Wow cant believe there isnt a thread made for the coogs...

Anyways they arent looking very tough today vs Temple. Red Zone offense looks like a big concern. I like the rookie QB O Korn he looks pretty good for a rookie.

Speaking of a better picture, I just checked for a replay in the next 24 hours and just outside of that 24 they'll have a replay on FSSW at midnight Sunday night/Monday morning. I hope they'll show another broadcast later in the week at a better time.

Chron.com article on the game

The Cougars (3-0) won for the 29th time in 40 meetings in what could be the final Bayou Bucket for the foreseeable future.

With the Cougars ahead 31-13, Rice scored 13 quick points on a 1-yard touchdown run by Taylor McHargue and a 62-yard touchdown return on a blocked field-goal attempt with less than 2:30 remaining.

Chris Boswell, who missed a pair of long field goals, perfectly executed a reverse onside kick that the Owls recovered near midfield. The drive stalled when McHargue's fourth-and-4 pass fell incomplete.

UH had taken a commanding lead on a pair of touchdown passes by O'Korn – a 28-yarder to Deontay Greenberry late in the third quarter and a 32-yarder to Ryan Jackson to begin the fourth quarter.

The O'Korn-to-Greenberry connection was again dangerous for the Cougars.

Greenberry had his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game, finishing with six receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown.

O'Korn, who replaced injured starter David Piland, was 15-of-33 for 281 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

He briefly left the game in first half and was replaced by backup Greg Ward, who had nine carries for 80 yards.

After scoring a pair of first-quarter touchdowns, Rice went 10 consecutive possessions without scoring until Taylor McHargue scored on a 1-yard run with 10:52 left in the game.

The Cougars defense followed up its solid performance two weeks earlier against Temple, holding the Owls to 160 yards total offense after halftime.

Turner Petersen had five catches for 102 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the game, for the Owls.

The two rivals are not scheduled to play beyond this season with both now in different conferences.

I thought Coach Sumlin had some really nice things to say in regard to Keenum getting the nod this weekend.....

From chron.com (http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2013/10/case-keenum-to-start-sunday-against-chiefs/)

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin, who coached Keenum at UH, said of the news, “It’s really a neat situation for him. Here’s a guy who was an undrafted free agent who was coming off a sixth year of eligibility after a devastating knee injury. What a great story. It’s just a testament to his passion and his hard work and his demeanor – to work through all of those things and then be able to start his first NFL game after not even being on the active roster.

“Everybody has got an idea what a prototypical quarterback looks like. The way the game is played now they come in all sizes and there’s no doubt Case has always had the ability to play at a high level, and he was consistent (at UH) in doing so. You don’t set the NCAA (passing) record just by luck. He knows what he’s doing. He’s looking forward to this opportunity and I look for him to take full advantage of it.”

Sumlin said he had texted Keenum’s father congratulations, saying: “As a coach, when you have players like Case, you’re almost like a parent. You’re always rooting for them like they’re one of your kids. I’m just happy for his whole family. There’s probably not been a story of a guy who’s gone through what he’s gone through and to get to start in the NFL after not even having been activated.”

Sumlin choked up, then continued.

“He’s gone from sweats to starting,” he said, chuckling. “There’s a little bit of pressure involved in that.”

In today's era of no huddle offenses you might think its crazy but both teams actually played some defense yesterday. The way UH plays offense their defense is going to be on the field a lot so they are going to give up some yards and that's just the way it is. The thing defensively they can do is cause some turnovers and they have done that so far this year. UH was leading the nation in turnover ratio coming into this game.

BYU's defense was what the fans were basing their predictions of a huge win on so take that for what it's worth. This is the first Cougar loss this season, but we are lucky it's an OOC game. We hung tough with a team that completely stomped UT, so overall I think I have a positive feeling about this game. As weird as the QB situation has been this year, the Cougs have been doing pretty decently.

Its always been hard to recruit stud lineman to UH which is why they should always be in a 3-4 defense. It was retarded for Levine to try and switch to a 4-3 last year when they had finally recruited the personnel to run a 3-4 the last 2 years Sumlin was here.

Worst call I've seen in a long time. Complete bs. What made it even worse was the fact that it was reviewed and some flag football proponent in the booth called for ejection.

I guess hitting a player out of bounds 5 seconds after the end of the play is cool, though (as seen earlier in the game by UCF).

Good God, what a horrible call.

I hope the guy is ok. I know we all hate to see a player get hurt like that and all I can say is my best hopes and wishes go out to him.

I still say it was a bad call. I don't know how, in the moment of the play, he could have reacted much differently.

If Ronnie Lott played in these conditions he would never have smelled Canton, Ohio.

I logged on here just to comment on this.. flipped over from the Texas game (oh the horror)..

Umm.. WhyTF was that player ejected? That was a CLEAN HIT! What the hell is this game turning into. He didn't target OR hit him in the head.. he hit him square in the damn chest which is what you're TAUGHT to do. Just because a player goes down a player has to be ejected? complete B.S. This is football, newsflash.. people are going to get hurt. I'm disgusted right now and I don't want to hear anybody complain the next time a defender talks about having to blow out a players knees anymore, because that's obviously what these football leagues want to exactly happen.

P.S.

The only people who deserve to be ejected is the official who made that call and the officials who upheld the ejection... and the drunk moron fan who threw his cup of beer at a freaking kid.

You know it's a crappy call when the damn announcers have to jump through hoops trying to justify it.

There was just a similar hit in the Texas/WVU game.. M. Davis was nailed along the sideline, but since he held onto the ball and got up, not even a flag thrown.

I hate losing, or as was said last week, moral victories. But after all is said and done with this tough two-game stretch I'm getting pretty psyched about Houston's future.

I'm a little worried about O'Korn at the moment, but I've been spoiled by Kolb and Keenum so right now it could be unfounded worry. A side effect from being a Houston sports fan in 2013 maybe. :D

Freshman or not O'Korn just pulled a major brain fart to end the game. Geezus.

I didn't get a lot of things I saw today from the Coogs. Both coaching and play calling, officiating...etc....etc. Even the field, although I still love to see a lot of dirt and mud and stuff during a game...lol.

Looked like a horse-collar to me or at least roughing the passer. I'm also not sure what O'Korn was thinking on that final drive but I really do like what I've seen out of him and Ward.

Yeah, I take into full account I might be thinking too harshly on O'Korn. He's a freshman and his numbers weren't that bad today. I don't know enough about Ward to have an opinion so I can't speak to that.

Any reason given as to why O'Korn was pulled today? I didn't see enough of the game to know why he was out (too much going on during the game unfortunately).

I agree this season was much better than expected, but to go to the next level we have to get more talent on the OLine. That was the biggest reason why we lost these 4 games.

It's been a long offseason....I mean wait to this game, but are you ready for some Cougars??????

My biggest concern, and we've seen it again this bowl season with other teams, is Houston defense losing whatever glue (if you will) they accumulated during the regular season. After such a long wait defenses always come into the game out of sync and as we know, Houston can't afford that.

On a side note. How 'bout the Cougars basketball team taking out UCONN the other night?? :gamer:

Can't wait for tomorrow. http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r65/ShowtimeN15580/Houston%20Cougars/houstoncougarsresized_zpsed0db772.jpg

I guess the good folks at ESPN had their equipment elsewhere and asked the people at Channel 13 - KTRK to do the honors today seeing how they aced the Texans preseason coverage and all.

They went to a commercial the split-second the audio gave and we missed two plays.
