never really as bad as they seemed in week 5.

The good thing is that the tough schedule will expose this team for what they are.

There are really not many cupcake games left. The two against the Jags.
Rams and Raiders are mediocre teams, not horrible teams you can walk in and just expect a automatic win against.

The rest of the games are against potential playoff teams. They either nut up, win enough to get into the playoffs and become that battle tested team that isn't as bad as it's record suggests...or they fold and lose most of their games any ways.

I had this team at 1 - 4 to start the season, then come on strong to end it... I'm one game up on my thoughts, but I can't say I'm feeling positive about that "coming on strong" to end the season... but there are many games to go, and anything can happen... count me in as a believer :)

Checking in! I believe that the Texans will recover if they win every game that is left on their schedule in the regular season. That should guarantee the #2 spot in the AFC as well.

If being "believer" means I think the Texans are going to do what they set out to do, go to the Super Bowl and possibly win it. God no. At this point I am not a believer they can get out of the AFC, let alone win the SB.

At this point I don't think they are a playoff team even though there is so much football yet to be played. Just being a realist.

Meh... I'm a believer.

Not just this season, but every season with the Texans but including going back to the Oilers.

I look at it this way......

2 of the 3 Texans losses were out of conference (which has nothing to do with tie-breakers). The only conference loss was out of division (and yes, it is a conference loss).

Right the ship!! That's it!!!!

And for the love of all that is Holy, this Sunday don't boo when Schaub throws the ball away for an incompletion. Boo when he makes a bone-headed play.

BTW for some of you people: Throwing the ball away is not necessarily a bone-headed play. Sometimes, that's a smart play.

Well he does have to throw the ball at or near the line of scrimmage which at times gets interesting with Mr. Schaub I love it when a smart QB throws the ball away, just get it there at least, and with some zip right outta bounds, not a sleepy feather just floating in the wind inside the field of play.

I believe we'll win the AFC South.

I believe we'll be in the AFC Championship game.

I believe Matt will throw a pick 6 on the first passing play of the game & the Texans will not be able to recover.

I believe you are going to owe me some $$$$.

I also believe 8 yrs are enough. Of course I wouldn't be in this situation because I would've fired Gary after 2010.

So start up with the stats and same old tired excuses. But this team is what it is and that's far from the SB contender that they were claiming themselves to be. In short the 2013 Houston Texans are a fraud. There I said it.

Let me give you a stat you can chew on since your a stat guy.

The Houston Texans are 4-7 in the last 11 games they've played. This yr they look like a team that is resting on its past laurels to me.

No need to start changing rules again. Only thing that matters now, are the next 11, not the last unless you like to wallow in misery.

A - I believe there to be some misery already being wallowed in
B - You are suggesting we don't use the immediate history as a litmus as to where we are at for a basis of where we should likely expect to be going? This logic is what got Obama elected a 2nd term. No surprise.. I knew Obama would get elected when I states only an idiot would vote him in for a 2nd term.
C - Rules? what rules would you be referring to? Oh, those rules that suggest that when a losing team ends the season on a hot streak that there be expectation that the team could carry that over to the next season? Ya, I think that rule has been around for ever... so are you actually suggesting that since THIS team ended the season with a hemorrhage, it's unfair to expect the bleeding to possibly continue?

Keepin it real.

I think Schaub's time as the Texans QB at an exceotable level is done.

However I love the way Matt and his wife have gone out of their way to help contribute to the community. They are really classy people (not that you would have a clue as to what class is) and I thank them for all of their efforts.

At the end of the day , the Texans performance is disappointing but not the end of the world . If it is , you live a charmed life if Schaub's pick 6s are the worst thing that's going on in your life .

My opinion of the football side is the QB and the coach of the future are not on the roster .

Reason for optimism (http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2013/10/rams-qa-with-vincent-verhei-of-football-outsiders-texans-notes/):

Any specific Football Outsiders stat observations on this matchup?

