View Full Version : Tim Tebow signs with the Patriots

Per Ed Werder

Tim Tebow will sign with the New England Patriots and will report to minicamp on Tuesday.

Bill Belichick denied a report last week claiming that he hated Tebow as a player.

Josh McDaniels, offensive coordinator of the Patriots, was head coach of the Denver Broncos when Tebow was a first round pick.

Tebow was released by the New York Jets in April.

This does not surprise me at all. Belichick likes high motor guys.

They could do some crazy plays with Tebow behind Brady. His arm is good enough to have to keep it in mind, but dude is also mobile. If Tebow is willing to be a football player, doing whatever the team needs him to do to win games, I think he can find a home with the Patriots.

I wish them enough good luck to make it to the AFC Championship game so they can lose to the Texans.

Tim Tebow should start over Tom Brady-Skip Bayless

Hopefully Belichick will use him to torture the Jets twice a year (ala Danny Woodhead at first), and he won't do anything against us when we play. Beyond that, I don't really care one way or the other.

They sure do like big body TEs in Boston. Maybe they can make him into a poor man's Aaron Hernandez.

The funny thing is that Brady is actually at the age where a team should be looking to groom his replacement.

New England is also a QB friendly system. Not saying Tebow is the next Brady but playing a little better than he did his last year in Denver + that system he can be very successful.

Also, getting a second shot with McDaniels if he don't make it as a QB that's it.

Rey

Good system for him...but not as a qb. Of he's willing to play an h back type role and be a back up qb I think he'll thrive there.

This could be the perfect fit for him, and yes as a QB.

If Tebow truly still wants to play meaningful minutes in the NFL, I expect him to be groomed into Gronk's replacement. I'm a bit certain that Bill prefers tebowing over fist pumps.

Not wishing it upon him, but if Tom Brady takes a linebacker shot to the sternum in Week Two and loses his job to Tebow, I'm going to redouble my prayers.

This is why the Patriots are the Patriots. They'll seemingly give anyone a look and if they think he can help them win football games, then they'll bring him in full-time. It's why they gave a shot to a highly troubled guys like Moss and Ocho, or to monumental big money busts like Haynesworth. Now, they're giving a chance to Tim Tebow, a guy who plays a position that is the least of importance for the Patriots going into this season.

The guy might not even crack the 53 man roster, so it's much too soon to even consider what they're going to do with him. The point remains though that the Patriots want to see what they can do with him. You're given more roster spots during this time of the year for the very purpose. Many of the bad teams waste these on "camp bodies." Not the Patriots.

The other 31 teams realize Tebow is not worth the distraction. This is Belichick doing a favor to his OC and a coaching buddy.

I heard Belichick's press conference about an hour ago.

Classic Bill,

(on if Ryan Mallet is entrenched as the back up QB) "We're just learning our positions now, competition will take place in camp, just like it always has."

(on if he'll allow Tebow to Tebow after a good play), "I think I've talked enough about that player already."

(on if Vinny Testeverdes opinion weighed in on their decision), "I haven't spoke to Vinny in years."

(on the reasoning to sign Tebow), "He's a smart, talented, works hard."

I'm paraphrasing. There was a lot more, but that's about all I can remember.

Who else does this interview sound like??

From Patriots.com:

Q: Obviously OTAs are voluntary, but what is your reaction when a player chooses to work out on his own away from the team?

BB: It is what it is. We all know what the rules and the guidelines are and that’s what they are.

Q: Can it affect a player’s position on the team if he chooses not to be here?

BB: It is what it is. We don’t make the rules.

Q: When you have rookies that are unable to participate in this part of the offseason, how difficult does it make the start of training camp for them? Are they behind?

BB: Definitely behind. Any player that’s not out there is behind. The fact that they’re not out there is the best thing for them because they need to get physically healthy and rehab whatever condition they have so that’s more important than being out there. But if they were healthy and they could be out there, they would gain more from being out there than not being out there. We do the best we can with each individual player and do what’s best for him. Guys that are out there are out there. The guys that can’t be out there are working hard and hopefully they’ll be out there as soon as they can. We have guys in different stages of that process. When they’re ready, they’re ready and when they’re not then they’re working to get ready.

