Do you have enough ILBs now to cut him?

He's got 74 career tackles over three years, I think we'll be okay. Sharpton barely even sees the field.

Appreciate the back-up, but I honestly didn't have a point. I wanted to see what Rey thought about the situation.

If he said yes (which he did) I'd take that as he being so frustrated with Sharpton, he's willing to cut bait & move on with very little "proven" talent behind him.

If he said no, I'd take that to mean he sees something in Sharpton worth waiting for.

Personally I'd hate to see the shtstorm his uncle is going to bring down on Rick Smith if we cut him.

Rey's opinion aside, seems like time to cut bait to me. I like the guy and his playmaking ability, when he has it. IT'S just not too often.

He's GLASSMAN.

Not too much room for those cats in the NFL.

I think he has some talent, but you are right...I'm frustrated with him...

With mays dobbins and reed able to play inside plus an udfa or two, maybe a late vet pick up somewhere...

Roster spots are just too valuable.

Quality depth is too valuable. We have to keep them all to avoid another Barrutt Ruud situation. When you're playing for a ring you have to keep your experienced vets.

More clarification from Twitter on Sam Montgomery ankle report.

At camp, you don't get all the audio/transcripts because interviews being held all over the place all at the same time.

Sam told someone directly at SR610 that "...just got a mild high ankle sprain, not really that serious..."

So either 1. Yes, he has a high ankle sprain 2. He may be mistaken about it being a high ankle sprain. /Dr Sam.

It being a high ankle sprain would not be incompatible with Kubiak saying ankle sprain.

So, does Montgomery have a high ankle strain or not? Because if he does have a high ankle sprain it's a serious thing and he will probably miss the rest of the preseason at best. and the 1st month of the season at worst. If Montgomery has a high ankle sprain he's a candidate for the PUP at best.

And the IR at worst if he cant practice at all during the preseason. After all he would be a rookiewith no practice time. Do you think Wade would trust a rookie OLB like Montgomery during the middle of the regular season, when another rookie like Jefferson will have gotten all of the practice reps?

Once a player participates in so much as one training camp activity, they are no longer eligible to be placed on the preseason PUP list.

He is ineligible. To put it simply, anybody who hasn't already been put on the active PUP list - or anybody who has been put on it that comes off of it during preseason - isn't eligible for the reserve (out for the first 6 weeks of the season) PUP.

Both. Tweets are usually positive, everyone's excited early, fans don't want to read a bunch of awful reports ..... but someone's on the losing end of those positive plays.

Tale of the tape will be the preseason games. Lots of time between now and cut day for players/opinions/performance/injury to change.

I'll tell you a position that had me worried - but really no longer does.

Nose Tackle

I mean I was a bit worried about Mitchell, and it's early but by all accounts he is having a very good camp and has stepped it up.

Then we signed a guy recently that made me yawn at the time - Daniel Muir. All the sudden I'm hearing lots of praise about this guy, and he could be that large space eater many of us felt was lacking. Someone to stick in there on 3rd and 1 or whatever and just plug the middle.

I've also heard that Terrell McClain has has a good camp, and he has a chance to be a good backup and quality depth.

Lastly, the rookie Chris Jones. He's is probably 4th on this depth chart, but I've heard some positive feedback on his performance so far too. Most likely, this is a guy we stash for a year on the practice squad, but I think he could be a real player down the road.

I think we are a lot more set here than I anticipated, and this spot looks like a strong one to me rather than a weakness. Funny how a couple of off the radar signings and a young draft choice can really make a big difference.

Thanks for the reports. Sounds like Brandon Brooks is definitely a RG with his ability to plow the road, heh. Like what I hear about Earl Mitchell though honestly felt he would do well in any case. I was more concerned with the depth behind him so it's good to hear that the other NT's are showing up.

Braman had a rough one it sounds like. Don't want to imagine how it was for him and Dobbins to get pancaked by Brooks then laid upon by that big man. Ouch.

Texans coach says backup QB Case Keenum is having ‘a really good camp’ (http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2013/07/texans-coach-says-backup-qb-case-keenum-is-having-a-really-good-camp/)
Posted on July 30, 2013 at 11:58 am by John McClain

Texans coach Gary Kubiak says backup quarterback Case Keenum is going to play a lot in the preseason. (Brett Coomer/Chronicle)

After the Texans’ morning practice, coach Gary Kubiak was asked about backup quarterbacks T.J. Yates and Case Keenum.

“I think T.J. can throw the ball a little better than he’s throwing it,” Kubiak said. “His arm is a little tired right now. They’re all tired. He missed a few this morning, but he made some plays. He’s in a very competitive situation right now with Case, and that will work itself out throughout preseason. He’s (Yates) hard on himself. He’s always wanting to do better.

“He’s (Keenum) having a really good camp. He’s going to play a lot in the preseason. I’ve got to play him and T.J. a great deal. To make sure we’re doing the things Case does well, but he’s adapted and becoming a fine player. So it will be interesting to see how far he’s come.”

It's the [IMGwidthsize=600] code. He's resizing the pics so it doesn't throw off the display on a regular screen.

I guess tapatalk doesn't appreciate that code.

Kubiak on the condition of Brennan Williams:

(T) Brennan Williams is going to get an MRI. His knee swelled up on him a little bit again, so we’re taking a look at that. That’s where he’s at this afternoon. Other than that, we’ll find out where we’re at in the morning.”

(on how concerned he is about T Brennan Williams) “He’s taken a lot of steps forward. Hopefully, today’s not a step backwards. I don’t know. He did finish practice, just had some swelling. The way we work here, in the middle of the day, if we’ve got to send somebody over to get a look or something, they’re going to miss our afternoon stuff. Don’t read anything into it. Let’s see where we’re at in the morning.”

Kubiak on Keenum preparing to steal the show:

(on how QB Case Keenum is doing) “He’s doing real good. He’s making a big push. I think he’s made the other two (QB T.J. Yates and QB Stephen McGee) much better because of how far he’s come, but preseason will be huge for him. I will play him a great deal and it’ll be fun to see how far he’s come once the lights come on.”