“Not a matchup comment, but an observation on Houston. Make no mistake, this has been a bad football team in 2013 – the only AFC teams worse in our rankings our Oakland and Jacksonville. But if they can find a way to turn things around, there’s reason to believe they can make a run. Houston’s schedule through five games has been the second-hardest in the league, behind only the Giants. However, from this point forward, they have one of the five easiest schedules in the league.”

Our record over the next 11 games won't be as telling as how we do against Denver, New England, Tennessee, & Indy.

Your options are:
1. Go to the games, be the home field monster you are, stand with
your boys, have fun- win or lose, (like we do in New Orleans) and
bring something positive. They might win. They might lose. The sun
still rises in Pasadena, and you have fun hanging with your red & blue
buds. Be a good example to your kids, and also show the rest of
America that Houston is a class place with great fans.

2. Go on a diet, start exercising 3 times a day, take some suppliments, sign
up for an Arena League team, practice getting your head knocked off by
300 lb men. Stay up day and night in film study, hire Bill Walsh to per-
sonally tutor you in fundementals--- and get out there and do better
yourself. You might win. You might lose.

3. Ditch Houston tradition, and become the new Philidelphia. Burn Jerseys,
stalk your players in their driveway, and do various tacky, negative
tantrums. You wont win, in fact this might even effect your future,
when free agency kicks in again, and no one wants to play for you, but
you'll feel better getting it out. Create a poisonous atmosphere,
and you will lose.

I believe we have a lot of talent. I don't know that we have a winning team though.

I'm having a hard time seeing how this team went from 12-4 last season with essentially the same roster to a team that can barely get out of its own way.

I have been a Kubiak supporter through thick and thin, but at this point I'm having a hard time defending his decision making. His playcalling has become downright stupid. We can't seem to throw it down the field. I would be fine with incompletions, because it sets you up for better runs and better mid range throws, but teams can essentially draw a line 25 yards from the LOS that they don't have to cross. It's like we think we're always in the red zone.

If Keenum comes in & we find out that there is a reason he's 3rd string, just like we found out there's a reason Tj is 2nd (well, we found out there's a reason he isn't starting).... what did change get us?

Matt's not Tom Brady & there's a pretty good chance Case Keenum isn't either. So we need to stop hoping Matt will start to play like those guys & expect our defense to not allow the St Louis Rams to score 17 points in the first half. Let's get some turnovers. Let's beat the St Louis Rams 9-3

They have. The Oilers were 1-4 at one point and rattlled off 11 wins. We won't go into what happened after that.

I think this team needs to look for a spark somewhere. Right now, Schaub is probably out for the KC game. I think Keenum maybe a spark. It's a gamble yes, but this team needs something different.

Totally get what you're saying here, but I bet they didn't look much better at the time that they were 1-4. I don't remember (even though I know I saw it & do remember the next 11 & playoffs), but I just bet. For instance, that D was good, but it didn't have JJ Watt or B. Cushing. That O-line was great, but it didn't have D. Brown or Myers getting to the second level. I know I don't even have to mention Foster. I think this team would be capable of making a turn-around like that, but QB is a big ????? right now.

I wouldn't bet money on him being the next Brady or anything, but I'd really like to see Keenum start. Schaub is injured & what we saw from Yates yesterday is just what we will get from Yates. Yates can make the short passes in the middle of the field (6 yard pass on 3rd & 10), but he can't make the big plays (whether its' a short TD pass or a long pass). When he tries to, we get what happened yesterday or what happened in the playoffs against the Ravens. Keenum doesn't need to be some sure-fire better-than-Schaub promise, because Schaub is injured anyway. He needs to get his shot. Maybe he will suck, but we already know Yates will.

