Listening to mark vandemeer on the radio...some notes:

-Keemun looks to have taken a huge jump. Shows great command and looks abundantly more comfortable and ready than last year. He really made a note of how well Keemun looked.

-Hopkins stands out as an obviously better player than everyone on the field. The way he runs routed, catches the ball and competes are at a different level than everyone else.

-Klein looks good. Coaches are pleased that he mentally retained information during ore practice meetings and applied it on the field.

-looks to be incredibly competitive with Undrafted free agents

Don't mind if I jump in..

Some insight from some tweeters that are there..

Kubiak: Thinks a great opportunity for one of the UDFA RBs to make team /number of guys looked like real deal guys at practice

Kubiak: After morn practice. RBs at rookie camp should be excited. "We have two on our team. There's an opportunity"

Texans rookie minicamp flash? Hopkins' catches. /bunch of media saying all in unison "Did you see that?"

One Hopkins catch looked like sure interception downfield on misthrown ball. Surprised he grabbed it. Also got one-hand catch behind him.

DeAndre Hopkins is a special player. Understands how to play the position. #Texans

Hopkins showed his hands off the entire day. Made a one handed catch that left me speechless bc it happen so fast.

#texans LB Sam Montgomery told me he tweaked his back during drills. Kubiak says he may sit out the afternoon session, Sam says he won't LOL

All rookie draft picks were accounted for during mini camp.

D.J. Swearinger is a leader. Already directing traffic and is well put together player.

Alan Bonner is bigger in person than what I realized. He looks like he can play either inside or outside.

Brennan Williams is an athletic big right tackle who can move. He is one to watch.

Brennan Williams and David Quesseberry are the first guys you want off the charter bus.

Kubiak very impressed with DeAndre Hopkins. Also singled out Bonner. Said they know what they want to do w/ball before catching it. #Texans

Trevardo Williams showed why he is a edge rusher, can lean and get low. Has good closing speed.

Hopkins had some very impressive catches. A nice one handed catch early in the session. Stared down Swearinger after one. CALM DOWN , GUYS! IT'S JUST PRACTICE! :D

Talked to Swearinger after practice and he said he was born to lead and looks forward to that role in Houston.

Swearinger and Hopkins both laughed after practice about this little rivalry they've got going.

Will add more but I think i'll space it out a little better :D

Tweeters are Patrick Starr, Stephanie Stradley, Marc Vandemeer, and Tania Ganguli.

Brennan Williams I can't say enough of. I know it's the first day, in shorts and shirts, but he has something about him. Very athletic.

If some of the returning players aren't motivated and ready to compete this offseason I'll be extremely disappointed. Martin, Jean, Pleasant, and Braman need to prove that they're capable of getting the job done. A lot of these rookies we've drafted or brought in have an edgy personallity. The vets need to match that intensity. Is it August yet?

AngryNateFTW
05-10-2013, 12:50 PM
For sure. I expect Braman to have all the intensity in the world but the others, I agree.

Former #NotreDame Punter Ben Turk, nephew of former #Texans punter Matt Turk, was in camp this am as well.

Just 30-1/4 (1/4 longer than Austin).

We'll see. Coming from Kubiak this sounds more like, "Why do y'all keep asking me about my QBs? I don't really want to answer, but since I have to say something, let me throw out some meaningless yap. I drafted a WR in the 1st round & 6th round this year, a third & a fourth last year..... no one asks me about replacing Andre. I pick up an undrafted guy on a "tryout" basis & all of a sudden I'm overhauling my QB corps......... sheesh."

But it's hard to tell with Kubiak & that's the way he wants it.

Day 2 Mini-Camp vvvv

Swearinger and Hopkins stood out once again. Swearinger had a pick 6 and Hopkins showed off his hands.

Talked to Trevardo Williams after practice said the speed of the game and learning on the run have been the biggest difference.

Williams said he has to get used to the weather down here in Texas. Said this isn't Conneticut anymore.

rookie minicamp OH: Just wait until you see the body transformation of G Brandon Brooks.

Collin Klein is hot and cold as a quarterback. Makes some great throws on the run with accuracy then has trouble in the pocket.

Talked to Alan Bonner after practice. Felt he has to learn to how to be a professional. Called it nothing but football out there.