(on the biggest difference in QB Case Keenum form when he first got here until today) “Confidence. Knowing what he’s doing. Now, he’s mastered another system and he wants to go compete. He does it every day. Does a hell of a job. Every day, Case makes four or five instinctive plays you can’t coach. He’s making a lot of progress.”

(on how far away QB Case Keenum is until the point where he can see he’s the backup quarterback) “Well, that’s what he’s trying to become. That’s his next step in this league. Now, I can tell you Case will tell you, ‘I want to be a starter. I want to start for a long time.’ The next step for him is to move up a notch and that’s what he’s competing with (QB) T.J. (Yates) to do right now. I don’t think we’re going to know until we go out there. What did he play in the preseason last year? Maybe 15 plays at the most. Well, he’s fixing to play a bunch. So we’ll find out exactly where he’s at, but, on the practice field, he sure looks good right now.”

Kubiak on Dennis Johnson:

(on what has impressed him about RB Dennis Johnson) “When you’re small like that and you’re hard to find back there, that’s one thing, but he’s an excellent runner. He’s got great quickness. He catches the ball well. The thing I’ve been impressed with probably more than anything is that he’ll step up and block a blitz. It’s hard to find guys who we say stay on the field for three downs and, if you’ll block the blitz and know what’s going on, you can become a three-down player. So that’s been encouraging.”

Dennis Johnson's reel from Arkansas vs Ole Miss 2012: Link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhHZ72gGyno)

Quick, good vision, great balance, great hands. Gets to second gear immediately, gets to the edge fast, finishes plays strong. He can make people miss, but seems to enjoy the contact.

The good thing about the video linked above is that it highlights his blocking. He's good at spotting the blitz, but can't physically buy much time for his QB. At 2:09, he gets about 17 yards on a draw play on 3rd and 10.

His runs in the 4th quarter was awesome and almost MJD-like. He shows a real willingness to chip and/or take on a guy one on one. Very impressive.

But he's just so damned short.

My thoughts on the above comments.

Reason why Kubiak is being asked about Dennis Johnson is that in camp in particular he has stood out. In yesterday's AM practice there was a play he did going into the endzone where he showed incredible power and balance and speed at the same time.

I'm not buying that TJ v. Case is a real thing. Kubiak is asked a lot about case and he wants to push TJ. Both TJ and Case had a meh preseason last year.

The good news is that both TJ and Case look better this season. All the QBs had a difficult day today and Kubiak wasn't pleased by that. JJ Watt was causing all sorts of mischief. Others too, but Watt was nuts.

The good thing about the video linked above is that it highlights his blocking. He's good at spotting the blitz, but can't physically buy much time for his QB. At 2:09, he gets about 17 yards on a draw play on 3rd and 10.

Thank you for your insight. As compared to McGee how does Case look?

If he can continue to learn as fast as he is now, the 6'5 shot blocking Watt will have a 6'6 twin tower in Willie coming thru the lane.

Very limited action on the defensive side of the ball, but he still wins matchup. He has & is still working to add more weight.

Watched him the rest of OTAs & continued to intrigue. Now in TC he's still making plays. It's crazy to see such a raw, former WR / TE w/ pop

First time I went to Texans' OTAs I asked myself who is this lanky 6'6 guy w/ heavy hands working the bag. Turned out to be Willie Jefferson

Mays said that in the time he's been around JJ he sees that same element in Watt. Says they both have talent, but work ethic sets apart

Mays smiled & said that they were special players. They both make your job easier. Working w/ Von you see he's the hardest worker...

Talked to Joe Mays for a minute today, asked him what it's like to go from playing w/ Von Miller to now JJ Watt?

If Roc starts to trust what he sees and knows, he will be a stud. He's always had the skill set, it's now on him to show the confidence.

Roc Carmichael is in a big camp for him. He may have the best feet, hips on the team. He can make plays, but not trusting his instincts.

I asked Chick Harris how does this team keep getting all this UDFA RB talent? Harris smirked & said hell of a scouting department & FO.

That doesn't mean Texans look to him over Tate this yr. Fear factor for Houston is another team steals him off PS. I have to think DJ is on.

I actually think that Wood will be a better every down back in Houston's ZBS than Tate. It's the reason Tate won't be back in 2014 IMO.

Wood isn't flashy, but neither was Foster. Wood is patient, understands the scheme, & sees the blueprint of the blocking.

Ray Graham & Cierre Wood look the same in practice as they did on last year's tape. Graham still not back to pre-injury form. Year away.

Regardless, that's what I like about Bouye's game. Crazy to think UCF had Bouye & Josh Robinson. Bouye's instant vert closes sideline down.

AJ Bouye is a tough one for me. On tape, in drills, he doesn't have great feet & struggles w/ transition. His vertical explosion is superb!

DeVier Posey said he has a goal of playing week 1. He looks hungry & the fact the team drafted a WR in the 1st has to drive him.

After AJ, Hopkins rookie, Posey & Martin yr 2, Jean & Maehl yr 3. Team may decide to keep a guy they've invested 3 yrs on in young group.

If Bonner isn't head & shoulders better than DJ on returns, may keep 3rd down back on returns & get Bonner on PS.

I've been high on Dennis Johnson for awhile now. Legitimate homerun threat & return man. DJ could factor into decision on WRs.

EZ Nwachukwu is old reliable. He doesn't have great speed or size etc. He could easily get lost in the shuffle, but he's consistent.

Andy Cruze catches your eye every now & then, but way too heavy footed. You can literally hear the thud on his breaks.

Bonner will be a watch & game action will be huge for him. Alec Lemon is making me look bad. Thought he had 0 shot. Catching everything now

Alan Bonner is the wildcard. He's already grown tremendously from OTAs to Training Camp. Great speed, most natural catcher on STs.