I watched the whole game just to see if Yates could look even remotely like an NFL QB. He doesn't. I am not excited about next weeks game. I still hope they win out but highly doubt they reach 7-8 total wins. Now it's wait until the final nail is hammered in the coffin and look forward to the offseason. I want to believe they can turn it around. I do. I feel the Texans have the talent to be a top 6-8 team if they have slightly above average QB play. We are seeing a ton of mistakes that are not typical of Kubiak teams. Penalties and offensive turnovers are at all time high levels and defensive turnovers at all time lows. Without great QB play you can't overcome a lot of mistakes.

That noise got you negative national attention, and now some of your players are turning against you.

They're AWARE of the problems. The owner is going to do what he's going to

I vividly remember the headline in the Houston Chronicle at the 1-4 mark:

FROM CHOKE TO JOKE

This, of course, was just 8-9 months after the 35-3 debacle.

That team certainly had some resolve to keep fighting after such a historic meltdown and horrible start. Of course, Joe Montana sapped the remaining resolve at the end of that season, but it was fun while it lasted.

I wish I could believe in the Texans to make such a run, but I think this team's biggest weaknesses right now are at the most crucial positions: HC and QB. And there is absolutely nothing that makes me think either man has it in him to rally this team and inspire them to dig out of this hole.

The Pencil Neck
10-15-2013, 11:53 AM
People are talking about yardage not mattering.... well, point differentials don't matter, either. It's only 1 loss or 1 win and it doesn't matter how much you win or lose by unless you're in a tie-breaker situation and that's rarely used.

Right now, we're 2 games out of first place in our division.

That's it.

We're not 100 points down. We're 2 games out with 10 games to play. We still control our own destiny (because we've got 2 games against the Colts and 1 game against the Titans and if we win out and they win out except for the games against us, we win.)

I understand a lot of you were just waiting for a reason to get your panties in a bunch because you don't like Kubiak and you don't like Schaub and now that we're facing some adversity, this is a golden opportunity to vent some of that.

But this season isn't over and this team isn't that far away from being really good. Maybe Keenum can step up, maybe Yates can step up, maybe the rest of the team can stop getting stupid penalties and turning the ball over.

We've dug ourselves a hole now it's time to climb out of it.

I think we can win in KC. I think we can stop their offense given the fact it primarily revolves around Charles.

It all depends on what this thing we call an offense can muster up. I would hope Kubiak's comments about waiting until the end of the week to name the starter is bogus. If Schaub's out name the starter tomorrow if he hasn't already.

If we get a lead we have a chance. Watt and Co. can destroy this oline if we have a lead. If we get behind I don't see us beating their pass rush once they pin their ears back.

Which one's going to show up? Jekyll? Or Hyde?

Gonna make the Chiefs guess who's tossing underneath routes and squat routes. Make them prepare for the underneath route from short and tall QB's alike. He's just making sure that when the bullets start to fly, whatever you do, don't target AJ in the End Zone.

Chiefs had 10 sacks last week and have the best front7 in the NFL with a monster on the nose. This is gonna be brutal because we are going to play conservatively and the Chiefs won't have to defense the back end like they do other teams.

oh yeah, I'm a believer :doot:

I think we can win in KC. I think we can stop their offense given the fact it primarily revolves around Charles.

It all depends on what this thing we call an offense can muster up. I would hope Kubiak's comments about waiting until the end of the week to name the starter is bogus. If Schaub's out name the starter tomorrow if he hasn't already.

If we get a lead we have a chance. Watt and Co. can destroy this oline if we have a lead. If we get behind I don't see us beating their pass rush once they pin their ears back.

Which one's going to show up? Jekyll? Or Hyde?

After seeing the pics of the injury there is now way Schuab isn't out 3-6 weeks. None. His ankle did a freaking 180!!

He was running up & down the sideline after they re-taped it. I'm sure if it was up to him he'd have been in the game. If we had a shot at winning, Kubiak would have thrown him in.

Great point! If Yates would have brought them back 25 or 30 points and made it competitve, Kubes would have stuck Schaub back in.

People are talking about yardage not mattering.... well, point differentials don't matter, either. They certainly have an effect DURING the game when you have to change your Offensive playcalling. Granted Kubiak still ran the ball late on Sunday, but it wasn't in any attempt to actually win the game. He wanted it OVER.