Had a chance to talk to Justin Tuggle. Says he feels at home here (played at Blinn) and is comfortable w/ the SOLb position.

Montgomery had his back tighten up again. Worked though it majority of the first practice.

Uh-Oh, could be re-occurring theme here..

Tight end Ryan Griffin looked good catching the football. Big target and understands soft spots in coverage.

Can't report what was said during practice, but it's fun watching @Nukdabomb and @JungleBoi_Swagg go at it. Hope they don't change.

Love this healthy competition.

Alan Bonner says that having #texans coach Gary Kubiak already in his corner only makes him work harder.

video

The Texans launched their three-day rookie camp Friday and from an early look here is what jumps out after the first two workouts from Day 1.

DeAndre Hopkins is as good as advertised. He caught everything that was anywhere near him and a few that weren't. He showed he has great hands and can also go deep. He's competitive and thinks anytime the ball is in the air it's his. Hopkins final catch of day one was most likely his best. A one-handed grab with a defender draped all over him up against the sideline. Hopkins came down with the catch and both feet looked to be in bounds.

“He did really good," Gary Kubiak said. "As a matter of fact, his last play he made a hell of a catch. He’s doing fine."

Hopkins left the evening session early after tightening up with cramps in his lower leg.

"It’s just that adrenaline and the newness of coming out here and flying around gets some guys pretty tired pretty quick," Kubiak added. "I think they’ll be fine tomorrow.”

D.J. Swearinger is ready to play in the NFL today. He's confident, poised, comfortable anywhere on the field and has a great football I.Q. Swearinger was directing other players where to be in formations and above all was the exciting showman he was the last four years at South Carolina. After breaking up a pass during a routine drill, Swearinger threw his arms repeatedly back and forth across the front of his body as to signal incomplete as he danced back to the sideline. He was everywhere the ball was.

Alan Bonner is put together. Bonner is listed at 5-10, 193 pounds. He looked bigger than that and stronger. he had a strong first day and already being a favorite of Gary Kubiak won't hurt him either.

"Obviously he’s not as big, he’s 5-10, 195 pounds," Kubiak said immediately following the draft. "He can really run, comes out of a break excellent, big time ball skills, he can return. There will be every chance to help this football team.”

At least one of these undrafted running backs are going to make the team. Dennis Johnson out of Arkansas, George Winn from Cincinnati, Ray Graham from Pittsburgh and Cierre Wood out of Notre Dame are all in attendance. Wood looked to be the front runner coming out of the gate after Friday and looked to show a really good burst.

“Well, I know one thing; if I was a running back in this environment, I’d be pretty excited because we’ve got two on our team," Kubiak said after the early session. "So somebody’s going to have to step up. Obviously, we’ve got some good kids back there working. What an opportunity for a free agent to be a part of this team.”

Orhian Johnson out of Ohio State is a monster at safety. Johnson, 6-3, 215 pounds, wasn't invited to the combine, but crushed his pro day. Johnson ran a 4.5 40-yard dash, had a 38 1/2 inch vertical and jumped 10-10. he's athletic and big, He did have a huge drop on a potential interception late in session two.

We saw two Collin Kleins show up. In the morning Klein was inaccurate and at times erratic. After working out with Jake Plummer to improve his throwing motion, Klein was more than shaky during the indoor workout in the morning. When the sun came out in the afternoon, so did Klein. He threw the ball much better later in the day and showed much more comfort. Kubiak has talked with Plummer about the improvements of Klein's motion and the next few days will be a big audition for him.

Sam Montgomery didn't look outstanding. Montgomery injured his back during the morning session and was forced to sit most of the second half of the workout. He did return to the field for the evening workouts. He appeared slow and not very fluid. That could have been in part because of his back. It will be interesting to see what he can do the rest of the week to turn some heads and how quickly he recovers.

Hope Montgomery get's in turned around.

Been at camp. Can't overread any of this stuff.

Will say that the only definitive thing is that Hopkins looks like the real deal. First WR at camp not named Andre Johnson where you get that whoa feeling when you watch him.

There was a time yesterday where he was way overthrown. Didn't catch the ball but the amount of separation he got on the defender while the ball was in the air was ooooooo. Extra gear oooo.

The hands are everything advertised.