Will be a lot of variables in who / how many Texans keep at WR. Jean isn't showing great growth. Maehl routes are a + now, but inconsistent

I imagine Johnson, Hopkins, Posey, Martin are all on the roster. I'd expect them to have long ongoing conversations about whether to keep 5+

Texans' fans shouldn't expect it to be absolute. If Posey is performing, they'll work him in rotation. His versatility will be huge.

Speaking w/ Texans' WR coach, Larry Kirksey the other day, it was apparent that they want versatility. While AJ may be X, Hop - Z, Martin- Y

Like most young players that get hurt, Posey will come back w/ greater knowledge on routes. He's a key player that will be able to do X,Y,Z

Finally got a chance to speak w/ DeVier Posey today. I can't go into details on injured players, so I'll keep it basic....

Hopkins said that Schaub would stay out there and work with the WRs after practice. You can tell Schaub realizes how important chemistry is.

Hopkins said that the whole WR group has been more than helpful, but said that Schaub was actually taking a lot of time w/ them.

Saw DeVier Posey telling Hopkins something on his transition out of a cut, so I asked who's been helping him develop...

I told Hopkins that he reminded me of Hakeem Nicks & asked who he felt his game was closest to. Said no one, he just wants to be himself.

Hopkins asked for 1 last ball & still at high velocity caught it back handed w/ his right hand. He didn't have any touch the ground.

The rookie, Hopkins put on a show. DeAndre snagged 4 passes at high velocity off the jugs w/ his right hand & turned & did 4 w/ his left

Daily Foster, Reed, AJ, & Daniels practice on the jugs machine together. This was the 1st day that I saw Hopkins participate w/ them.

Hopkins said that it wasn't anything serious, came back out and finished the rest of the drills at full speed & didn't think more about it.

After Hopkins came back from getting his ankle wrapped, they made him test repeatedly. When asked if it was an issue. ....

There are just too many talented WRs on this Texans' roster. Alan Bonner will get the best look, but a lot tied into his ST play.

EZ took several reps with the 1s. He hasn't been flashy, but a consistent WR. Obviously a favorite (Aggies) of Kubiak's.

Hopkins had to come off the field for a second at practice. It appeared that he tweaked the ankle. While he was out EZ Nwachukwu subbed in

Hopkins said that he's still learning & made a mistake on the route. The same thing has happened a few times in camp. It's still early.

I gave Hopkins an out & asked if it was an option route & he just saw something different than Schaub. DeAndre owned up though.

Despite Hopkins' talent, even 1st round WRs have an adjustment period to the NFL game & it takes time to get on the same page w/ new QB.

I spoke with DeAndre Hopkins after practice about his chemistry with Schaub. Hopkins ran a deep post & Schaub threw the "go".

Some quick notes from the Texans' practice this morning:

When it was reported that the offense was running the Pistol, it was mentioned that it was to prepare the defense for facing the Pistol during the season. It was mentioned that it was logically Keenum that was running it. But now, I find out that SCHAUB was running it. Furthermore, the defensive players that were asked about what the idea was behind it, they supposedly became totally evasive. Keenum running the Pistol...........OK. The Pistol isn't a strictly QB run option formation.

I do understand that. The issue here is with the read-option offense, not the Pistol formation. That the read option works very well out of the Pistol or Shotgun doesn't make those particular formations, or any other formation it's run from, necessarily dangerous to the QB's health.......if your QB is built for hard hits even when standing still. I saw Big Ben running his offense from the Pistol. He wasn't a QB dual-threat at all. It was all about giving the QB the benefit of the shotgun to read and diagnose the defense while presenting the threat of a power running game to the defense. It would also change the offensive line play. With the RB positioned behind the "shotgun" QB, the ZBS timing would no doubt lose some of its effectiveness.

I was then told by a Texans employee that Gary Kubiak has already addressed the "Pistol" question and that he is simply using it to give his defenses a look at the formation since they will likely see it more often.

Honestly, I believe that to be the case. If Kubiak wanted to unveil a new formation during the season, he probably wouldn't show it at an open practice for the fans. I believe the Texans need to run some Pistol formation as I think it could help Schaub get into a rhythm with his quick passing game and the Texans can still run their stretch plays out of that formation as well.

If it is indeed mostly/only for the defense, the dangerous Pistol teams we will be facing are the ones that will have their QBs as high risk for tucking the ball and running..........you aren't going to mimicking that by using anyone but Keenum........certainly, not Schaub.

I asked a generalized read option question the other day re: SF & Seattle. The question isn't exactly the way I worded it, but it never is. This was the answer 7/29:

(on defending the read-option and playing more teams that employ that scheme this season) “We always do things or put things in that we may not necessarily do because we have to do it to prepare for other teams. It is something that we’re going to teach here in a couple of days as part of our progression, so that we can get our defense ready to do that. That doesn’t mean we’re going to be a read-option team. We’ve got to go with what we have strength-wise as a team, but you’re always teaching things. (Defensive Coordinator) Wade (Phillips) has to run some defensive schemes so that we can get ready offensively. We have to do the same thing as them offensively to get Wade and them ready. It’s all part of the grand scheme and obviously it’s a big part of football right now.”

They start off teaching the basics of the defense from scratch so that the rookies know it and then install more of it.

That's the biggest advantage of the ZBS and, to me, trumps the read-option. There's no need to be "flukey" and put your QB at risk. Maybe "read-option teams are trying to compensate for poor NFL OL play? I'm just typing and thinking out loud here. Regardless, I see the "read-option" going the way of the Dodo in the near future.

The Pistol isn't a strictly QB run option formation.

But they're saying it was to give our defense a look.... so they aren't caught unawares. If that was the case it would make sense for Case to be out there with the scout team.

With Schaub running it, we're wasting our time unless the offense plans on using it sometime during the season. Like the reverse, something we'll probably see twice this season.

This is the part we agree on. It was to give our defense a look -- not to get them ready to actually play against it. So there's no need to have a runner in at the QB position to simulate someone like a Russell Wilson or a Kaepernick.