I'm sure that Tebow doesn't believe in abortion. That didn't stop him from performing one last night.:spy:

Tim Tebow’s numbers say it all: 1-for-7, -1 yards, 1 INT, 0.0 rating
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 17, 2013, 6:56 AM EDT

Sometimes the box score really does tell the story.

So we’ll just start by telling you what Patriots quarterback Tim Tebow’s stat line was in Friday night’s preseason game: 1 completion in 7 attempts, for -1 yards, with 0 touchdowns, 1 interception and a 0.0 passer rating.

Yes, that was negative yardage. The only pass he completed was a short toss to rookie receiver Josh Boyce, who was tackled a yard behind the line of scrimmage. Tebow’s interception was an absolutely horrible play on which he took a shotgun snap, ran a couple of steps toward the line of scrimmage, and then fired the ball way over the head of intended receiver Kenbrell Thompkins, and right into the hands of Tampa Bay cornerback Mason Robinson. He threw a couple other passes into coverage that easily could have been intercepted.

Folks, an NFL quarterback is simply not supposed to look like this.

Still, Tebow was upbeat and optimistic after the game, saying that he believes he is getting better as a quarterback and getting a better feel for the Patriots’ offense.

“I feel like I’m improving every day and you know, growing and learning, and learning the offense. That’s what it’s about – every day trying to get a little better,” Tebow said.

Unfortunately, Tebow doesn’t need to just get “a little better.” He needs to get a lot better. And he’s running out of time to do so. If Tebow doesn’t look a lot better in the last two preseason games, it’s tough to see him making the Patriots’ 53-man roster.

Timmy, it would be good for you to develop just a tiny bit of insight while you're at it:tiphat:.

I like Tebow, but that was the worse passing performance I think I've ever seen. Another 2 of those incompletions probably should have been INTs. It was terrible. Passes were late and not even close to the receiver. If that was any other QB he probably would've been cut today.

I still say build a top defense and you can win with Tebow.

Regardless of the dog & pony show, I truly enjoyed watching those ridiculous comebacks he had with the Broncos. That was good, different football.

Exactly. Build a top defense and there are still layers of not very good QB's you can sift through and take your pick of before you get to Tebow's level of bad. Some folks just can't resist a feel-good story.

I ask this with no agenda, simply wondering if anyone knows the answer. Can Tim Tebow catch, block, or tackle? We know he can carry the ball like a RB but can he do as a RB?

The reason I ask is that there's no reason in the world that his time in the NFL should be at an end if he can do any of these things. It's just time for him to face his limitations and accept the reality that he has not been blessed with NFL-level QB ability. If he still wishes to play football it's time to start looking at a position change.

Does anyone know what he could do other than be a bad NFL QB?

I don't think anyone can tell you if he can catch or not, unless they were at a practice where he attempted to play TE or something. I tend to agree with you, but it remains to be seen.

he tried a route or two with the jets and i'm comfortable saying no, he cant catch. one play really comes to mind - a simple flare where he looked lost and completely freaked when the ball came his way.

Tebow's big but he's not very fast and isn't really elusive or able to juke guys as a runner. He made most of his bones by getting the surprise with rushing the ball with the occasional laugher huge passing play. As a blocker, my guess is he's not anything special but we've never seen it on game film so who the hell really knows.

Grams

He just needs to play when there is 2 min left in the game and behind by a score or two.

He has the "it" factor, the drive, the personality, but just does not have the ability - till the last 2 min. Then the other team's defense seems to have a spell put on them and they forget how to play.

I don't see anything about his catching ability (good or bad) here. What I see is the the DB or LB had an easy time getting to the ball and blocking it, meaning he either hasn't gotten his route down worth a darn (more likely) or the QB didn't lead him worth a crap.

It's just one play, but, just sayin...

Which means he would have had to catch it behind the direction he was facing. Probably still his own fault for running a crappy route though.

I'm not saying that was a perfect pass, but if the ball hits you in the head, as a receiver, you probably should have at least gotten your hands on it.

Either way, that's the only evidence of Tebow's receiving abilities I've seen, so that's why I posted it.