I was underwhelmed with all the baby WRs in last year's camp. Very inconsistent. Hopkins is hard to ignore.

As for all the tweets about this that and the other players, I think way too early for most of those assessments. For example, I'm not all wow Case as some. Or whoa this or that defensive player though Swearinger has shown some things. The running backs are all very intriguing. That is going to be the battle royale.

NAMASTE!!!!

Brennan Williams left the morning practice after tweaking his knee. He said he had an MRI and is ok but won't likely participate tomorrow.

Had a chance to talk to Chris Jones. He said he signing his name to a contract guaranteed him nothing. Wants to improve.

Jones also talked about how he wants to represent Bowling Green and show that they can produce NfL players.

Jones when asked about Bowling Green talked about how special the place is to him.

Sam Montgomery looked better than expected in coverage. Showed some skills in that department.

Sounds like if he can pick up the strong side OLB and play effectively that Brooks Reed can move inside.

Linebacker Evan Frierson looked much improved. Has good range from the inside in coverage.

Lo Johnson impressed with his new position at defensive end. Very athletic at 290 lbs. for the interior of the line.

Played OLB last preseason and had 2.5 sacks. Will look forward to seeing this guy play at DE in a 3-4. Could be a good rotational player for us.

#Texans have to be at 90 man roster by the end of Sunday. With current roster draft picks and UDFAs they will be at 89.

I wonder who will get that last spot? Could it be Collin Klein? Javicz Jones?

Can't say enough about Hopkins and Swearinger. First in every drill and I have not seen them take one moment of rest.

Terrence Wheatley picked off a Collin Klein pass and returned it for at least 30 yards. Until Hopkins ran him down to bump him out of bounds

Also this is minor, but rookie tryout guy Marlon Brown went home after yesterday's practices. #Texans replaced him with a lineman.

Was looking forward to Marlon Brown, I guess he's no longer a Texan.

I think that's it for the day, no real tweeting it seems.

Has the Texans ever been this close to the limit? I don't ever remember bringing in so many rookies, meaning we lost a lot of vets if bringing in 29 or so rookies still leaves us one shy of the 90 man roster.

He's in trouble if he's having to adjust to the speed of rookie camp.

How so? It's a NFL rookie camp, it's still the next level and these players were drafted to the next level, because teams thought they belonged there. It's not like players gain speed after the age of 21 or 22 ??? Rookie camp or not, the guy is still now facing NFL speed. The speed of the next talent level is one of the biggest differences to every single rookie coming in, we hear it every year, so I don't think he's in trouble.. he's just going through the steps of every other rook that came into the league.

Instead of being the big man on campus or the best athlete on the team or the shark in the aquarium of guppies on Saturdays.. They're now all on a level playing field and are just another shark in the shark tank. They no longer can just over power sub par players by athletic ability alone.. I'm pretty sure that's what he meant.

Happens every single year.

They aren't used to the pace of camp. Or how to stay hydrated enough and still perform.

Typically, this gets better. With minicamp, this is sort of like practice to practice for rookies. To get them more used to the pace, the heat, what expectations there are for picking up dropped balls, running out plays etc.

I wouldn't be overly concerned. Brandon Brooks had the biggest problems last year, but part of that was coming into camp not knowing he wasn't going to a road grader team but rather a team that wanted him lighter. I heard he was in great condition.

I'm not overly concerned. But last year we were having discussions of this same subject mostly regarding hydration questions. Evidently, this year we're seeing problems mostly related to conditioning. I might point out that in past years rookie mini-camp have all begun in mid June where the actual temperatures (not even accounting for heat index) were consistently well into the 90's. This year, mini-camp started the beginning of May where the temps have remained between mid 70's to very low 80's. When it's hot and humid maintaining hydration can definitely become a problem. But conditioning becomes that much more an important factor in overcoming the heat's effect on performance endurance. Again, not overly concerned, but this must go squarely on status of player conditioning. Fortunately it is early and good habits and level of commitment to such should be able to be re-molded.

Sam Montgomery was asked are you ready for a day off after these 3 days. He simply said "No."

Kubiak said he's about to have a "long talk" with QB Collin Klein. Impressed with how far he came in 2.5 days

Collin Klein looked the best he has on three days today. Threw the ball with confidence.