So... since it was just for the look and for the alignment, having Schaub in there is fine.

But like LZ said, I wouldn't mind us using a few Pistol alignment plays just to give Schaub a little more set-up time. AND... I wouldn't mind taking Schaub off the field once or twice and putting Foster and Tate back there together and have one of them be the "QB". We won't do that but I wouldn't mind it.

It really doesn't make sense for our starters to be running plays out of the pistol formation unless we were thinking about adding it in.

For several reasons...We're in the heat of Training Camp...I can't see Kubiak taking time out from valuable practice time to have his starters running some stuff that has nothing to do with what we are going to do.

Just lining up in the pistol so the defense can get alignment stuff down can be done with dummies or back up defensive players.

Our first game is against the Chargers...Normally, you work on things to prepare for that first game, and when you play those teams with pistol formations you'll use the scout team to work on that stuff during the "week of"...

And if you really were trying to do something for the defense to give them a good look, why not use a QB that more closely resembles what those teams have?

I don't know if we'll see the pistol formation, but I think Kubiak is thinking about it. It is something that makes sense with this offense. Really it can make sense with any offense because it's just a formation, but with us wanting our plays to look the same and wanting to run multiple sets with various personnel, it can be used as something to keep the defense off guard. Pistol formation doesn't automatically = read option (I know that you didn't say that, I'm just making that statement).

Plus like you and LZ said, it would still allow for us to do our play actions, but it'd give the QB more time to get his head up down field because he wouldn't be coming from under center.

I hope we do see the pistol formation from these guys sometimes.

Just as Washington did, Texans can still run outside zone out of Pistol as well as boot-action passing attack. Win/win in my opinion.

Pistol formation allows Schaub to get set up quickly and better incorporate more 3 step passing attack into passing game.

More has come out from LZ today making it sound like the Texans are experimenting with the pistol formation for the offense (ie running it with Schaub and the 1's). I do know that Weeden and Landry both ran a TON of pistol formation at their respective NCAA schools and were fairly successful with it and neither of those guys are considered "running" or even "athletic" QB's, so I don't have much in the way of doubts with Schaub running it.

I think the problem is that Arian isn't currently practicing right now, so if we are planning on using it for offense, I cannot imagine them doing it very early in the season if Arian isn't used to working out of that particular formation.

note: I went on Tuesday and I didn't see many (or any if I can recall right) pistol formations, so I really can't comment on if it looks like something viable for the Texans offense.

August 1, 2013 at 11:46 am by Dale Robertson (http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2013/08/third-round-draft-picks-are-way-behind-so-far/)

The Texans’ two third-round draft choices have fallen “way behind” – coach Gary Kubiak’s words – because of early injuries and seem unlikely to contribute much this season, at least before the bye week.

Linebacker Sam Montgomery reported out of shape, then immediately suffered a sprained ankle. Offensive tackle Brennan Williams sprained his knee in the second rookie minicamp practice in May, which required arthroscopic surgery, and the same knee had to be drained because of swelling Wednesday.

“Don’t get me wrong; if you’re injured and you can’t go, you can’t go,” Kubiak said. “But it’s tough because we were counting on those guys to push players on our team and to be in a position to help us. It’s just not happening right now. Hopefully, we can get them going and hopefully we can get them out here as soon as possible.”

Keep in mind, OUR BYE WEEK IS WEEK 8.

As far as injuries suffered at camp on Thursday, the most severe was nose tackle Daniel Muir, who got his ankle stepped on. He needed to be helped off the field and was carted inside. ILB Cameron Collins has a hamstring injury and Earl Okine struggled with the heat. He looked dizzy during practice on the sideline.

Whitney Mercilus was still out of practice with a hammy injury. Reed, DeVier Posey and Arian Foster continued to work on the side.
They’re all on the PUP.

The Texans will have a walk-through on Thursday afternoon and just a morning practice on Friday. Kubiak said Friday’s practice will be the most difficult of camp so far because of the lack of bodies and the wear and tear. Saturday will be an off day.

“I think they’re working through that right now,” Kubiak said when asked about his players hitting a training camp wall.

Observations:

•UDFA Justin Tuggle got plenty of work with the first-team defense at outside linebacker on Thursday. They’ve used a few different guys there since Whitney Mercilus has been out with a hamstring injury.

•Willie Jefferson didn’t have a good day. He’s been turning plenty of heads but rookies have ups and downs. Thursday was a down day.

•Jared Crick continues to show improvement. He was excellent in pass rush drills and even better when they worked in 11-on-11s.

•Yeah, DeAndre Hopkins is impressing everyone, including Gary Kubiak. Hopkins made several big plays throughout practice and shined in the two-minute drill. He has shown the ability to go up and catch the ball vs. a defensive back.

“First off, I’m sitting here watching No. 10 today,” Kubiak said. “I like that. I know that. He’s making a lot of plays.”

•Garrett Graham looks healthy again. The tight end, who started camp on the Non-Football Illness list with a nasty virus, made a big catch today over Bryan Braman on the sideline.

•During 2-on-2 pass rushing drills, Chris Jones lined up on the outside, while Terrell McClain lined up at nose. The Texans have been making Jones learn all the positions but had worked him primarily at nose.

Me, too. Hope it's not bad. He was showing pretty good.

In better news...

The most welcome sights Thursday morning were seeing LB Brian Cushing making his debut in the seven-on-seven drills. In fact, he batted down the first pass thrown his way.

“It felt great,” Cushing said. “I’ve been telling guys, this is the right feeling. I’m playing football, making plays again. It was a long offseason, but I’ve got no worries now, no residual effects (from his anterior cruciate ligament repair). No pain. I can plant and cut. Everything feels normal again.”http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2013/08/cushing-participates-in-7-on-7-drills/

Me, too. Hope it's not bad. He was showing pretty good.

