“It was 15 seconds of chaos” PDF Print E-mail

carrsacked.jpgI thought that this quote from David Carr in the Charlotte Observer pretty much summed his NFL career up.

"Carr, on the sideline, had no idea Delhomme was in pain until the quarterback dropped to the ground, holding his right arm.  "I strained it," Delhomme said later, his elbow wrapped in ice. "I made a couple of throws on the next drive and it just didn't feel good. I don't know what it is.  I hope everything is normal."  TV cameras caught Delhomme's grimace when he completed a 2-yard pass to Brad Hoover to the Atlanta 27 late in the third quarter.  Delhomme wasn't touched on that play but knew something wasn't right.  Said Delhomme: "It was just like, `OK, enough trying to be Mr. Macho.' I was going to hurt my team."  Carr was instructed to get ready.  "It was 15 seconds of chaos," Carr said."

Stopping Steve Smith

Andre Johnson knows that the only player in the NFL that stands a chance of stopping Steve Smith wears magic gloves. "While Carolina receiver Steve Smith finished with five catches for 32 yards, he had only two for 5 yards in the game's first 53 minutes, when the game was decided.Cornerback Ronde Barber, who had primary responsibility for Smith, was asked what the Bucs did to stop him."We didn't do anything to him," Barber said. "He just wasn't getting his opportunities. They weren't giving him opportunities. I don't know the reasons for that."We had some things in (the defensive scheme) to deal with Steve Smith today and to our benefit, we didn't have to use them."   Smith refused to speak to the media."

One Mans "Garbage Time" is Another Mans "Comeback" PDF Print E-mail

What’s the difference between “Garbage Time” and a comeback attempt? The answer to that can be seen by contrasting our first game against the Colts in 2006 with our first game against them in 2007. Last year in their first meeting with the Colts we saw the game quickly fly out of reach of the Texans. That team wasn’t coming back under any circumstances. Down 30-3 going into the fourth quarter David Carr “led” the Texans to 21 meaningless fourth quarter points. Nobody with the slightest idea what was going on thought those were anything but “Garbage Time” points and stats. With the outcome long since decided the Texans were simply getting some much needed work in against the Colts second team defense. Some Texans fans didn’t see it that way at the time.

It's Time for a @#$%! Winning Streak!! PDF Print E-mail

tuba.jpgTexans...come on. This one just has to be for the fans. You are the only team in the NFL that has never had a winning streak. Think about that and let it soak in for a minuite. Never has this team won 3 regular season games in a row. Half a decade of football and the best we could do is back to back wins. It's time...it's just time. We won the last two games of last season and then we are given our finest exhibition season in team history....and then in an effort to capture the good will the team rolls out a new team song for opening day, and with a childlike enthusiasm I open the page to hear our new team song and to my horror the song is loaded with Tuba! Tuba? Yes, Tuba! Good grief...you owe us a winning streak...and we want it NOW. I'll see you guys after the game with a full report on our first official winning streak.

thankyouverymuch,
your fans

Last 2 games of 2006:
IND 24 @ HOU 27
CLE 6 @ HOU 14

My Tweener for your Tweener PDF Print E-mail

boulware.jpgWell, the Houston Chronicle is reporting that the Jason Babin era is over and if I’m counting correctly, we have one less Texan 1.0 Charley Casserly holdover hanging around. The Texans traded one of their situational pass rushers for Michael Boulware, the converted linebacker who never really lived up to his physical potential in Seattle. Both players are considered “tweeners” and they were both taken in the same draft as projects with high upside. Boulware was the 53rd overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft and Babin was the 27th overall pick that same year even though both players were not projected to play at the position they did in College. I think it is safe to say that both players never quite lived up to their billing, but this is what often happens when you draft a developmental player early in the draft. Perhaps both players flourish given a new start in a new environment.

Charlie Casserly's last mistake. PDF Print E-mail

Friday, 31 August 2007

I’ve been trying for quite some time to write something (anything really) about the Texans that might be worth reading but I’ve been sitting on an enormous case of writers block for a couple of weeks now and about the only thing I’ve managed to acquire is renewed feeling of respect for Texans Chick and the work she put in writing a blog for the Chronicle. I can spew words all over the place on a message board but this is different. This is hard work.

My first instinct was to write about Mario Williams. It’s the never ending topic of the day and in the past few weeks I’ve found it impossible to escape the subject. I turn on the television and there’s someone talking about Mario Williams and what he hasn’t done. I pick up the Chronicle and there’s a story about the same thing. Everywhere I turn for news I see that the news is about this one man who seems doomed to fail  in his attempt to live up to his draft position and the expectations of Texans fans.

I’d just about concluded that what Texans Talk needed was another story about David Carr when Vinny called me and as sure as the sun comes up every morning I again found myself talking about Mario Williams, or as I like to call him “The new David Carr”.

That’s when the thought occurred to me that all of this talk is really about the wrong defensive end and that I really did want to write a story about David Carr and how we got to this point....