That's good to hear. With his running ability he just needs to improve his ball skills.

Kubiak on Collin Klein; "He's found a way his whole career, and he's probably gonna find a way this time, too."

Would like to see him succeed.

DeAndre Hopkins had the catch of the day on a deep ball from Keenum down the sideline. Sliding one handed catch with a DB on him.

Montgomery said he was ready for the morning. Said he was ready to get to the facility and start working at 5:30 am.

This is so random and fitting of these two: @Sonic99_SC met @antoniosmith94 just randomly at a restaurant. Got some advice.

Talked to Brennan Williams said he is looking forward to working with Duane Brown and learn from one of the best in the game.

I wondered if Klein could catch up and after a average day two.l, he really threw some NFL type passes. Still work to be done.

More good news.

Hopkins and Swearinger are ready to contribute now. Already handle themselves as professionals.

Gary Kubiak on DeAndre Hopkins: "He's special. Ball skills are extremely special. He's gonna help us early."

Alan Bonner improved over the three days. Went deep past a defender and caught a pretty ball down the sideline from Klein.

Kubiak said all the running backs in this camp impressed him. Decisions on who makes the team will depend a lot on special teams.

One player to watch is ILB Cameron Collins. Put on some good weight and is 6-2 241 lbs. Was on the 53 man roster last season.

I think Klein did enough to be offered a contract. I was down on him early but he put it together.

More Gary Kubiak on QB Collin Klein: "To watch how far the guy came in 2 and 1/2 days, probably had his best day today, It was impressive."

Supernaw said that catching balls from Keenum is just like catching balls from Yates or Schaub. He's grown that much. #texans #texanstalk

That's high praise.

Offseason workout did wonders for Phillip Supernaw. Big TE and looking forward to him at camp. IR last season bc if foot injury.

Was also impressed with Case Keenum and far he has come over the offseason. Will get a better gauge of his progress in camp.

Montgomery said that its great having HS teammate D.J. Swearinger on #texans. Tells him to run faster and jump higher.

If anyone doubted Montgomery's work ethic he's proving that that was a non-issue. Good work front office! Regardless, it doesn't look like Swearinger would let him slack off. :D

It's only been three days but I'd be shocked if DeAndre Hopkins isn't starting the first game of the season. He's ready now.

Collin Klein started off incredibly rusty and got a little better. He still has a long road ahead of him to be a QB in the NFL.

D.J. Swearinger is a fun guy. He's loud, he's competitive and he has fun playing football. He'll be a favorite of Texans fans.

To me, Cierre Wood and Dennis Johnson stood out among the UDFA running backs at camp. I think one of them will make the 53-man.

Stephen McGee has his work cut out for him to take the No. 3 job from Case Keenum. The team likes him and he looked good.

my sleeper player at camp was OLB Willie Jefferson from Stephen F. Austin. Still learning OLB but has size & potential.

Interested to see if the Texans keep all 23 UDFAs they sign. This class of UDFAs was a nice group.

Gary Kubiak continues to like what he sees in rookie WR Alan Bonner. "His best day this morning. A ton of ability."

One thing I like about Hopkins is that he asks questions. He stopped a WR drill to make sure he understood what Coach Kirksey was wanting.

Gary Kubiak concluded today's minicamp media session by wishing everyone a Happy Mother's Day.

@DrewDougherty ^ V

"Tremendous speed. He can really run."--Kubiak today on #UConn OLB Trevardo Williams

Rookie wide receivers Alec Lemon and Andy Cruse seem to catch everything. Lemon had a nice day 3.

"He’s a very old-school coach. I can say that. He’s a great guy. He’s very straight-forward." - Chris Jones on D-Line coach Kollar

From what I remember, Martin impressed early in OTAs last season. He became a pro quick. He got on the field early & contributed early. Then he hit the rookie wall.

If Martin continues to progress, that's just that much more Bonner would have to overcome.

However, I don't see KMartin as a YAC guy. At best he can be our new David Anderson. If Bonner can be as dependable as David Anderson & pick up some extra yards.... yeah I could see Bonner overtake Martin.

However, I hope our WR roles aren't as defined as they were in the past, where LeStar backs up Hopkins and Martin & Bonner play the slot. I'd like to see Andre, LeStar, & DeAndre together often.