When a big player's foot is planted on the ground and immobilized by another player stepping on it, you worry about the weight of the big body simultaneously falling to the side (without the foot being able to come with it) and tearing not only the ligament(s), but also fracturing off attached bone. Hopefully, Muir's foot was released before he faltered. Being "helped" off the field and then carted off makes it more likely that he has suffered a significant ligament tear, plus or minus an accompany fracture. The Texans will know after an x-ray and MRI.

Thanks for the info., any details of the injury, severity? I liked Adams coming out of college and was glad when the Texans signed him as an UDFA. I had hopes for him with the Texans. IR might be a good place for him and maybe he can show what he's got next year in TC depending on the severity of the injury.

At Michigan, he played a good part of the last half of the season with a turf toe injury. On top of that, he entered the Combine with a hamstring strain........and still ran the 40 in 4.43.......with the strain being extended. From what I read somewhere on nfldraftscout.com, he suffered an unspecified knee injury which would probably require surgery and was therefore waived/injured, cleared waivers, then placed on IR. Would not be surprised if this were a compensatory injury related to his toe and/or hamstring conditions which were still giving him problems documented at least through his Pro Day. Hopefully he will be able to come back next year after a full year of surgery, rehab, and rest, as he was projected as a 2nd or 3rd rounder before his problems cropped up.

You have to worry about ANY groin problem. They usually begin as small adductor muscle tendon tears and have a strong propensity to be chronic season-long type of problems, ala JJo and Brooks Reed.

If you said he'd be traded, I might be willing to listen to you, but at this point we know little to nothing about the seriousness of the injury, and when healthy, Tate's better than anyone else they're going to be able to add to the roster, plus he's cheap this season at only $575,000.

Trades are a rare occurence in the NFL, so I'd guess that even that's unlikely, but there's no way he gets cut.

I too doubt he gets cut next year, but that's not the same as not getting real with a contract offer, so in effect it becomes a cut. They don't have to cut him. They will let him test the market, and if he gets much of an offer, I suspect they will let him walk. A trade for an injury prone backup RB? That's not happening.

GJ cont'd: dump the ball off to me, I'll catch it, and do it when I need to.

GJ: I wouldn't mind some flares. Right now I'm just concentrating on my role. Go in there & do the dirty work. When they dump the ball off..

JB: Does Greg Jones want to appear on the stat line & see some flares in this offense?

GJ: (While laughing) No question, man. That's why I'm here. If I didn't think so I wouldn't be here.

JB: We saw what Foster has done w/ a FB & Adrian Peterson special season behind a fullback, can you take Arian to the next level?

GJ cont'd: We've got to be on the same page. I've got to know what they're thinking about on certain running plays.

GJ: Of course, that's 1 of the keys. Like the O-line has to build chemistry. You've got to practice, you've got to take the reps.

JB: There's not much talk about the chemistry that a new FB needs to build with his HBs in a zone scheme. Is it important?

GJ cont': In Jacksonville we went downhill & here it's more zone concept. Arian is more of a slasher Maurice is a more downhill power runner

Greg Jones: Only difference is the scheme, here. You know it's a whole lot different scheme then what we had in Jacksonville.

Jayson: Biggest difference in blocking for MoJo & for Arian Foster?

Spoke with Greg Jones for a quick minute today. Here are just a few of his answers.

reads bottom-to-top
VJ cont': and you're by yourself off a lot, even in some zones & how he's played..I'll take him top 20, no doubt.

VJ: He's my guy, I'll take him there, I'll take him anywhere. For what we do, he's played very well, as much man as we play in this defense

JB: Where would you rank Kareem Jackson amongst the top CBs in the league? Top 20, now?

VJ cont': He (Posey) started for us in the playoffs. It helps both sides. When he gets Posey back it's going to be hard to beat that WR core

VJ cont'd: That's encouraging. It helps those guys get better. Last yr Posey going against J-Jo 1/2 the season, then going up to the varsity

VJ: All the time. You watch Hop go against J-Jo the 1st week & J-Jo is all over him & you watch Hop a day ago make some plays against J-Jo.

JB: Have you talked to (Larry) Kirksey (WR coach) about how much this secondary is helping this young receivers' group?

VJ cont'd: You can't do that. Also, his instincts help him make plays so it's a fine line between his instincts being helpful or harmful.

VJ: Your instincts say go here and your reads say you should be there. That's 1 thing he has to work on, his instincts overriding his reads.

VJ: I like him everywhere. His instincts is 1 thing that makes him a great player, but in the NFL that can also cost you to give up plays.

JB: Do you only like Swearinger in the box or are you comfortable with him out in centerfield?

VJ cont'd: he (DJ) studies, the rest is just gravy.

VJ cont'd: He's (DJ) playing 2 positions & he's made a total of 5 errors the whole camp. What's impressive is his football IQ & the way....

VJ: His football IQ. Everyone sees the bravado, the confidence, but I tell you what, the kid knows what he's doing.

JB: I've never seen a rookie carry himself like Swearinger. How has he impressed you so far?

VJ cont'd: that's going to help. Having those 2 players & those young guys covering tight ends better.

VJ cont'd: I mean really have those 2 guys back in dime is really going to be a tweak. Having DJ Swearinger & Keo, who can really cover TEs.

VJ: The tweak could be having Ed as our middle safety, that's a tweak and Cushing as our cover backer, that's going to be a tweak.

JB: I've talked a lot about the Dime coverage from the Patriots games. Are you looking to tweak something or has that already happened?

VJ cont'd: He came in about 203, 204. That 13 pounds has made him a lot faster down the field.

VJ cont'd: Which is important in this league if you're going to play a long time. He's dropped his weight to 190. Which has helped him.

VJ: Now we are. He was obviously a great nickel in college & that's where we saw him playing early, but now he's becoming an outside corner.

JB: Seemed to me that he had the ability to play inside & outside coming out of the U. Are you seeing that from him?

VJ cont'd: He had some games in the slot where he was very, very impressive, Tennessee, both Indy games.