Let me lay down a couple of stats that only a bad team can have. Texans and Jaguars only teams with three 21-point losses this season. Texans have one of the worst point differentials in the NFL at -71.

Yes, those are ugly stats. However, I do not think it is indicative of the talent level of the team- certainly it is in Jacksonville. When these things have happened to the Texans in the past, it has revealed talent deficits. I'm confident that is not true of this team. So, they could turn it around (I still believe they will) like the NYGiants did a few years ago, like Baltimore did last year... and others. Or, they could go down like San Diego did a couple years ago when they were among the leaders in offense and defense but finished with a losing record. We just have to watch it play out. I'm kind of excited about the drama unfolding. Looking forward to a bunch of important games in October and November. (I'm weird, I know)

Been on the wagon for a while now, I'll not be jumping off at all. Ever. Doesn't mean I'm not pissed off. Of course I've been pissed off since the 1960s so that doesn't mean a whole lot. :lol:Hey man, I'll
bet you and I have seen all the same Oilers games. You prob. saw the 72 & 73
seasons, where we won exactly one game each year. (bears, jets) Remember
how exciting it was when Sid Gillman came along for "Turnaround '74," as the
promoted it? We won SEVEN games! Back then, winning any game was
a reason to dance in the street.

Dont ever get tired of believing. Took 30 years of suffering, but I finally got
to celebrate on Bourbon St. It CAN happen.

Keep rocking Houston. You're about to pass up Chicago for America's #3 town. Dont forget your greatness.

man, that's a whole lotta Rosie. Teams run right up the middle this year since we don't have a run stopper on the nose and neither MLB next to Cushing can shed a block, Keo and washed up Ed Reed are our starting secondary next week. We have no edge rush to speak of even though we have JJ Watt taking triple teams. The offensive line has been average and we face the best front 7 in the NFL this weekend. If Schaub plays he will be even less mobile than usual and if he doesn't play the offense will feature either a back up QB or a guy who may be a good back up QB one day.

Does covering the spread have any bearing on who makes the playoffs? You mean like
cheering when you're QB is hurt?

That noise got you negative national attention, and now some of your players are turning against you.

They're AWARE of the problems. The owner is going to do what he's going to
do. It is in his best interest to win. He wants to win.

You're on game seven, people. You want your players to give 100% for 60 minutes, but you, yourselves want to quit at game seven.

Dust yourselves off, and get back on. Let your weaker ones jump off your
wagon now.

Just who the he** are you to tell me how to act or think, I dont care what the players think or BoB for that matter. If the team plays as badly as it has this entire season, or is totally unprepared then you can believe after 11 yrs they are going to hear my displearsure.

If that makes me a bad fan in your eyes, then I suggest you go----- yourself.

That's a totally different discussion. (And not particularly accurate, either*.)

The point differential of a game you won or lost doesn't make any difference except in possible tie-breakers. So right now, we're 2-4, the Titans are 3-3, and the Colts are 4-2.

And a lot of our "fans" have thrown in the towel and given up and are looking forward to the end of the Smithiak/Schaub era.

We may not come back. We may collapse and have an awful rest of this season. BUT. We might come back and we might win this division. This is WHY you should be a fan... to watch your team fight back into contention.

Your favorite Saints fan weighing in. (native Houstonian / grew up with the
Oilers. I am an expert on tough times.)

Depends on how good
YOU are.

Rickey Watters, Eagles, post game interview: (why didnt you lay out for
that pass in the middle?) answer: For Who For What?
Dont let this become YOUR players attitude toward you, the fan.

Its like yelling at a movie. You THINK you're helping things, but really, you're
not. Cmon. Act like Houston.

I'll take Option #1 for 500 Alex

I didn't believe last week, however, Case has given me a reason to believe. I don't know what it is, but I really really think we win this game.

If we don't, next week is going to suck.