VJ: His first game he handled very well. The playoff game is where he kind of struggled against Wes. He's a tough cover, along w/ Tom.

JB: How did he handle that first start vs Wes Welker?

VJ: He's (Harris) had the best camp so far out of all DBs, in my opinion as far as consistency & making the most plays. He can read routes.

Jayson: Brandon Harris seems to be playing with a lot more confidence.

VJ cont'd... (Roc) He's tough, he's smart. He's had a really good camp this last week.

VJ cont'd... He (Roc) always plays better later. He's a good little player. Really in his 2nd yr cause he missed his whole 1st year.

Vance Joseph: The last 3 days he's really played well. Roc's the kind of player, he needs the time to get his footwork & tech early in camp

Q: Seems as if the light went on for Roc (Carmichael) today, did you notice a difference?

Quick notes from today's talk with Texans' DB coach, Vance Joseph. This guy will be a DC soon. Check him out on the postgame show this year

Certainly heat could be ONE factor. However..............the truth is that heat cramps have previously been known as miners cramps and fireman's cramps, and they have historically been thought to be a result of dehydration and losses in sodium through sweating.

Cramps are strong involuntary muscular contractions which are usually short-lived and release on their own. They can be quite painful and occur most frequently in the Gastrocnemius (calf) and hamstrings. Actually heat and gently stretching the muscle can help to relax a cramp.

Cramps can occur at rest or during activity in any environment. Therefore the old hypothesis that cramps are due to dehydration and a lack of sodium and other electrolytes lacks scientific back-up. Current research has shown no link between high temperature and the development of cramps. The current thought on the cause of cramps is alterations in spinal neural reflex activity which is caused by FATIQUE and is more common and more intense in some than others.

The term heat cramps is rapidly falling out of favor due to the lack of scientific evidence to support it. Conditioning deficiencies as a cause has essentially taken its place.

From another thread where Lucky brought up the subject of so many players going down so early.:

Koppen got the job in 2012 when JD Walton went down for the year with a broken ankle. Walton had surgery on the ankle again in June, so the Broncos are razor thin at center.

It's spooky seeing this many season ending injuries in the first few days of camp.

With first contact practices being ~7-8 months following their last for most players, makes me believe that players may be taking their conditioning for their more pussified non-contact mini-camps and OTAs less seriously .....and may be held by coaches and trainers to lesser standards to come down to the lower requirements than necessary for the old full-padded contact off season activities.

I guess. But I don't remember seeing so many training camp injuries back in the 70's & 80's, before the mini camp/OTA era. I think it's just as possible that these guys are over trained in the gym, with the joints just not being able to handle the forces created by the extra mass they are carrying. And they are getting bigger every year.

This is just another reason to get used to a more resistant target contact training. I had the opportunity to take care and befriend a number of Houston Oilers. I remember them talking about the fact that they HAD to stay in shape year around just to stay up with TC. They knew what to expect. TCs in those days were described as the worst weeks of their lives...........sometimes ALL day and there were NO DAYS OFF. Keep in mind that there were essentially no climate controlled fields except the Astrodome. (The Oilers had the Astrodome, but they were never allowed to practice in them for TC.) Specifically many teams were made to practice in the mid day sun/heat.......no shade allowed. Outdoor practices were never called off for rain or snow. And what they emphasized was that there were no multi-million dollar guaranteed contracts. If you weren't prepared for TC............you didn't have a job!.........and that included ALL of what would today be considered the "prima donna" vets.

Originally on 7/29 Kubiak said that they were going to run some read-option as a look but is not their strength. Pistol not mentioned.

Then a couple days later, they ran some pistol. Nobody asked him about it after the practice. Somebody told LZ Kubiak had already said pistol just a look.

But because I knew coach wasn't asked specifically about pistol, I asked him about it the next day, and he said it was something they were looking at.

Thanks for the update, Steph.

With the Pistol, I would still have concern over the ZBS timing of the Oline, in that on a running play, the RB is so far back, having to make it so far to the LOS........especially if in a delay, the OL would have to afford Schaub extra time of protection as well.

Yeah, the jury may technically be still out but the evidence, to date, is looking toward a "bust" verdict. And maybe "bust" isn't exactly the right term because the dude has flashed skills.

But if he can't stay on the field 'cause he's always "in the tub"....

Most knee injuries will cause a limp for at least a week.....a strained/torn ligament, a meniscus, an ACL........the physician's exam will give a good idea as to which it may be. However, an MRI is the definitive word as to the extent of injury. We should know what 'minor" injury is being dealt with later today or by the end of tomorrow, whenever the MRI is perfomed and the results are released.

He can't even bend down to take a knee. Any news on what happened? I'm at the camp.

Was he able to get up off the ground when it happened or was he helped in getting up (not talking about walking off the field).

One of the most minor potential injuries you might see some acute limp with need for ice pack is a simple soft tissue knee bruise caused by direct trauma to the front of the knee.......hopefully, of course, not a more serious deep patella (knee cap) bone bruise (MRI diagnosed), where the player can try to play through but may have significant impact on performance during the longer healing period. Some semblance of rest would still be in order for even the former injury, especially since this is not a real game.

Very likely, Foster's back compensatory injury.

I take it that Watt's elbow is the same elbow.......hope he has decided to keep wearing his brace....possibly throughout the rest of his career (mentioned that last year).......with the type of injury he originally incurred, re-injury is notoriously common.

Sam Montgomery dressed and working out. But doesn't have shoulder pads on. Won't go full but good sign.

Interesting note. JJ Watt is wearing his elbow brace for the first time offseason. Looked to have tweaked his elbow Thursday.

Andre Johnson with a huge leaping grab over the middle.

Brooks Reed was down getting looked at by trainers. They were looking at his knee. He has walked off the practice field .

Watt leaves team drills to work on third field with injuries players. Don't look to into it though.

Biggest note is that Darryl Sharpton is a full go today.

Cushing out on the field today. Looks like he still trying to get the feel for it.

Hopkins one again showing his ball skills. Deep ball from Schaub goes up and gets it over Kareem

Braman having a tough time once again in the run game.

Terrell McClain and Darryl Sharpton playing the run tough. Sharpton playing like a mad man today.

Derek Newton moving Braman to the sideline. Newton giving him the business.

Brice McCain with great coverage to get over the top of Martin. Intercepts the pass from Yates.

Antonio Smith would have had the sack on that play on Schaub.

Graham with a great diving catch from Schaub. Good coverage from Cushing better places ball.

Martin with a great catch against Keo. Tight ropes the sideline and gets upfield in a hurry.

Garrett Graham once again a hands catch on a high pass

Tim Jamison getting back into pass rushing shape. Great swim move to get to the QB

Hopkins is having a great day. He is catching everything and JJo/Kareem have been all over him.

Keo great blitz would have been a sack on Schaub.

Lemon with an outstanding catch but out of bounds. Bouye with the coverage to ride him out of bounds.

@DZangaro

Arian Foster still isn't back at practice. He's still working on the side

Team portion starts off with a leaping catch from Andre Johnson

Dennis Johnson is getting a ton of meaningful reps with Foster and Tate out.

Yeah...I want to tone down my excitement for Hopkins. Through the entire draft process I wanted him to be a Texan but anytime we draft a player in the 1st round it's never the player I want. (I wanted Kyle Wilson over Kareem and it looks like I was wrong)

I cannot wait to see him on the field because by what i've read, everything we hear is LEGIT. He's going out and owning our 1st team CB's. They blanket him and he's still making the catch. I can't wait till Friday.

Spoke with Antonio Smith, Reggie Herring, Sam Montgomery, Danieal Manning, and Case Keenum today. Some quick notes. Audio on SportsTalk 790

Antonio on Swearinger: "He's not going to be a stealth ninja. Everything about him is all up in your face."

Danieal Manning on Swearinger: "His leadership ability, play making ability is tremendous." Vets talking about Swearinger's leadership.

Montgomery on Injury: I speculate I'll be back in a week, week & a half." Sounds like we'll get a good chance to see him in the 4th preseason game if he has no setbacks..

Sam Montgomery on preparing while injured: "I'm out here everyday w/ my notebook, pen & paper & I just come in being a student of the game."

Sam cont'd: "Really learning concepts & details & stunts." "Getting the play call from coach, getting the signals from Wade."

Montgomery on learning the playbook: "I keep running it thru my head & doing mental rep, mental rep, mental rep."

Sam on 34 OLB run D & pass rush: "The easiest thing coming to me now is the run, cause it's just an aggressive get off."

Sam Montgomery cont'd: "Pass rush is something I've got to work on a little bit. Getting thru that stiff arm."

Reggie Herring on Willie Jefferson: "He has natural instincts in pass rush skills."

Herring on Jefferson: "He's athletic, long. He actually fits the prototype for an outside backer to us."

RH on Willie: "He's very raw right now, undeveloped, but he's shown enough natural instinctive pass rush skills that he gets your attention"

Herring on Willie: "If he does play for us his length will help out on the edge. Yes, his hands up length would be a factor."

Herring on rookie OLBers: "The rookies for the most part have been inconsistent."

Herring on Willie's run D: "He lacks play strength, he's got to use his leverage & length w/ his arms to get off blocks."

Herring on Joe Mays switch from 43 to 34: "That's what Joe's trying to do right now. He's learning the language & the system."

RH on Mays: "He knows how to play the game, he's fast twitch, instinctive LBer." "He aren't to have it (scheme switch) down by the 1st game"

"Finally"? That's kinda harsh, isn't it?

He was a rookie last year, coming off of injury. He played in the rotation and he did... OK. Nothing great but that wasn't unexpected. He should be better this year and hopefully, MUCH better.

Uh, yeah. He was injured as a senior in college.

He was healthy last year and active for 15 out of 16 games. He's not "finally" not injured. His lack of production last year wasn't because he was injured, it was because he was a rookie playing behind JJ Watt, Antonio Smith, and Tim Jamison.

Has anyone seen Schaub doing agility drills?

I'm sure he does the standard footwork drills with all the rest of the qb's.

I seriously doubt Schaub is out there doing the latter or stepping through tires/ropes. There's better things he can do with his time.

But I could be wrong. Maybe he is doing those drills with the rb's or wr's for some reason.

He's clumsy as heck.

Normally I wouldn't want to see a QB doing such drills, but that's Schaub's biggest weakness, imo. Hell, I'd love to hear he joined a dodge ball league in the offseason.

Last year, JJ sustained a complete dislocation, where all the elbow ligaments are disrupted. This is a very serious injury, leaving almost all players with combinations of limited range-of-motion, stiffness, pain and loss of strength and/or minor instability (from permanently stretched ligaments). As I posted when it happened, this injury is very prone to re-dislocation......even when considered "fully healed." I emphasized that re-dislocation a second time proves instability and no longer allows for consideration for conservative rehab as was done for the first.......it leads to the need for SURGICAL repair, which is a 6-12 month recovery........and that's why I strongly suggested last year in order to minimized the latter scenario, he would be smart to wear that splint for the remainder of his career.

Before the "soreness" was revealed:

J.J. Watt says injured elbow never fully healed last season (http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2013/04/j-j-watt-was-playing-injured-last-season/)

Posted on April 3, 2013 at 8:27 pm by John Brannen

Texans defensive end J.J. Watt is looking forward to what he hopes is an injury-free season of harassing opposing quarterbacks. (Karen Warren/Houston Chronicle)

Eighty-one total tackles, 20.5 sacks and 16 batted passes earned Texans defensive end J.J. Watt the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award.

According to Watt, he wasn’t playing at full capacity.

During the first week of practices in August, Watt dislocated his left elbow. He missed the majority of the preseason and wore a noticeable black arm brace during all 18 Texans’ games.

“In the beginning, it definitely affected me,” Watt said in an interview with SportsRadio 610. “All the ligaments in there were torn, they were all gone, so they had to have time to recover and regroup. So obviously, I wasn’t at full strength. The brace helped a lot, but it was more of a mental thing, getting over the thought process of knowing that it was injured and making sure that I could still have confidence in it. As the season went on, I got more and more confidence in it and obviously, it didn’t hinder me too much; I had some success out there. But (I’m) looking forward to a 100 percent full healthy season.”

Playoffs and anyone else posting camp updates and tweets - mucho gracias my fellow Texans fans. I've been soaking these in every day. I know it's only one or two person's opinions, but it's all we have to go on if we can't make practice.

Interesting that Chris Jones is playing some DE. I wonder if it's just to see if he can do it (IE the more positions one knows the greater the chance of making it) or if this is an actual position switch from NT to end. Jones seems like a NT to me based on everything I have read and the little game action I've seen of him.

I'm starting to really love the talent and depth at both WR and secondary - and both have been notorious trouble spots in the past. Guys on both sides of the ball making plays, lots of competition etc. Steel hardens steel - both sides getting better. The same can be said of the trenches. Love it.

Ed Reed interview with Deion Sanders on NFL Network was great.

Ed(hip) told Sanders today that he's 75-80 percent and he wouldn't play if today was the season opener. If the Super Bowl was today, "I'd play."

Note: It was Reed who asked Deion to speak to the DBs today.

"Work on your craft, you're an artist. Get better at your craft." Reed to Texans DBs.

On of the first things he did -- Ed bought Andre a bicycle to keep him in shape, "This is his team. I want him to be the MVP of this league. I want him to win that Super Bowl."

Every Texans DB will have Deion's phone number, to call and ask questions any time. Pretty frickin' cool.

During #Texans special teams practice Randy Bullock's kickoffs have gone out of end zone or a yard or so from out.

It's good news to hear about Bullock if it was indeed him. I suspected that during his year off, he'd improve his leg strength/technique. Hopefully the time off and spare training time did him some good.

Re: shapiro in that picture above, I think he has a decent shot to stick around at least on the practice squad if he can kick well. Being able to punt and kick field goals is kind of valuable.

Favorite play of the day was away from the ball. Swearinger undercuts TE in dime zone cov, QB quickly goes to next read. Great tech / angle

For the most part, Schaub's fade has come on quick w Hopkins. Saw the lack of experience w/ it with Lemon. Kareem was handsy, but short PBU

I've talked a lot over the years about how Schaub doesn't throw the EZ fade. Obviously making a conscious effort this year w/ Hop in town.

Kareem Jackson had tight coverage on AJ on EZ out & got the PBU on would be TD in redzone drills.

Talked to Jefferson about his surprising discipline on the backside & how that combined w/ rare athleticism could factor in vs zone read tms

W. Jefferson may be getting undersold when he's mentioned as "extremely raw" More than a pass rusher in his future. Tons of TFLs on backside

J-Jo all over Hopkins, arms literally came under Hopkins arms from behind, Hopkins with the same solid hand catches that he had at college.

Trevardo played with a solid base vs Quessenberry on the edge when setting vs run.

Roc continues to impress. He made his living as a boundary CB at Va Tech, & this experience & his physical play showed in the RZ today.

Jeff Maehl ran a beautiful EZ post corner route on Elbert Mack this morning. Hard fake / bite & Maehl open w/ ease.

Willie Jefferson has been impressing w/ pass rush skills, but the added weight & reps are starting to pay off in other areas.

Brandon Harris came out w a sore groin & had the ice bag wrapped early on. Later in practice ice was off, but didn't participate in drills.

Smith didn't want to discuss the knee after practice & Kubiak said he just found out about it. Afternoon session should bring more detail.

During morning practices, Ben Jones filled in nicely for Wade Smith in redzone 11 on 11s at LG. Wade was looking at left knee w/ trainers.

Wade Smith has a bone bruise and is out a couple few days

This is what I was concerned about with Brooks direct knee impact injury. A patella (knee cap) bone bruise can becoming a nagging injury leaving the player unable to participate due to lack of range of motion and often very intense pain. Furthermore, it is not unusual to be associated with damage to the adjacent bursae, fat, patellar ligament or the posterior cartilage surface of the patella. An accompanying small chip fracture or stress fracture of the patella is also not uncommon. Especially, even if a tiny stress fracture is present, if not addressed with an 8-10 week healing rehab period, there is long term concern that another blow to the knee could break the knee cap in two because of the quadriceps muscle pulling from above while the patella tendon pulling from below during flexion of the knee. This would require major surgery with at least a 3-4 month period prior to returning to play.

http://members.upnaway.com/~poliowa/anatomy%20of%20knee.GIF

An MRI will have been already performed to diagnose the bone bruise. The Texans would know at this point if and how much collateral damage may exist. Patella bone bruises alone are bad enough in that depending on how severe, it could take months (up to a year in some cases) to completely heal, barring further trauma to the area. Rest and rehab of several weeks would not be out of order for even a modest bone bruise. However, as it stands now, if that is the case, I would guess that the Texans would push Wade to the limits of his pain threshold in order to get him back on the field as soon as possible. In doing so, it would not be surprising to see a significant performance drop off and/or setback.

In that the reports only say bone bruise of the "knee," this could also apply to bone bruise to the lower femur bone or upper tibia bone which are considered part of the knee. When bone bruises occur in load-bearing bones such as the tibia and femur, avoidance of weight-bearing for significant periods (depending on severity of the bruise) is extremely important to reduce the extension of the damage and significant prolongation of recovery.

Both Crick & Mitchell looked like Antonio Smith in 2009 & 2010. Close, but never finishing. They'd get pressure, & they'd get the QB off the spot, but never closed the deal.

That's still good football, don't get me wrong. I'm agreeing with you more or less in that I think they are both good interior pass rushers. They just need to take that step Antonio did in 2011.
